The impact of this resettlement can be both favourable and unfavourable. A resettlement of the eastern Ontario/western Quebec study area from 1972 to 1979 was mainly generated by exurbanites from Montreal and Ottawa. This resettlement has generally strengthened rural socio-economic infrastructures and maintained farmland in agricultural use. However, the demand for primarily subdivided properties is decreasing the availability and increasing the value of quality farmland. While farmers may turn to land rental, short-term agreements contribute to exploitation of the soil resource. The anticipation of higher land values could also contribute further to economic uncertainty and eventually to a lowering of agricultural productivity"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "The key issue examined is the impact of CMHC infrastructure assistance on the nature, form, and location of development vis-a-vis the rural land resource. Assessment of impact includes both financial leverage (CMHC funding causing infrastructure development to occur) and on-the-ground leverage (the CMHC funded infrastructure influencing the form and location of urban development). This evaluation is from the point of view of impacts on the use and management of the land resource under the guidelines of the Federal Policy on Land Use (Canada/Government of Canada, 1981)"--Executive Summary, p. v.

Book excerpt: In the second half of the twentieth century, significant changes were occurring within the agricultural industry, including an increase in efficiency and government intervention, as well as expanded and more complicated patterns of trade. This comprehensive volume, first published in 1986, reflects how these developments challenged the field of agricultural geography. Considering agricultural innovations, farming systems, government policy and land ownership, this title provides an essential background to students with an interest in agricultural methods, distribution and reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many scholars, the study of community and community development is at a crossroads. Previously dynamic theories appear not to have kept pace with the major social changes of our day. Given our constantly shifting social reality we need new ideas and research that pushes the boundaries of our extant community theories. Theory, Practice, and Community Development stretches the traditional boundaries and applications of well-established community development theory, and establishes new theoretical approaches rooted in new disciplines and new perspectives on community development. Expanded from a special issue of the journal Community Development, Theory, Practice, and Community Development collects previously published and widely cited essays, as well as new theoretical and empirical research in community development. Compiled by the editors of Community Development, the essays feature topics as varied as placemaking, democratic theory and rural organizing. Theory, Practice, and Community Development is vital for scholars and practitioners coming to grips with the rapidly changing definition of community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Canada, as elsewhere, there has been an outward expansion of urban centres in order to accommodate the land demands for urban activities. A variety of resource conflicts have arisen as a result, one of the most actively discussed in recent times being the development for urban uses of land with high capability for renewable uses. While there have been numerous studies undertaken in an effort to estimate the extent and rate of conversions of rural land, especially agricultural land, to urban land uses, there has been much less attention devoted to estimating the extent and possible implications of future land conversions. In this report an approach to estimating future rural to urban land conversions is described and a method to assess the implications of land conversions in terms of the land resource for rural land use activities is developed. A pilot study, implemented to assess the implications of future land conversions for agriculture in Ontario, provides an illustration of the approaches described"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "Agriculture and urbanisation are often considered to be mutually antagonistic land-uses. But in an increasingly urban-orientated world, agriculture depends on city markets and often has to operate within the complex mosaic of the urban fringe." "This book provides a broad analysis of the nature, structure and relationships of farming in the countryside surrounding cities. From the perspective of resource management and land use planning, the authors explore the biophysical and human dimensions of the organisation of periurban agriculture and identify four main elements around which they present their analysis, the resource base, the market, the farmer, and the role of government." "Bryant and Johnston use case study material mainly from the developed world to demonstrate how conflicts and problems can be resolved to the benefit of farmer and city-dweller. By applying systems theory, they provide a synthesis for understanding how modern agriculture functions under urban influence and how these trends are likely to develop in the future, in the context of conservation, economic factors and technological change." "An essential and stimulating study of a key issue, this book will appeal to students and researchers in urban studies, rural geography, agricultural economics, land-use studies and planning."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the issue of farmland abandonment in theGaspe region of Quebec, from 1961 to 1981. Physiographic, socio-economic and political forces have each played an important rolein agricultural land use changes. Since 1976, however, thesituation has been showing signs of slow recovery. A case studyidentifies specifically the areas experiencing changes inagricultural land use and the areas where reforestation is takingplace. Results of the study showed that the majority ofabandoned farmland was unused in 1981. Finally, developmentalternatives are outlined.
