Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oversight of consumer product safety is a complex system involving many federal agencies. The United States Government Accountability Office identified eight agencies that have direct oversight responsibilities for consumer product safety: the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Department of Housing and Urban Development, Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, and the U.S. Coast Guard (within the Department of Homeland Security). All eight agencies conduct regulatory activities to promote consumer product safety, such as rulemaking, standard setting, risk assessment, enforcement, and product recalls. This book examines which federal agencies oversee consumer product safety and their roles and responsibilities; the extent and effects of any fragmentation or overlap in the oversight of consumer products; and collaboration among agencies to address any negative effects of fragmentation or overlap. This book also discusses the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.

Book Synopsis Consumer Safety Regulation by : Peter Asch
Download or read book Consumer Safety Regulation written by Peter Asch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988-05-26 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advocates of consumer safety regulation, an active and controversial area of public policy in the United States, contend that markets do not adequately protect the interests of vulnerable consumers; market traditionalists respond that public agencies increasingly make risk/safety decisions that individual citizens ought to be making for themselves. This book, written by an economist, critically assesses the rationales for, and the effects of, our major consumer safety programs. Addressed to a general audience, and incorporating relevant literature on cognitive psychology as well as economics, the author argues that although legitimate reasons for public protection of consumers exist in some markets, the particular programs we adopt often produce results that fall far short of what their advocates desire, and at least occasionally yield perverse outcomes.

Book Synopsis Misleading Marketing Communication by : Viktor Smith
Download or read book Misleading Marketing Communication written by Viktor Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the case of food labelling, this book demonstrates that the line between fair and potentially misleading communication can be approached in empirical terms, supplementing the predominantly political and legal deliberations that determine how society deals with these issues. By first critically reviewing the legal conception of misleading commercial practices manifest in EU law, the authors discuss whether and how it can be transposed into empirically measurable terms. Presenting four complementary experimental studies targeting recurrent grey-zone scenarios on the Danish food market, the book illustrates the potential of the so-called ShopTrip test paradigm which simulates and registers real-life e-shopping behaviour as it unfolds while yielding new types of data against which opposing assessments of potential misleadingness can be matched. The results are discussed in the light of possible paths of theoretical explanation and implications for future regulative practices, including companies’ self-regulation.
