Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study was to make an assessment of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in regards to its effects on members' trade. The scope of analysis is mainly limited to ASEAN-5 countries, but covers most of the history of the Association, from 1975 to the present. A review of trade statistics was performed with consideration for the dynamics of the product mix and direction of trade for this time period. In addition, innovative use of the gravity model of international trade was applied to regressions with careful consideration to potential trade determinates and related issues that are unique to the region. Comparisons of outputs are made across time periods and for both intra-regional and extra-regional trade samples and a comprehensive series of tests of AFTA's significance for trade determination are applied. Evidence shows that AFTA is a positive and significant factor for ASEAN trade. Other findings of particular interest relate to the relationship between inward FDI and trade, trade growth in new manufacturing industries, and the clear differences in trade determination at different time periods and directions for ASEAN. Results also suggest that ASEAN's most recent declarations for the future, in the form of the ASEAN Investment Area (AIA) and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), are correctly designed and should be conducive to their expresses goals. These continuing ASEAN integration efforts appropriately utilize a market-based, trade and investment restriction reduction approach conducive to stimulating competition and scale productivity gains.

Book excerpt: The Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) was created as early as 1967 but ASEAN economic cooperation moved in a lackluster pace with few concrete accomplishments. To move the organization from its benign state of economic cooperation, the member states signed in 1992 the agreement on ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) which is to be fully realized by the year 2003. Although agricultural products were initially excluded from the agreement to protect a sensitive sector like agriculture from open regional competition, the member states decided to include them in AFTA in 1995. Through application of a spatial price equilibrium model, the effects of AFTA on demand, supply, prices and trade of selected agricultural products in ASEAN countries and their major trading partners were analyzed. The spatial characteristic of the model analysis facilitated simulation of trade flows and thus provided insights on the possible changes in intra- and extra-ASEAN trade.

Book excerpt: The formation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), agreed upon at the Fourth ASEAN Summit in January 1992, reflects both developments within ASEAN and the changing international economic and political environment. Rapid industrialization in all the ASEAN countries has given rise to greater intra-ASEAN trade. Such trade has also become more complementary than competitive. In the international sphere, the emergence of regional trading blocs such as the Single European Market (SEM) and the recently concluded North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have also had a major impact on ASEAN's perceptions of a global trading system. Fears of trade and investment diversion, coupled with increasing competition for foreign direct investments, have forced ASEAN to forge closer economic ties amongst its members. This timely volume focuses on the issues concerning the practical aspects of implementation of AFTA, and the ways and means of bringing AFTA to fruition within the 15 year frame. In addition, broader global and regional issues are analysed to provide a more comprehensive discussion of the prospects and problems of AFTA.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this work is to determine the possible effects of ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) on selected industries in Malaysia i.e. the automotive, palm oil and banking Industries. The descriptive statistic is used to analyze the insights of the industry's background. The reliability test is used to measure the reliability of scale in part B, C, and D of the questionnaire. Next, the Chi-Square of Independence is used to analyze the data obtained from the sample i.e to examine the perceived impact of AFTA. The findings show that the impact of AFTA strongly depends on the individual industries. It is statistically evident that AFTA could bring direct negative impact on the automotive industry and positive impact on the palm oil and banking Industries in Malaysia. In general, AFTA brings positive impact on all these selected industries.

In the decades that followed, ASEAN's scope evolved to include an ambitious and progressive economic agenda. In December 2015, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) was formally launched. Although AEC has enjoyed some notable successes, the vision of economic integration is yet to be fully realized. This publication reviews the evolution of ASEAN economic integration and assesses the major achievements. It also examines the challenges that emerged during the past decade and provides recommendations on how to overcome them.

Book excerpt: This book investigates long-term development issues for members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). It finds that with the proper policy mix—including domestic structural reforms and bold initiatives for regional integration—ASEAN has the potential to reach by 2030 the average quality of life enjoyed today in advanced economies and to fulfill its aspirations to become a resilient, inclusive, competitive, and harmonious (RICH) region. Key challenges moving forward are to enhance macroeconomic and financial stability, support equitable growth, promote competitiveness and innovation, and protect the environment. Overcoming these challenges to build a truly borderless economic region implies eliminating remaining barriers to the flow of goods, services, and production factors; strengthening competitiveness and the institutional framework; and updating some governing principles. But ASEAN should not merely copy the European Union. It must maintain its flexibility and pragmatism without creating a bloated regional bureaucracy. The study’s main message is that through closer integration, ASEAN can form a partnership for achieving shared prosperity in the region and around the globe.

Book excerpt: 'This book provides a coherent and current account of how India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and the People's Republic of China coped with the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s and the recent global economic recession, and how they may address future challenges in maintaining growth in difficult times. It features a valuable overview of issues from a regional perspective, five chapters on general elements and obstacles in development, and individual chapters on the experience of each of the six countries. Every chapter is replete with relevant institutional and statistical data. The volume fills a void in the literature and is highly recommended for graduate students and for economists concerned with contemporary Asia.' – Peter Drake, The University of New England and Australian Catholic University, Australia 'To understand what makes Asia tick in the face of continuing global uncertainty and instability one has to go beyond numbers into the region's psyche and idiosyncrasies. This volume provides an interestingly intrusive and refreshingly insightful analysis of a highly complex phenomenon that defies generalizations as shown by the diversity of individual country experiences.' – Mohamed Ariff, International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), Malaysia The center of global economic activity is shifting rapidly towards Asia, driven by a combination of the economic dynamism of the People's Republic of China, India, and other middle-income Asian countries, and sluggish growth in the OECD economies. The rapid growth and rising global prominence have raised a range of major challenges for Asia and for the rest of the world. This comprehensive, forward-looking book examines these issues through in-depth studies of major Asian economies and an analysis of the key development policy options. The contributors, leading international authorities in their field, explore cross-cutting thematic issues with special reference to developing Asia. They address a broad range of subjects including: investment and productivity, savings and the savings–investment relationship, financial development, the provision of infrastructure, and governance and institutions. Detailed country studies focusing on the People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand not only provide an analytical narrative for each case study, but also draw attention to the similarities and diversity within the region. This challenging and thought-provoking book will prove an important point of reference for scholars, researchers, and students in the fields of economics, development economics, and Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the economic, political, social and environmental challenges facing rural communities in the Asia-Pacific region, as global issues intersect with local contexts. Such challenges, from climatic change and volcanic eruption to population growth and violent civil unrest, have stimulated local resilience amongst communities and led to evolving regional institutions and environment management practices, changing social relationships and producing new forms of stratification. Bringing together case studies from across mainland Southeast Asia and the Island Pacific, an expert team of international contributors reveal how communities at the periphery take charge of their lives, champion the virtues of their own local systems of production and consumption, and engage in the complexities of new structures of development that demand a response to the vacillations of global politics, economy and society. Inherent in this is the recognition that 'development' as we have come to know it is far from over. Each chapter emphasizes the growing recognition that ecological and environmental issues are key to any understanding and analysis of structures of sustainable development. Providing diverse multidisciplinary theoretical and empirical perspectives, Environment, Development and Change in Rural Asia-Pacific makes an important contribution to the revitalization of development studies and as such will be essential reading for scholars in the field, as well as those with an interest in Asia-Pacific studies, economic geography and political economy.
