Book excerpt: Over the past decade, travelers have increasingly utilized technology to aid their use of transportation systems, from real-time navigation apps like Google Maps, to ride-sourcing apps like Uber and Lyft, to bike and scooter-share apps like Lime and Spin. These applications of technology to mobility systems have fundamentally changed the way in which people travel by offering them the ability to navigate the physical world by first navigating a virtual representation of it. The layers of virtual and physical transportation infrastructure complicates transportation planning efforts and underscores the need for methodologies to understand and leverage the relationship between the virtual and physical transportation infrastructures.This dissertation offers concrete methodologies to understand the behavior and impact of technologically-enabled mobility services on transportation infrastructure along three directions:1) to illuminate the coordinating signals in virtual mobility services, 2) to anticipate benefits and harms of coordinating signals in general physical transportation networks, and3) to recover coordinating signals from observed behavior on the physical network. These methodologies together expand the toolbox of the transportation planner to not only accommodate but leverage technological change in realizing the transportation system of the future.In the first part of this thesis, we demonstrate that spatial-temporal imbalances in supply and demand on ride-sourcing platforms can be predicted from real-time urban data. This work highlights surge pricing as an imperfect market mechanism and also demonstrates that ride-sourcing supply and demand behavior in the aggregate can be recovered from data. In the second part of the thesis, we study how coordination within a virtual transportation infrastructure impacts travelers on the physical road network. In the best case, this coordination induces the system optimal network utilization, but in other cases may reduce network efficiency. Finally, we study how we might infer the coordinating signal within a virtual transportation network from observed behavior of its users on the physical network, even as the environment is changing. To this end we apply a novel statistical test to driver behavior during the COVID-19 lockdown in Pittsburgh. This research may also be applied to assess the validity of network equilibrium models based on a particular notion of travel cost to describe the long-run behavior of a network from data collected on that network over time. Taken together this thesis outlines a methodology for transportation planners to recover coordinating signals from data and leverage them in long-term transportation plans to improve transportation systems.

Book excerpt: Today, networks are necessary to our society; we need them to provide access to fundamental needs like energy, transportation, natural resources or information. The main problem for those networks is that they might have to face congestion, resulting in a decrease of the users' quality or even a failure of the network. In this thesis, several experimental studies will be presented. In the first chapter, the literature related to the topic is presented. In chapter two, we built a theoretical model of market entry game where congestion cost increases at a higher rate when the flow of entrants grows (snowball effect). we find no significant difference between the aggregated entry rates in our snowball game compared to usual MEG. For our third chapter, we have conducted an experiment aiming to analyze how agents coordinate their usage of a limited resource. Several ways to make users face congestion were tested. It appeared that on all treatments, players were unable to successfully coordinate on Nash equilibrium. We also observed that providing more precise information did not help to increase cooperation. Offering two pricing systems including a safe one increased average consumption while excluding biggest consumers in case of congestion significantly reduce average group consumption and also limited extreme value of consumption (low or high). In the fourth chapter, we studied how a regulator can influence social norm by implementing different policies. This experiment was conducted in Japan and France. We find that creating socially optimum social norm required to give enough incentive to cooperate to agents, but also required a strong impact on agents' beliefs.

Book excerpt: The use and management of multimodal transport systems, including car-pooling and goods transportation, have become extremely complex, due to their large size (sometimes several thousand variables), the nature of their dynamic relationships as well as the many constraints to which they are subjected. The managers of these systems must ensure that the system works as efficiently as possible by managing the various causes of malfunction of the transport system (vehicle breakdowns, road obstructions, accidents, etc.). The detection and resolution of conflicts, which are particularly complex and must be dealt with in real time, are currently processed manually by operators. However, the experience and abilities of these operators are no longer sufficient when faced with the complexity of the problems to be solved. It is thus necessary to provide them with an interactive tool to help with the management of disturbances, enabling them to identify the different disturbances, to characterize and prioritize these disturbances, to process them by taking into account their specifics and to evaluate the impact of the decisions in real time. Each chapter of this book can be broken down into an approach for solving a transport problem in 3 stages, i.e. modeling the problem, creating optimization algorithms and validating the solutions. The management of a transport system calls for knowledge of a variety of theories (problem modeling tools, multi-objective problem classification, optimization algorithms, etc.). The different constraints increase its complexity drastically and thus require a model that represents as far as possible all the components of a problem in order to better identify it and propose corresponding solutions. These solutions are then evaluated according to the criteria of the transport providers as well as those of the city transport authorities. This book consists of a state of the art on innovative transport systems as well as the possibility of coordinating with the current public transport system and the authors clearly illustrate this coordination within the framework of an intelligent transport system. Conventional solutions, such as expanding or adding new roadways, are often not possible. This thesis investigates decentralized coordination methods for vehicles in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to enable them to work together to accomplish some common coordination goals. Real-time communication considerations are discussed, including media access control protocols and the possible technologies for supporting inter-vehicle communication. A distributed mode change algorithm is presented which allows vehicles to change to a common mode for the sake of coordinating their actions in response to some event in the environment. This distributed mode change algorithm is evaluated against a case study. Possible directions for future research are presented.
