Book excerpt: "How do you land a car-sized rover on the surface of Mars, resolve a five-hour traffic jam or save a herd of caribou from near extinction? Ask an engineer! Engineers are problem solvers. They use their math, science and technology skills to find creative solutions to problems that need fixing. In Engineered! bestselling author Shannon Hunt explores nine feats of engineering and the step-by-step process that engineers followed to get to a winning solution. The book opens with an illustrated flow chart that explains the engineering design process in seven easy-to-follow steps (e.g., define the problem, identify requirements, build and test a prototype, etc.). Then, these steps are applied to nine real-life engineering stories - each from a different field, such as civil, mechanical or environmental engineering. By following a step-by-step process, engineers are able to come up with some ingenious (and sometimes crazy!) ideas that really work, like building a bridge taller than the Eiffel Tower to fix that five-hour long traffic jam. With direct curriculum applications, and following the guidelines in the Next Generation Science Standards, Engineered! is a must-have for schools, libraries and anywhere a maker space is found!"--

Book excerpt: The Geotechnical Engineering Investigation Handbook provides the tools necessary for fusing geological characterization and investigation with critical analysis for obtaining engineering design criteria. The second edition updates this pioneering reference for the 21st century, including developments that have occurred in the twenty years since the first edition was published, such as: • Remotely sensed satellite imagery • Global positioning systems (GPS) • Geophysical exploration • Cone penetrometer testing • Earthquake studies • Digitizing of data recording and retrieval • Field and laboratory testing and instrumentation • Use of the Internet for data retrieval The Geotechnical Engineering Investigation Handbook, Second Edition is a comprehensive guide to a complete investigation: study to predict geologic conditions; test-boring procedures; various geophysical methods and when each is appropriate; various methods to determine engineering properties of materials, both laboratory-based and in situ; and formulating design criteria based on the results of the analysis. The author relies on his 50+ years of professional experience, emphasizing identification and description of the elements of the geologic environment, the data required for analysis and design of the engineering works, and procuring the data. By using a practical approach to problem solving, this book helps engineers consider geological phenomena in terms of the degree of their hazard and the potential risk of their occurrence.

Book excerpt: This book is designed to serve as a textbook for students and a reference for today's engineering officers, port engineers, superintendent engineers, and other maritime professionals. Steam turbine propulsion systems are included, but the coverage has been reduced in recognition of the popularity of main propulsion diesel engines, covered in volume 2, and the anticipated increasing applications of aeroderivative gas turbines. Reciprocating steam engines have been eliminated. Pumps, pumping systems, and heat exchangers are given extensive coverage. Computer applications for machinery and system management are presented, including an entire chapter on maintenance management. Relevant material on international and national laws, classification society requirements, and standards, such as ISO 9000 series and the ISM code, are included in the text. The characteristics of fuels are presented along with a discussion of fuel testing and analysis, and a section on bunkering. A chapter on safety and management discusses shipboard engineering operations, shipyard repair planning and economics, and safety management. Each chapter includes review questions and references for additional study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some years ago when I was chair of the department of civil and environmental engineering, a colleague introduced me to a visitor from Sandia Laboratories, perhaps the largest developer of armaments and weapons systems in the world. We had a nice visit, and as we chatted, the talk naturally centered on the visitor’s engineering work. It turned out that his job in recent years had been to develop a new acoustic triggering device for bombs. As he explained it, the problem with bombs was that the plunger triggering mechanism could fail if the bomb hit at an angle, and thus the explosives would not detonate. To get around this, he dev- oped an acoustic trigger that would detonate the explosives as soon as the bomb hit any solid surface, even at an angle. As he talked, I watched his face. His enthusiasm for his work was clearly e- dent, and his animated explanations of what they had developed at Sandia exuded pride and excitement. I thought about asking him what it felt like to have spent his engineering career designing better ways to kill people or to destroy property – the sole purpose of a bomb. I wondered how many people had been killed because this man had dev- oped a clever acoustic triggering device. But good sense and decorum prevailed and I did not ask him such questions. We parted as friends and in good spirits.
