Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community forestry focuses on the link between forest resources and livelihoods and contributes to forest conservation and reforestation. It is widespread in Nepal, with a very high proportion of the rural population involved, and is widely recognized as one of the most successful examples of community forestry in Asia. Through a combination of literature reviews and original research, this volume explores key experiences and outcomes of community forestry in Nepal over the last four decades as a model for improving forest management and supporting local livelihoods. The book takes a critical approach, recognizing successes, especially in forest conservation and restoration, along with mixed outcomes in terms of poverty reduction and benefits to forest users. It recognizes the way that community forestry has continued to evolve to meet new challenges, including the global challenges of climate change, environmental degradation and conservation, as well as national demographic and social changes due to large-scale labour migration and the growing remittance economy. In addition to examining the changes and responses, the book explores ways that community forestry in Nepal might move forward. Lessons from Nepal have relevance to community forestry and community-based approaches to natural resource management around the world that are also experiencing global pressures and opportunities.

Book excerpt: The community forestry programme in Nepal has been a major thrust area of forest management over the last two decades. Community forestry programme is operating with twin objectives of forest management and human resource development at grassroots levels by establishing community forestry users groups. The present study was carried out in three community forestry users groups of Nawalparasi district, Nepal. The study examined the functioning and governance of community forestry users groups, share of income derived from community forestry among different income groups of users, determinants of forest income, impact of community forestry on income distribution among different user groups, impact of community forestry on employment and wage rates in the labour market.Different descriptive analysis and statistical test suggests there is need to establish agroforestry system, provide more trainings, run different programmes for income generating activities, provide more employment by involving forest dependent people in different forest activities and establishing forest based industries by users group to uplift the socio-economic condition of forest dependent low income population

Download or read book Forty years of community-based forestry written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2016 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s and 1980s, community-based forestry has grown in popularity, based on the concept that local communities, when granted sufficient property rights over local forest commons, can organize autonomously and develop local institutions to regulate the use of natural resources and manage them sustainably. Over time, various forms of community-based forestry have evolved in different countries, but all have at their heart the notion of some level of participation by smallholders and community groups in planning and implementation. This publication is FAO’s first comprehensive look at the impact of community-based forestry since previous reviews in 1991 and 2001. It considers both collaborative regimes (forestry practised on land with formal communal tenure requiring collective action) and smallholder forestry (on land that is generally privately owned). The publication examines the extent of community-based forestry globally and regionally and assesses its effectiveness in delivering on key biophysical and socioeconomic outcomes, i.e. moving towards sustainable forest management and improving local livelihoods. The report is targeted at policy-makers, practitioners, researchers, communities and civil society.

This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research publication highlights the socioeconomic and developmental aspects of the community forest user groups in Terai Arc Landscape of Nepal. Different indicators such as socio-economic status of the people involved in forest user groups, the impact of community forestry on the local environment and local developmental activities are presented in this book. The opportunity to participate in raising awareness and empowerment process is not equally distributed among different socio-economic groups. However, the overall socio-economic condition of the respondents in the study area has been improved in their living standard after the formation of community forest. The establishment of community forest and transformation of it's ownership to the locale not only created employment opportunity but also help to improve the forest management system. The Community Forest Program in Nepal has facilitated to reduce the rate of deforestation which ultimately support to increase the soil fertility and agricultural productivity

