Book excerpt: Self-regulation, an increasingly focus of social-emotional learning curriculums for over twenty years according to Zimmerman (2008), provides students with the ability of "setting goals, selecting strategies, and self-monitoring their effectiveness" as opposed to waiting for others to redirect their behavior (pages 166). Prekindergarten students who have documented strengths in social-emotional learning, and particularly self-regulation, have a greater chance at demonstrating academic readiness at the kindergarten level (Ashdown and Bernard, 2015). On the contrary, if students do not strengthen these social-emotional learning skills by the age of 8, a potential of long-term academic weaknesses exists (Aksoy, 2019).Prekindergarten options such as the State of Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten Program, strive to provide enriching methodologies for students at four years of age with aspirations of strong social-emotional skills and academic success in kindergarten. The most recent readiness results, from the 2018 school year, from the State of Florida indicate 58% of students demonstrated proficiency, meaning 42% of students were not ready for kindergarten during the 2019 school year (Nickerson, 2019). This result is an increase from 36% not being proficient in the 2018 school year (Postal, 2019). The purpose of this study was to better understand if an increased focus on social-emotional development at the prekindergarten level would increase a prekindergarten student's academic readiness in the form of print knowledge, phonological awareness, and oral language. In addition, the study researched the relationship between this social-emotional learning program and the number of verbal and physical aggressions for prekindergarten students. The leadership team for the school featured in this study researched several commercial programs dedicated to social-emotional learning and selected the Incredible Years Dinosaur School as the primary means for teaching social-emotional skills during the school years of 2020-2021. I conducted a descriptive study using ANOVA to compare academic reading scores of prekindergarten students at the school between the years of 2019-2020 (control group) and 2020-2021 (treatment group) using the results of the State of Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten Assessment for Assessment Period 1 administered within the first 30-days of each school year and Assessment Period 3 which occurred 30-days prior to the ending of both school years. I calculated the number of incidents of verbal and physical aggression using student behavioral incident forms to provide further data regarding the outcome. An additional analysis examined the role gender and age play in the success of students in both groups for the areas of literacy. This study finds that the students who participated in the Incredible Years Dinosaur School demonstrated growth in oral language skills with a decrease in both verbal and physical aggression occurrences. In addition, further analysis of age data between the control and treatment group indicated students from the younger cohort group (those who turned five years of age from February 1st 2021-August 31st 2021) demonstrated more success with pre-reading skills than those from the older group (those who turned five years of age from September 2, 2020-January 31, 2021. On the contrary, however, the results showed that the addition of the Incredible Years Dinosaur School at the school had no effect on the students' print knowledge or phonological awareness levels. While the school found the implementation of Incredible Years Dinosaur School strengthened students' social-emotional skills as measured by student behavioral data, the prekindergarten program at Country Wide School should research and employ supplemental reading curriculums for students to develop levels of print knowledge and phonological awareness. Oral Language, however, can be increased from such social-emotional learning programs as these programs typically provide modeling and an enhanced exposure to vocabulary. Prekindergarten programs should review the information presented in this study as well as examine the data from their own facilities to gauge whether additional time allotted to social-emotional learning possibly would be of benefit.

