Book excerpt: Social science suggests the existence of a gender gap in environmental behaviors in the United States. If these gaps do indeed exist, subgroup-targeted water conservation education and advertising efforts may achieve improved results. The 2009 Hamilton College Environmental Survey is used to determine the existence of a gender gap in residential, water usage-related environmental behaviors. These behaviors include self-reported frequencies of watering the lawn, washing the car, running the dishwasher/washing machine without a full load, and drinking bottled water. An ordered logit model is used to determine the existence of an environmental behavior gap. This gap is behavior dependent for the four water-related behaviors examined in this analysis, although it should be noted that the average age of this sample is higher than the national population and thus these results should be applied with care. Women are more likely to exhibit more environmentally friendly behaviors when it comes to washing the car and running the dishwasher/washing machine without a full load. Men are more likely to both water the lawn and drink bottled water less frequently. These results indicate that there may be certain gender preferences toward conserving water in some contexts more than others; encouraging water conservation may be more efficient via a targeted approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the constraints and mis-understandings associated with residential water conservation and to analyze the actual savings in dollars, water and energy that are achieved by the selection and installation of water conserving facilities. Residential water conservation programs have only been implemented during crisis or emergency situations. However, the recent awareness on the part of the American public, primarily due to the deterioration of energy resources, has focused greater attention on the interrelationships between water and energy. Research is undertaken to determine the potential constraints to a residential water conservation program and the reasons for conserving water. An analysis of various water conserving facilities is developed and applied to a residential area with an estimate of savings in dollars, water and energy. Additional impacts are reviewed as a result of this residential conservation program. (Author).

Book Synopsis Learning Connections, Children's Perceptions, and the Role of Place in Water Education by : Emily Evans
Download or read book Learning Connections, Children's Perceptions, and the Role of Place in Water Education written by Emily Evans and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of clean water is one of the most pressing natural resource issues in the world today. The quantity and quality of our nation's water is dependent on an informed and active citizenry who recognize their own crucial role in the sustainability of this precious environmental resource. Most adults are not able to identify the source of their drinking water nor the destination of their wastewater, and have limited understanding of the concept of what it means to live within a watershed. Understanding how the many parts of earth's complex water system are connected is essential to an understanding of the system as a whole. Likewise, understanding the role of both natural and human-engineered processes in the system is imperative to an understanding of resources issues such as water conservation and pollution reduction. The goal of my research was to understand how these issues emerge with respect to children's thinking and learning about water resources. In particular, I focus on the role of local place in upper elementary school students' conceptions of water as a complex environmental system and related issues of water conservation and pollution reduction. Students from five schools in California participated in this study. Through analysis of student work and interviews with students participating in a regional water education program, I examined how structured activities that contextualize learning in local place, as well as students' out of school experiences with water in local place, shape their ways of making meaning about the role and importance of water in their community and globally. In Chapter One, I introduce the role of place in water education and provide background and a description of the student populations and water education programs that are the focus of the study. In Chapter Two, I specifically examine the role of place by focusing on whether localizing global water system concepts in students' own environment has an impact on their understanding of water as a complex system. Through analysis of student work including pre and post assessments and annotated photo books, I found that after participating in a regional water education program, students increased in the total number of connections they described within and between parts of the system and increased in their awareness of the source and destination of their water. In Chapter Three, I focused on students' own concerns about water resources. Through interviews with 129 students, I found that the ways that students were concerned about water conservation and pollution reduction varied depending on the perceived scale of the issue, from local to global. In Chapter Four, I examined how students' experiences outside of school contributed to their learning about water and their thinking about water resources. Through analysis of students interviews and annotated photo books, which they created using photos they took in their homes, community and region, I found that students learn most deeply about water at home and in their communities, rather than from other sources such as media, and through these experiences developed impressions of the meaning of water as an environmental resource. In Chapter Five, I summarize and synthesize these findings across the three areas of the study, and finally discuss the potential implications of these findings for water educators in particular, and the field of environmental education in general.
