Recruitment efforts at American universities show that China continues to be targeted by admissions and international enrollment management teams. By prioritizing Chinese nationals, a lack of international student diversity on university campuses in the United States results. The purpose of this qualitative study was threefold: to examine international student diversity at Northeastern University-Seattle; to gain an understanding of the academic and social experiences of Chinese international graduate students; to determine if and how international student diversity impacts the academic and social experiences of this population. This phenomenological qualitative study involved interviews with six Chinese international students to understand their academic and social experiences and the role diversity played in those experiences. The results suggested that Chinese international students at Northeastern University-Seattle 1) believe that diversity exists on campus, 2) find communicating in English to be a constant challenge in academic and social environments, and 3) are satisfied with the accessibility/approachability of faculty and advisors. The findings revealed that international student diversity does not influence the academic and social experiences of Chinese international students, but language diversity does. These findings can benefit administrators, faculty, staff, and advisors who work closely with this population, as well as recruitment and international enrollment management teams who recruit Chinese international students"--Author's abstract.

Qualitative data were collected in the form of student and staff member interviews and educational policies from an urban university in Canada. Generally, the participants have varied understanding of student engagement from their experiences and cultural backgrounds. The determining factors that influence Chinese international graduate students' engagement in Canadian institutions include cultural differences, language barriers and identities, student motivation, sense of belonging and community inclusivity, the expectations of parents, instructors, and peers, personality, interests, financial burdens and employment barriers, and gender-based differences. To better engage in and out of the classroom, Chinese international graduate students need the support of their academic and social engagement and the supporting resources. They need the support from the following areas: academic and professional development, language and cultural awareness, critical awareness and engagement, the environment based on equity, diversity, and inclusivity, sense of belonging, student voice and leadership, financial resources, health life including mental health, safety and wellness, and time management. Implications from this study suggest deconstructing the Western dominant ways of the understanding of student engagement. These findings provide some practical suggestions for Chinese international graduate students to better engage in Canadian graduate institutions and for staff to better support Chinese graduate international students. They also suggest some directions for future research.

Book excerpt: At UCSB the number of degree seeking undergraduate Chinese international students increased from 6 to 163 between 2010 and 2012. With such a controversial and much discussed topic of international student enrollment at U.S universities, this was the perfect time for me to interview Chinese international students. With the help of Kathy Charmaz' (2006) descriptive book on how to use grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1965) and a computer based software AntConc 3.2 created by professor Laurence Anthony, I used a quantitative interview method to analyze my interviews with twelve undergraduate and graduate students. The interviews revealed that these students had highly educated parents with the intentions of sending their students abroad from an early age. This in combination with the collectivist conservative culture and the concept of filial piety (Deutsch, 2004) create hard working students with a drive to attend prestigious universities for academic, cultural, and social reasons. As previous research has shown, Chinese international students focus on academics first and then leisure (Li & Stodolska, 2006) with challenges both academic and social. The UCSB academic and social culture is unique (e.g. acceptance of sports and fitness), thus creating both a unique lifestyle and experience for Chinese students.