Book Synopsis People in motion, forests in transition: Trends in migration, urbanization, and remittances and their effects on tropical forests by : Susanna Hecht
Download or read book People in motion, forests in transition: Trends in migration, urbanization, and remittances and their effects on tropical forests written by Susanna Hecht and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2015-11-08 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration is not new. In recent decades however, human mobility has increased in numbers and scope and has helped fuel a global shift in the human population from predominantly rural to urban. Migration overall is a livelihood, investment and resilience strategy. It is affected by changes across multiple sectors and at varying scales and is affected by macro policies, transnational networks, regional conditions, local demands, political and social relations, household options and individual desires. Such enhanced mobility, changes in populations and communities in both sending and receiving areas, and the remittances that mobility generates, are key elements of current transitions that have both direct and indirect consequences for forests. Because migration processes engage with rural populations and spaces in the tropics, they inevitably affect forest resources through changes in use and management. Yet links between forests and migration have been overlooked too often in the literature on migration as well as in discussions about forest-based livelihoods. With a focus on landscapes that include tropical forests, this paper explores trends and diversities in the ways in which migration, urbanization and personal remittances affect rural livelihoods and forests.
Book Synopsis Commercialisation of Non-timber Forest Products: Review and Analysis of Research by : Roderick P. Neumann
Download or read book Commercialisation of Non-timber Forest Products: Review and Analysis of Research written by Roderick P. Neumann and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is one in a series of activities undertaken by CIFOR to reach a better understanding of the impact of commercialisation on forest resources and what factors influence the market demand for forest products. For example, two international workshops were organized by CIFOR in 1995 and another the following year to analyse key research issues in the field of NTFP development. These workshops recognised that the process of NTFP commercialisation interacts with people’s welfare, forest management, tenure and control of resources, and forest structure and function (through ecological processes). Earlier review and analysis had generated a number of hypotheses, theories and conclusions related to the effects of commercialisation. Forest and resource tenure are likely to both affect the way a resource is managed and utilised, and be affected by changes in value due to commercialisation. Many authors have suggested that NTFP harvesting will be less damaging to biodiversity and other environmental values than management for timber. Others suggest that market pressures are likely to lead to the decline and eventual disappearance of valuable products and to severe impacts on the ecosystem. While there is a growing understanding (and acceptance) of the economic importance of forest products, especially for the poor, the potential impact of NTFP commercialisation needs to be better understood. A recommendation from the workshops was to undertake a thorough overview of the available literature to synthesise the key lessons about these areas of interaction. Such a review would critically examine the available information and analyses and identify key research areas needing further attention.

Book Synopsis Analyzing the investment effects of forest rights devolution in Nepal’s community-managed forest enterprises by : Adhikary, A.
Download or read book Analyzing the investment effects of forest rights devolution in Nepal’s community-managed forest enterprises written by Adhikary, A. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest rights devolution in Nepal from the late 1980s created different types of community-based forest management institutions, in particular community forestry user groups. Effective forest regeneration led to a new focus on entrepreneurial opportunities for improving livelihoods and social equity, resulting in considerable if unstable enterprise growth. Employing the concept of enabling and asset investments, the study examines how user groups have established and managed forest-based enterprises, taking account of regulatory and non-regulatory factors. The study is based on primary data from interviews with 12 community-managed forest enterprises as well as secondary data from the published, government and grey literature. In light of the high export demand for non-timber forest products from India and elsewhere, there has been gradual policy support for enterprise development from the government. Enabling investments by the government, donors and non-governmental organizations have built momentum and contributed to success. Forest-based enterprises have the potential to change the face of Nepal’s rural economy. However, complex and poorly harmonized regulatory requirements have kept many community-managed forest enterprises in a state of informality and unable to attract asset investment. An emerging second generation of community-managed forest enterprises can benefit from reductions in regulatory burdens and attract asset investments capable of overcoming current obstacles to growth.

Book Synopsis Systematic Data Collection by : Susan C. Weller
Download or read book Systematic Data Collection written by Susan C. Weller and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data collection in the field, whether by interviewing or other methods, can be carried out in a structured, systematic and scientific way. This volume compels field researchers to take very seriously not only what they hear, but what they ask. Ethnographers have often discovered too late that the value of their interview information is discounted as a consequence of poor sampling (of both questions and informants) and poor elicitation techniques. The authors focus on the importance of establishing the right questions to ask through the use of free listing techniques; then they describe in practical terms the administration of an impressive array of alternative kinds of informant task. They conclude with a discussion of reliability and validity of various methods which can be used to generate more systematic, culturally meaningful data.
