Book Synopsis Wage Issues in American Samoa by : Martin H. Navarro
Download or read book Wage Issues in American Samoa written by Martin H. Navarro and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2011 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In American Samoa, the first minimum wage increase raised the wages of about three-quarters of workers at private sector employers. By 2016, the minimum wage increases would affect the wages of close to 95 percent of those employers' private sector workers. Earnings data show that employment grew from 2006 to 2008, but employment dropped from 2008 to 2009, since the September 2009 closing of one tuna cannery. Cannery officials said that minimum wage increases were a significant contributing factor in the closure of one cannery. Public and private sector officials expressed concern about the significant impact on employment if future minimum wage increases lead the remaining cannery to close or make attracting new industries more difficult. This book examines the wages, employment, employer actions, earnings, and worker views since minimum wage increases began in American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Download or read book American Samoa and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands: Employment, Earnings, and Status of Key Industries Since Minimum Wage Increases Began written by David Gootnick and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the U.S. enacted a law incrementally raising the minimum wages in Amer. Samoa and the Commonwealth of the N. Mariana Islands (CNMI) until they equal the U.S. minimum wage. Amer. Samoa¿s minimum wage increased by 50¢ three times, and the CNMI¿s four times before legislation delayed the increases, providing for no increase in Amer. Samoa in 2010 or 2011 and none in the CNMI in 2011. Recent economic declines in both areas reflect the closure of one of two canneries in Amer. Samoa and the departure of the garment industry in the CNMI. This report describes, since the increases began: (1) employment and earnings; and (2) the status of key industries. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.

Book Synopsis The Right to a Living Wage by : Matt Uhler
Download or read book The Right to a Living Wage written by Matt Uhler and published by Greenhaven Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the disappearance of well-paying jobs and the increasing cost of living, it’s becoming more and more difficult to stay afloat in the United States. Workers who earn the minimum wage often can’t afford the most basic needs. In response, more than 100 U.S. cities have issued living wage ordinances, requiring payments that allow workers to afford food, clothing, shelter, utilities, and healthcare. It may seem obvious that everyone wins with a living wage. But does paying out a living wage help or harm the economy? Should corporations be forced to pay them? What is society’s responsibility to its workers?

Book excerpt: Chronicling the highly partisan and polarized environment during the historic first term of President Barack Obama, Congress and the Nation 2009-2012 Volume XIII is the most authoritative reference on congressional law-making and trends during the 111th and 112th Congresses. The newest edition in this award-winning series documents the most fiercely debated issues during this period, including: Stimulus spending in the wake of financial crisis The controversial reform of the U.S. healthcare system Showdowns over raising the national debt ceiling Extensions of tax cuts and unemployment compensation Confirmation of two new female members of the U.S. Supreme Court Overhaul of financial industry regulations Repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law banning openly gay armed forces personnel from military service This acclaimed resource also covers the shift in partisan control of the U.S. House after the 2010 midterm election and the subsequent gridlock for lawmaking in the 112th Congress. Organized by policy area, each chapter summarizes the legislative activity, including a chronology and legislative history of the bills passed and the major provisions of the final laws. No other source guides readers seamlessly through the policy output of the national legislature with the breadth, depth, and authority of Congress and the Nation. This must-have reference for all academic libraries meets the needs of the full spectrum of users, from lower-level undergraduates through researchers and faculty.
