Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hindu thought has undergone a major reconfiguration in the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, in response to its encounter with the forces of modernity. A key element in this reconfiguration is the perception of Hinduism itself as a universal religion; or, as a catalyst promoting the emergence of a universal religion, or, at the very least, as promoting religious universalism. This book examines the views of several major Hindu thinkers of this period, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi prominent among them, on this potent theme of modern Hinduism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of different religions of the world shows that in essence they are one, they differ only in non-essentials, in minor things. Depending on the circumstances and environments all the big religions of the world invented their own Gods and propagated their doctrines, dogmas, principles, rituals, ceremonies, techniques and procedures. They all teach the eternity of soul. All religions admit that apart from the body which perishes, there is something which does not change like the body, a part that is immutable, eternal and never dies. The essential of man has no beginning and does not have an end. Above this eternal nature there is another eternal being without end-God who is both the creator and the destroyer. This supreme authority is controlling, governing and guiding every existence in the whole of creation lawfully. He is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient. The essence of all religions is to know God, to realize Him in the soul, to establish an inner attunement with that supreme unknown power, to become one with God. Each religion represents a great truth, a particular excellence something which is its soul. They all are looking at truth from different stand points, birth, education they are supplementary to one another, not contradictory. The truth is that all these religions are but phases of one Eternal Religion. One infinite religion existed through all eternity and will ever exist. This one religion is expressing itself in various countries in various ways. This essence constitutes the universal basis of all religions and can prepare a ground for one universal religion. Which must be able to supply food for all the various types of minds in order to satisfy the largest portion of mankind.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of the World: An Outline of the Great Religious Systems The following conclusions will probably occur to the reader: (i) There is a measure of good in each of the great religions; (2) It is not true that one religion is as good as another (3) The Christian religion alone is altogether good; (4) The false systems cannot be regarded as progressive steps toward the true; (5) The true religion derives little or nothing from the false It gives a light to every age; it gives, but borrows none (6) The false philosophies which are from time to time advanced against the Christian religion are nearly or quite all borrowed from the erroneous sys tems of the past; (7) Christianity is the absolute re ligion; that is, it is wholly free from error and contains all good; It alone reveals the true God (9) It alone presents the ideal man; (10) It alone suggests a plan for the reconciliation of guilty man and offended God; (i I) It is the only moral system; (12) It is fair, there fore, to regard it as final; I 3) It is destined to be the universal religion. Jesus shall reign where'er the sun doth his successive journeys run. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book presents in the words of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) a history of Vedanta, the deep exploration of the inner human world going back to the most ancient rishis or seers whose testimony is still revered in India. He traces the tradition up to the beginning of the twentieth century, showing how the dynamics of social structures within Vedanta and the appearance from within Vedanta of traditions such as Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism influenced and molded the tradition. In addition, he studies the impact of the Western, Abrahamic invasions of India that began around the eleventh century CE. These brought to bear on Vedanta a worldview which operated on the assumption that the physical world was the primary reality and that the kind of radical exploration of the inner world embraced by Vedanta was highly suspect and not valid. The Vedantic tradition adapted in many different ways, producing a variety of philosophical positions that are still extant today. Along with these traditions went various forms of yoga or self-transformation, in Vedanta the key to experiencing the inner meaning of not only philosophy, but also of our human condition, and of reality itself. This tradition presents four contexts of experience (chatushpad), suggesting the “right brain” mode of approach as described by Iain McGilchrist (2009). Under the influence of Shri Ramakrishna (1836-1886) Vivekananda gained access to vijnana or a knowledge higher than those classically described and known in the chatushpad. Vijnana permitted the acceptance of not only the traditional, deeply experiential truths of Vedanta, but also of the validity of Western materialism when seen as related to each other on a continuum of consciousness to be traversed by contemporary forms of yoga. I see the result as a resolution of “right-left” brain conflict à la McGilchrist and thereby a model for universal human understanding, conciliation and co-operation. In my introduction I attempt to show how the whole picture can be related both experientially and conceptually to matrices of consciousness developed in India as far back as the early medieval period. A large glossary and index-cum concordance indicate the various contexts and depths of thought that emerge from Vivekananda’s multi-contextual vijnana.
