She and her best friend Latoya built her Company Etibul into a multi- million-dollar business. Diana had it all, and her Tithe has kept her fathers church with plenty of meat in the storehouse. Even with all the good luck and newfound fortune, Diana was not happy with her life. She was thirty years old and never knew the experiences of sex. Her clock was ticking and Dianas yearning for marriage swung her into Craig Hampton, and he took her for the ride of her life. She ends up losing her virginity, and trust in Gods word. After recovering from a brutal gang rape and six month drug induced comma, Diana takes the law into her own hands, creating the mysterious Black Mistress. Diana had been torn and no longer had faith in Gods word. She was vengeful and destroying broken marriages was her way to ease the rage of what she felt, a betrayal from God, which lead her into the arms of a Michael. His kind of real love would cover her pain, until the day Diana crosses paths with her abusers. Forced to relive the invasion an emotional trauma from that terrible night ends with murder.

Book excerpt: Africa is a complicated place, and the Peace Corps Volunteers who have worked in 43 African nations have seen it all: from public executions to public celebrations to life in a time of AIDS. This heartfelt collection is the first of its kind to chronicle 50 years of Peace Corps service. Stories range from poignant to hilarious, involve political intrigue and cultural missteps, illuminating the joys and agony of volunteering abroad and representing the United States in the process. Sixty stories provide a broad overview and give readers a glimpse into the life and times of these brave volunteers, who each learned at least one new language and went to work in the villages and cities from Morocco to South Africa. They worked hard, too. But in these stories you will see that they also danced, faced death by elephant, and witnessed unbearably grim events. One is admired for her “big butt,” another reminded that he had taught proper police procedure in a time of civil unrest. Saying “I was there” is sometimes a bittersweet declaration.

Book excerpt: Much is known about the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Armageddon, and the Mayan end of times. Only a few know of the Great Reversal of the Magudans. A handful of shamans among this forgotten community of Africa heard the gong of the End sounding. That would be the beginning of their battle for the reversal of the fate of the world. Elsewhere, Goddess Isis is calling through Atete Ayyantu for the rise of the Seven Dancing Queens of Africas ancient Oracles. Many may rise in the name of Isis, but only her true daughters and sons could deliver the world from its impending doom. Ayyantu should awaken the Nyabinghi and the other priestess queens. To ensure the revival and survival of their people across the End, these Seven should rescue the Thirsty Cup from a ferocious medium of Maguda. The League of the Monarchs of the World headed by the Ethiopian Lion of Judah, Mengistu the military junta, Jalala the Magician, and China are also hunting for the Cup. Those who grab the Cup would be the superpowers of the New World. This battle, which involves the dead and the half-dead, would be peerless in the memory of the three winds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this companion volume to Parallel Worlds, Alma Gottlieb explores ideology and social practices among the Beng people of Côte d'Ivoire. Employing symbolic and postmodern perspectives, she highlights the dynamically paired notions of identity and difference, symbolized by the kapok tree planted at the center of every Beng village. "This book merits a number of readings. . . . An experiment in ethnography that future projects might well emulate." —Clarke K. Speed, American Anthropologist "[An] evocative, rich ethnography. . . . Gottlieb does anthropology a real service." —Misty L. Bastian, American Ethnologist "Richly detailed. . . . This book offers a nuanced descriptive analysis which commands authority." —Elizabeth Tonkin, Man "Exemplary. . . . Gottlieb's observations on identity and difference are not confined to rituals or other special occasions; rather she shows that these principles emerge with equal force during daily social life." —Monni Adams, Journal of African Religion "[An] excellent study." —John McCall, Journal of Folklore Research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the adequacy of the traditional theories of laughter and humor, suggests revised theories, and explores such areas as the aesthetics and ethics of humor, and the relation of amusement to other mental states. Theories of laughter and humor originated in ancient times with the view that laughter is an expression of feelings of superiority over another person. This superiority theory was held by Plato, Aristotle, and Hobbes. Another aspect of laughter, noted by Aristotle and Cicero and neglected until Kant and Schopenhauer developed it into the incongruity theory, is that laughter is often a reaction to the perception of some incongruity. According to the third and latest traditional theory, the relief theory of Herbert Spencer and Freud, laughter is the venting of superfluous nervous energy. Historical examples of all these theories are presented along with hybrid theories such as those of Descartes and Bergson. The book also features traditional explorations of the place of humor in aesthetics, drama, and literature. This is the first work in the last fifty years to include the classic sources in the philosophy of humor and the first to present theories by contemporary philosophers.
