Book excerpt: Biomass conversion into drop-in chemicals using novel heterogeneous bulk- and nano-scale catalysts is currently a hot research topic with the aim of replacing petrochemicals in the chemical industry. Considering the importance of this subject to the scientific community, Advanced Catalysis for Drop-in Chemicals provides the latest developments in the catalytic synthesis of drop-in chemicals mainly from lignocellulose, carbohydrates (cellulose, hemicellulose, C6 and C5 sugars, and their derivatives), lignin, and glycerol. The role of both heterogeneous bulk solid and nanostructured catalysts, along with their advantages and disadvantages for drop-in chemicals synthesis are critically summarized. Addressing the frontiers and prospects for using drop-in chemicals in place of petrochemicals in the chemical industry is also a key topic of this book. • Describes fossil fuels, biomass, drop-in chemicals, catalysis, and nano- and atomic-scale catalysts • Includes pre- and post-treatment strategies for biomass upgrading • Provides green catalytic processes for drop-in chemicals synthesis • Outlines stabilization of nano- and atomic-scale catalysts • Examines using drop-in chemicals in place of petrochemicals in the chemical industry

Book excerpt: In the last decades, inedible lignocellulosic biomasses have attracted significant attention for being abundant resources that are not in competition with agricultural land or food production and, therefore, can be used as starting renewable material for the production of a wide variety of platform chemicals. The three main components of lignocellulosic biomasses are cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, complex biopolymers that can be converted into a pool of platform molecules including sugars, polyols, alchols, ketons, ethers, acids and aromatics. Various technologies have been explored for their one-pot conversion into chemicals, fuels and materials. However, in order to develop new catalytic processes for the selective production of desired products, a complete understanding of the molecular aspects of the basic chemistry and reactivity of biomass derived molecules is still crucial. This Special Issue reports on recent progress and advances in the catalytic valorization of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin model molecules promoted by novel heterogeneous systems for the production of energy, fuels and chemicals.

Book excerpt: Since the first works introducing the aluminum intercalated clay family in the early 1970s, interest in the synthesis of pillared interlayered clays has increased tremendously, especially research into the properties and applications of new synthesis methods. The need for solids that could be used as cracking catalysts with larger pores than zeolitic materials has spurred the synthesis of new porous materials from clays. Pillared Clays and Related Catalysts reviews the properties and applications of pillared clays and other layered materials used as catalysts, focusing on: the acidity of pillared clays and the effect it has on catalytic performance the use of pillared clays as supports for catalytically active phases, and the use of the resulting solids in environmentally friendly reactions the applications of the selective reduction of NOx the comparison between the reactions of pillared clays and anionic clays.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Selective hydrogenations in the aqueous phase are an important transformation in the context of developing biorefinery concepts. In this report the application and optimisation of nitrogen-doped carbon (NDC) supported Pd nanoparticles as hydrogenation catalysts is discussed in the context of directing support (e.g. N) chemistry for improved catalytic performance in the aqueous phase. As a demonstrative example, the aqueous phase hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone (e.g. a platform for polyamide production) is utilised. Catalyst supports were prepared based on an initial hydrothermal synthesis to yield NDC xerogels (from biomass precursors), the chemistry of which (e.g. functionality) was directed using a secondary thermal carbonisation (Tc) step at different temperatures (i.e. 350, 550, 750, 900 and 1000 °C). After Pd introduction, it was found that size, dispersion and electronic structure of the formed nanoparticles is affected by the surface chemistry of the NDC. This consequently led to higher turn-over frequency (TOF) and stability of the prepared catalysts compared to a "nitrogen-free" carbon supported Pd and a commercial, carbon supported Pd (Pd/AC) catalyst. Pd/NDC 900 (featuring predominantly quaternary and pyridinic N) catalysed the complete conversion of phenol at 99% selectivity to cyclohexanone, with excellent stability over 11 recycles and no discernible catalyst sintering or leaching (in contrast to the commercial catalyst). High catalytic stability, activity and selectivity make the Pd/NDC 900 catalyst highly applicable for aqueous phase hydrogenation reactions, whilst the general principle opens scope for support tailoring for application (e.g. biorefinery hydrogenations) and the development of structure/activity relationships
