Book excerpt: As world population increases and arable land for agricultural production either decreases or is shifted into more adverse environment, a need has arisen for the effective breeding of new cultivars of existing crop species adapted to these new conditions. Thus, the objectives of this study, were to assess the impact of selection for increased grain yield in a single low-productivity environment (antagonistic selection) versus a high productivity environment (synergistic selection); the impact of selection using per se performance (S1 families) for two cycles in a grain sorghum random-mating population, KP9B, for their effectiveness to develop population of lines with improved grain yield and reduced environmental sensitivity; to evaluate the effectiveness ofantagonistic versus synergistic selection in changing yield and its associated trait components after two cycles of S1 family recurrent selection, and to consider possible morpho physiological aspects of different traits on adaptation of KP9B population. In 1993 and 1994, the 100 S1, 50 full-sib, and 50 half-sib families from each population (C0, C2Gc, and C2MD) were evaluated in two replications of a blocks-in-replication design with 4 blocks of 26 entries for the S1 families (four commercial hybrids used as checks) and 2 blocks of 26 entries for the full-sib and half-sib families (two commercial hybrids used as checks).
