Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the birth of Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564). Vesalius’ experts and adepts focus on his life and work, the new insights he gave on the anatomy of the human body and the influence he had on the medical profession throughout the centuries. Special attention is given to the iconography in Vesalius’ “Fabrica” and “Epitome”, which, as a new medium of expression, has incited doctors and artists alike to copy the magnificent renaissance drawings. Book Synopsis Andreas Vesalius and The 'Fabrica' by : Rinaldo Fernando Canalis
Download or read book Andreas Vesalius and The 'Fabrica' written by Rinaldo Fernando Canalis and published by Cursor Mundi. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andreas Vesalius's fame derive from his writing of what is perhaps the most famous book in the history of medical science, De humanis corporis fabrica (1543), a treatise that within a few years transformed the imperfect art of anatomy into a modern science. This extraordinary work, however, came into being not just because of its author's genius and industry, but for other reasons that remain (despite a vast body of scholarship) inadequately explored. These questions, the historical moment from which they stem, and the setting in which Vesalius produced the Fabrica, form the core of this volume. Some of these significant factors include the short time during which De fabrica was produced, the debated authorship of its illustrations, and its immediate and subsequent impact on the teaching of anatomy. The book's significance within the context of present day views of its historical value, and the ever increasing fascination it evokes among scholars and collectors alike, are also examined.
Book Synopsis Violence and the Genesis of the Anatomical Image by : Rose Marie San Juan
Download or read book Violence and the Genesis of the Anatomical Image written by Rose Marie San Juan and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing excited early modern anatomists more than touching a beating heart. In his 1543 treatise, Andreas Vesalius boasts that he was able to feel life itself through the membranes of a heart belonging to a man who had just been executed, a comment that appears near the woodcut of a person being dissected while still hanging from the gallows. In this highly original book, Rose Marie San Juan confronts the question of violence in the making of the early modern anatomical image. Engaging the ways in which power operated in early modern anatomical images in Europe and, to a lesser extent, its colonies, San Juan examines literal violence upon bodies in a range of civic, religious, pedagogical, and “exploratory” contexts. She then works through the question of how bodies were thought to be constituted—systemic or piecemeal, singular or collective—and how gender determines this question of constitution. In confronting the issue of violence in the making of the anatomical image, San Juan explores not only how violence transformed the body into a powerful and troubling double but also how this kind of body permeated attempts to produce knowledge about the world at large. Provocative and challenging, this book will be of significant interest to scholars across fields in early modern studies, including art history and visual culture, science, and medicine.

This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andreas Vesalius, the Reformer of Anatomy At long intervals a bright particular star appears in the intellectual horizon, endowed with genius of such a super lative order as seemingly to comprise within itself the whole domain of an entire science. These men do not belong to any particular epoch in the development of the human mind. They are the eternal symbols of progress, and their history is the history of the science which they profess. Such men were Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, N ew ton, Lavoisier, and Bichat; and such also was Andreas Vesalius the anatomist. Young, enthusiastic, courageous and diligent, Vesalius dared to contradict the authority of Galen, corrected the anatomical mistakes of thirteen cen tuties and before his thirtieth year published the most ac curate, complete, and best illustrated treatise on anatomy that the world had ever seen. His industry, the success which crowned his efforts, the jealousies which his dis coveries aroused in the breasts of his contemporaries, the honors which were conferred upon him by Charles the Fifth and Philip the Second, his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and his tragic death - these are events which deserve to be chronicled by an abler pen than mine. Book Synopsis Picturing Punishment by : Anuradha Gobin
Download or read book Picturing Punishment written by Anuradha Gobin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picturing Punishment examines representations of criminal bodies as they moved in, through, and out of publicly accessible spaces in the city during punishment rituals in the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Once put to death, the criminal cadaver did not come to rest. Its movement through public spaces indicated the potent afterlife of the deviant body, especially its ability to transform civic life. Focusing on material culture associated with key sites of punishment, Anuradha Gobin argues that the circulation of visual media related to criminal punishments was a particularly effective means of generating discourse and formulating public opinion, especially regarding the efficacy of civic authority. Certain types of objects related to criminal punishments served a key role in asserting republican ideals and demonstrating the ability of officials to maintain order and control. Conversely, the circulation of other types of images, such as inexpensive paintings and prints, had the potential to subvert official messages. As Gobin shows, visual culture thus facilitated a space in which potentially dissenting positions could be formulated while also bringing together seemingly disparate groups of people in a quest for new knowledge. Combining a diverse array of sources including architecture, paintings, prints, anatomical illustrations, and preserved body parts, Picturing Punishment demonstrates how the criminal corpse was reactivated, reanimated, and in many ways reintegrated into society.
