Book excerpt: Mangrove forests along the vast expanses of Indonesia's 95,180 kilometers of shoreline have long attracted man's curiosity for some time. These unique tidal forests have developed luxuriantly along the low-gradient, passive-margins of the wide continental shelf of Indonesia. No books concerning Indonesia's mangroves have been published previously by the Research Centre for Oceanography of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), despite the fact that these forests are areas of amazing beauty, exceptionally high biodiversity, and are the home and basis for the sociocultural and economic livelihoods of millions of Indonesians. This book highlights a particular problem regarding our 13 provinces that border with the South China Sea — we have insufficient information about the vast coastal tracts of Indonesia's South China Sea region.

Book excerpt: The novelty is related to a silvofishery study in a 10-year-old standing mangrove forest in an area of formerly abrasive shrimp ponds. It has a different depth of sedimentation from mangrove forest areas in general. The density of the mangrove forest, an abundance of gastropods and mud crabs (Scylla spp.) in the core zone of standing mangrove forest, and the carrying capacity of the core zone of old mangrove forest as a silver-fishery area for mangrove crabs (Scylla spp.). Describe the relationship between mangrove conditions, the abundance of gastropods, and mud crabs (Scylla spp.) in Pandansari Hamlet, Kaliwlingi Village, Brebes District, Brebes Regency. Mangrove tourism area Station II sandy substrate, located in a mangrove forest adjacent to the sea 15 m away Station III, muddy sand substrate. The existence of communities around mangrove forests is very influential on the sustainability of mangrove forest ecosystems; it requires the involvement of local communities in efforts to manage mangroves sustainably. Silvofishery is the utilization of mangrove forests combined with fishery commodities to protect mangrove plants by providing results from the fisheries sector. This system can increase people's income while paying attention to the sustainability of mangrove forests. Based on these conditions, the mangrove forest area can be declared adequate as a mangrove crab silvofishery area and become part of nature conservation.

Book excerpt: The dugong (Dugong dugon) is the only herbivorous mammal that is strictly marine. It has a range spanning some 37 countries, including tropical and subtropical coastal and island waters. This plan presents a global overview of the status of the dugong and its management throughout its range. It contains information on dugong distribution and abundance, threatening processes, legislation, and existing and suggested research and management initiatives for the countries and territories in the dugong’s known range. It is hoped that the comparative information provided will enable individual countries to develop their own, more detailed, conservation plans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book informs readers on the ecology, ecosystem services, and management of Sundaland wetland ecosystems, discussing the concepts and tools necessary to conserve these imperiled habitats. Sundaland is a biogeographically defined area of South East Asia characterised by an exceptional concentration of endemic species. The unprecedented loss of wetland habitats within Sundaland warrants urgency in implementing conservation actions. The authors are both researchers who have witnessed the ongoing losses of wetland habitats in Sundaland. The first chapter introduces fundamental concepts of ecosystems, ecological processes and ecosystem services of coastal and inland wetlands. The second chapter provides an overview of the global and regional conservation status of these ecosystems. The third chapter advances the importance of wetlands management at the landscape level (drainage basins), and proposes to adopt the concept of Ecotonal Networks (ENTs) as a sustainable management method, within the theoretical framework of Resilience Theory. The fourth chapter showcases potential flagship species that can aid in raising awareness on these endangered but poorly-known ecosystems. The fifth chapter discusses sustainable ecotourism as a viable and profitable industry to manage non-urban wetland areas of Sundaland, while providing specific suggestions for future developments. The book is written for ecosystem managers, conservation scientists, ecologists, and nature enthusiasts. It consists of a coherently arranged set of scientifically accurate tools that consider societal, cultural, and economic factors to succeed in the conservation of the Sundaland wetlands, as well as other wetland habitats in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent second edition of Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management, has been fully updated and expanded, providing a book which is an essential purchase for students and scientists studying, working or researching in fisheries and aquatic sciences. In the same way that excessive hunting on land has threatened terrestrial species, excessive fishing in the sea has reduced stocks of marine species to dangerously low levels. In addition, the ecosystems that support coastal marine species are threatened by habitat destruction, development and pollution. Open access policies and subsidised fishing are placing seafood in danger of becoming a scarce and very expensive commodity for which there is an insatiable demand. Positive trends include actions being taken to decrease the incidental catches of non-target species, consumer preferences for seafood from sustainable fisheries, and the establishment of no-take areas that provide refuges for marine species. But there is an urgent need to do more. Because there is an increasing recognition of the need to manage ecosystems as well as fish stocks, this second edition of this bestselling text book includes an additional chapter on marine ecology. Chapters on parameter estimation and stock assessment now include step-by-step instructions on building computer spreadsheet models, including simulations with random variations that realistically emulate the vagaries of nature. Sections on ecosystem management, co-management, community-based management and marine protected areas have been expanded to match the increased interest in these areas. Containing many worked examples, computer programs and numerous high quality illustrations, Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management, second edition, is a comprehensive and essential text for students worldwide studying fisheries, fish biology, aquatic and biological sciences. As well as serving as a core text for students, the book is a superb reference for fisheries and aquatic researchers, scientists and managers across the globe, in both temperate and tropical regions. Libraries in all universities where fish biology, fisheries, aquatic sciences and biological sciences are studied and taught will need copies of this most useful new edition on their shelves.
