Book excerpt: The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner, is the most important insect pest of sweet peppers in New Jersey. Management of this pest has been dependent on insecticides. Numerous predators feed on the eggs and larvae of O. nubilalis and under certain conditions they can contribute high levels of biological control. Maximum control by these predators can be achieved by using selective insecticides and providing nutritional resources when prey is scarce. From 2008 to 2010, we tested the effects of bell peppers intercropped with flowering plants: dill, Anethum graveolens L.; coriander, Coriandrum sativum L.; and buckwheat, Fagopyrum escuelentum Moench on improving O. nubilalis egg predation and reducing its damage to the fruit. By placing O. nubilalis egg masses on sentinel plants, we found that the major predators in New Jersey were the coccinellid Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer, the anthocorid Orius insidiosus Say, and chrysopid larvae, Chrysoperla sp. Egg predation was negatively affected by aphid populations. Aphid populations were reduced and egg predation was enhanced in plots intercropped with flowering plants. Insecticide sprays were used to determine the compatability of a selective material, spinosad, on O. nubilalis suppression in both intercropped and non-intercropped systems. Unsprayed fruit damage was greater in non-intercropped plots with high O. nubilalis densities than intercropped plots, but not in spinosad-treated fruit. Thus spinosad may not be compatible with intercropping systems due to its toxicity to certain predators. In order to test for affects of floral provisioning on biological control, gut contents of O. insidiosus were screened for DNA from the flowers, O. nubilalis, and M. persicae. It was found that the dispersal of this predator from the flowers into the pepper crop was greatest when flowers began to senesce. However, O. nubilalis was not detected in the guts of O. insidiosus during late-June through mid-August sampling periods. Myzus persicae DNA was detcted, indicating that aphids were the primary food during and after peak aphid densities. The proportion of predators feeding on aphids was similar for intercropped and non-intercropped plots, indicating that aphids were a preferred host and that flowers did not distract O. insidiosus from feeding on aphids.

Book excerpt: Research was conducted in 1981 and 1982 to quatify losses due to stalk breakage and dropped ears caused by 2nd-generation European corn borer under present corn production systems in Indiana. Insecticide treated and untreated portions of corn fields were compared at all test locations. Artificial infestation was achieved by pinning 2 egg masses (near hatching) through the leaf midrib of the ear leaf during the period of pollen shed. Chlorpyrifos (0.96 kg a.i./ha) was applied 1 or 2 times using a solo 425R knapsack sprayer and a Hi-BoyR sprayer in 1981 and 1982 experiments, respectively. Control was determined by counting entrance holes in the stalk and cavities caused by corn borer feeding in the stalk and ear shank. Stalk breakage before harvest was categorized as to its location in the stalk as top, above-ear, below-ear and bottom. Plants with visible ear shank damage were noted. Ears dropped to the ground before harvest and unpicked ears after harvest were counted and collected. Number of entrance holes was reduced by insecticide application in all experiments. The number of stalk cavities was lower in insecticide=treated plots than in untreated plots in all experiments, although nor significantly different in the 1981 experiment. Insecticide application had an effect on number of the borer cavities in the ear shank only in the 1981 experiment. Grain weight was higher in plots with insecticide application than no-insecticide treatment in 1981. No difference in grain weight was detected in 1982. the number (...).

This book was released on 2015 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), the corn earworm, is a polyphagous caterpillar pest found throughout the United States and is a key pest of sweet corn. Chapter one is a review of literature relevant to the biology, ecology and management of H. zea in United States sweet corn production. Chapter two evaluates the predictive ability of male moth pheromone trap catch alone compared to a model that incorporates multiple factors on the biology and development of H. zea and the environment. Chapter three tests the efficacy of insecticides, registered for use against H. zea in sweet corn, in context to important timing windows during sweet corn ear development, as outlined in chapter two. The epilogue summarizes conclusions and identifies areas of future research. Chapter one is a comprehensive review of the literature relating to the biology, ecology and management of H. zea in United States sweet corn production. First, H. zea behavior, development, host interactions and ecology are reviewed, including host range, dispersal and migration, diapause and overwintering. Next, integrated pest management (IPM) practices for control of H. zea are discussed. Then, current tools including cultural, biological, chemical and transgenic controls for H. zea are reviewed. Finally, research needs likely to be of importance for management of H. zea in coming years are outlined. Female H. zea oviposit on sweet corn silks and yield loss occurs when neonates migrate into the ear under the husk to feed because a single larva can cause complete economic loss if the ear is for fresh market purposes. Chapter two examines current integrated pest management (IPM) guidelines for sweet corn that use pheromone trap-captured male H. zea moths to inform management decisions compared to models inclusive of additional factors relevant to ovipositional behavior or development of H. zea. Results of logistic regression and predictive discriminant analyses demonstrate that using multiple environmental and biological factors do, in fact, provide a higher predictive power than pheromone trap catch alone. These results show that IPM strategies to control H. zea damage in sweet corn should use multiple biological and environmental factors important for oviposition and infestation, and that pheromone trap catch alone is not the best predictor of damage at harvest. Chapter three draws on the conclusions of chapter 2, asking whether sweet corn can be protected more effectively if insecticides are applied to target the most attractive silking periods for female H. zea oviposition. The relationship between insecticide application timing from tassel through silk stages and marketable yield at harvest were evaluated in the field. Results were compared to yields resulting from current IPM recommendations for the northeast United States. The effectiveness of three registered insecticides (methomyl, chlorantraniliprole and lambda-cyhalothrin), each representing a different class of insecticide, were evaluated. Significant yield differences among insecticides and timing treatments were detected and the combined effects of active ingredient with timing determined the extent of H. zea damage. The efficacy of chlorantraniliprole as an effective means of H. zea control in sweet corn was unclear. In year 1, there was no significant effect of insecticide type or application timing, but there was a significant interaction effect between factors. In year 2, there was a significant effect of insecticide type. Chlorantraniliprole treatments resulted in significantly higher percentages of sweet corn ears compared to lambda-cyhalothrin. There was also a main effect of application timing. Four insecticide applications made from 50% tassel to 25% dry silk resulted in significantly higher percentages of clean ears at harvest compared with a single insecticide application made at 50% tassel. Compared to other timing treatments, however, there were no significant differences. 4 The epilogue provides a summary of conclusions reached from chapters one through three. This section also discusses areas of future research that include plant-insect dynamics, chemical ecology and possibilities for advancement of IPM strategies for H. zea management in the 21st century. 5.

Larval dispersal takes the form of ballooning; larvae use silk to hang off of plant surfaces and some get picked up by the wind. The longer the silk length, the greater the drag and the more likely the larva is to get picked up by the wind and the farther the larva will travel. The European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis, has been observed ballooning and is currently the target of a large control effort using transgenic Bt corn. I examined the differences between ECB larval dispersal on Pioneer 34K78 Mon 810 event Bt corn and Pioneer 34K77 non-Bt isoline corn. I tested plant abandonment, larval dispersal in artificial plots and ECB silking behavior. My results suggest that ECB larvae that hatch on a Bt corn plant abandon that plant with a higher frequency than ECB larvae that hatch on a non Bt corn plant and that ECB larvae are capable of reaching neighboring corn plants by ballooning. This dispersal behavior may play a significant role in resistance management, particularly in the spacing of non-Bt refuges. These experiments help us to better understand ECB neonate behavior and may apply to other insects under Bt selection pressure.
