Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Immortal Life The theme of this work is one upon which Mr. Weiss meditated as long and deeply, perhaps, and with as intense an interest, as any contemporary. It engaged him during his whole adult life, and was never far from his mind. The value of these meditations was not derived solely from his possession of a subtile and penetrating intellect, warmed by poetic sensibility, and winged with imagination. It proceeded yet more from his mental attitude audit-he point of view assumed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Placing hut little value upon the points which divide sects, and regarding them more as apparent than as real antagonists, l have deemed it more important to write upon princi ples which lie at the foundation of Morals and Religion, which unite, rather than divide mankind. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The story of modern medicine and bioethics—and, indeed, race relations—is refracted beautifully, and movingly.”—Entertainment Weekly NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM HBO® STARRING OPRAH WINFREY AND ROSE BYRNE • ONE OF THE “MOST INFLUENTIAL” (CNN), “DEFINING” (LITHUB), AND “BEST” (THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER) BOOKS OF THE DECADE • ONE OF ESSENCE’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS • WINNER OF THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE HEARTLAND PRIZE FOR NONFICTION NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Entertainment Weekly • O: The Oprah Magazine • NPR • Financial Times • New York • Independent (U.K.) • Times (U.K.) • Publishers Weekly • Library Journal • Kirkus Reviews • Booklist • Globe and Mail Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave. Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family—past and present—is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family—especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. Deborah was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Had they killed her to harvest her cells? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance? Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earthly Trials and Glory of the Immortal Life: Embracing Numerous Examples of the Struggles and Triumphs in Christian Life Standing as we do between the mortal and the immortal, constantly liable to be removed from this into that, it is well to be assured of what awaits na - to be conversant with that which we must meet. The considerations herein expressed are for every household in the land. That they may guide some mind in its search after what is true, that they may confirm some who are doubting, quicken some who are hesitating, stir the thoughtless, and help those who haveflow views to grasp the divine ideal, is the humble wish of the writer. That the work may carry consolation to many death smitten circles is the fervent prayer, with the hope that it will also give glad conceptions to all who look upon this picture of the glories of the immortal life, inasmuch as its brightest and only worthy tints have been borrowed from the sketches of divinest models the sacred artists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Beyond Life: A Study of Immortality This little book on Immortality is frankly from the standpoint of a Chris tian believer, whose chief interest is in theology. But it has genuine sympathy and respect for the philosopher and the scientist who know not whether to look for an abiding city or to fold their hands for a final rest. These pages may pos sibly seem unfair to the exact attitude which distinguished philosophers and sci entists would maintain. But perhaps, should they look into them, they will forgive misrepresentation, because un intentional, and because to see truth whole is a task worth many blunders, if to attempt it may become a habit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