There are several factors that influence a child's readiness for school, including the children's natural talents and abilities, their families, their early environments, their schools, and their communities. -- The setting for this research was a primary school located within a small, urban school district in the piedmont area of North Carolina. For the purpose of this study, all kindergarten students were placed into three subgroups: kindergarten students who attended the prekindergarten program at the primary school, kindergarten students who attended an outside prekindergarten program in the surrounding community, and kindergarten students who have no record of prekindergarten attendance. -- The study's methodology included assessing all kindergarten students prior to the start of the school year using the fourth edition of the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL-4) kindergarten readiness screening assessment, and then comparing these scores to a) whether or not the student attended a prekindergarten program prior to starting school; and b) student achievement data recorded at three benchmark checkpoints (3, 5, and 7 months) throughout the kindergarten school year. Data on teacher perceptions of the effect of preschool on kindergarten readiness and student achievement were also collected and analyzed. -- When looking at kindergarten readiness, results suggest that children who attended a prekindergarten program prior to starting school scored significantly higher on the DIAL-4 readiness screening assessment than their peers who did not attend prekindergarten. In further analyzing the data, students who attended a prekindergarten program in the surrounding community scored significantly higher on the DIAL-4 readiness screening assessment than students who either attended the district prekindergarten program or did not attend prekindergarten. -- When looking at subsequent kindergarten performance, students who were originally identified as being ready for school did not, after 7 months of classroom instruction, score significantly higher in literacy, math or social development than their peers who were originally identified as being delayed. Additionally, students who attended a prekindergarten program prior to starting school did score significantly higher in math proficiency than their peers who did not attend prekindergarten, but there were no significant differences between the two groups for either literacy or social development.

Book excerpt: Participation in prekindergarten for English Language Learners may positively impact social competence and decrease school absences, which may promote increased levels of academic achievement throughout the years a student is enrolled in school. The purpose of this two-phase, explanatory sequential mixed-methods study was to assess the impact of participation in a half-day public prekindergarten program on social competence and on school attendance of kindergarten, first, and second grade Hispanic English Language Learners, and then follow up by utilizing teacher focus groups to explain the results in greater depth. In the first phase of this study, quantitative survey data were collected from teachers, parents, and students themselves regarding their perceptions of social competence skills as measured by the Social Competence Scale-Teacher Version, the Social Competence Scale-Parent Version, and the Child Development Project Student Questionnaire-Social Competence Scale, respectively. Data were then analyzed using independent-samples t tests to determine if there was a statistically significant mean difference between social competence of Hispanic English Language Learners in kindergarten, first, and second grade who attended half-day public prekindergarten and a matched sample of Hispanic English Language Learners who did not, and determine if there was a statistically significant mean difference between school attendance rates of Hispanic English Language Learners in kindergarten, first, and second grade who attended half-day public prekindergarten and a matched sample of Hispanic English Language Learners who did not. For the second phase of this study, three qualitative focus groups were held with teachers in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade, to better understand and explain the findings related to social competency. Quantitative data revealed that kindergarten Hispanic English Language Learners displayed statistically significant mean differences in their self-assessment of social competence, and second grade students displayed statistically significant mean differences in school attendance. Overall, Hispanic English Language Learners in this study who participated in half-day public prekindergarten demonstrated slightly increased, but not statistically significant differences in social competence and school attendance when compared to a matched set of Hispanic English Language Learners who did not. Qualitative data provided depth of understanding to those findings. Further research on structural variables of public prekindergarten programs and instructional quality is warranted to evaluate what specific components may have a statistically significant impact on developing social competence skills and increasing school attendance for Hispanic English Language Learners, making public prekindergarten a more effective early intervention strategy.

Specifically, the data for this research was drawn from the pre-kindergarten program of a mid-size district in Houston, Texas. In terms of methodology, quantitative techniques and analysis were used to illustrate data collected from the research sample. A two-sided t-test was run on each group to model the relationship between pre-kindergarten attendance and school readiness as determined by TPRI and social screening; and, the relationship between pre-kindergarten attendance and academic success as measured by third grade TAKS. Furthermore, a multiple linear regression test was performed on each group to asses if gender and ethnicity further impacted the results of school readiness and academic success. The findings of this research showed that attending pre-kindergarten impacted school readiness in two areas and showed no impact in one area of the TPRI. The areas that showed a positive correlation were beginning letter sound identification and listening comprehension. The area that revealed no impact was blending onset rhymes and phonemes. Another notable finding is that students who had attended pre-kindergarten showed no significant edge in socialization as identified by the University of Texas Social Screener Survey. As for longer term success, pre-kindergarten attendance did not have a significant impact on third grade TAKS scores in neither reading nor math.
