Surrounding towns and smaller cities survive the meteors but are thrust into an apocalyptic nightmare. The survivors quickly realize it was not meteors that destroyed the major cities; it was a deliberate and orchestrated attack from above. The power quickly goes out, and cell phones become useless. People begin to loot and kill for basic necessities. Survivors from across the country must now survive not only the attack but each other. What is left of the US population is trying to get to an Air Force base in the Pacific Northwest that is rumored to be operational. Before they can organize anything, extraterrestrials begin showing up to take care of the surviving human population. Most of the surviving humans are killed, but a select few are spared and taken onto the mothership. These are what the aliens are calling "the Chosen Ones." A few of the chosen ones happen upon some sinister things the aliens are doing to humans aboard. The aliens eventually reveal their plans for the human race, and it does not sit well with anyone. The aliens have the upper hand. The humans are trapped with no way of fighting back. Any resistance is quickly met with deadly repercussions. Three brave survivors hatch a plan to destroy the mothership and hopefully save humanity. No matter if they succeed or fail, the human race will never be the same again. Life on Earth will forever be changed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, the work of philosopher-psychologist William James has undergone something of a renaissance. In this contribution to the trend, William Gavin argues that James's plea for the "reinstatement of the vague" to its proper place in our experience should be regarded as a seminal metaphor for his thought in general. The concept of vagueness applies to areas of human experience not captured by facts that can be scientifically determined nor by ideas that can be formulated in words. In areas as seemingly diverse as psychology, religion, language, and metaphysics, James continually highlights the importance of the ambiguous, the contextual, the pluralistic, or the uncertain over the foundational. Indeed, observes the author, only in a vague unfinished world can the human self, fragile as it is, have the possibility of making a difference or exercising the will to believe. Taking James's plea seriously, Gavin traces the idea of the vague beyond the philosopher's own texts. In "conversations" with other philosophers--including Peirce, Marx, Dewey, and, to a lesser extent, Rorty and Derrida--the author shows that a version of James's position is central to their thought. Finally, Gavin looks for the pragmatic upshot of James's plea, reaffirming the importance of the vague in two concrete areas: the doctor-patient relationship in medicine and the creation and experiencing of modern art. In conclusion, Gavin argues that James's work is itself vague, in a positive sense, and that as such it functions as a "spur" to the reader.

Book excerpt: Addiction, increasingly perceived as a heterogeneous brain disorder, is one of the most peculiar psychiatric pathologies in that its management involves various, often non-overlapping, resources from the biological, psychological, medical, economical, social, and legal realms. Despite extensive efforts from the players of these various fields, to date there are no reliably effective treatments of addiction. This may stem from a lack of understanding of the etiology and pathophysiology of this disorder as well as from the lack of interest into the potential differences among patients in the way they interact compulsively with their drug. This book offers an overview of the psychobiology of addiction and its current management strategies from pharmacological, social, behavioural, and psychiatric points of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marmaduke Pickthall was a prolific British novelist, essayist, journalist, and short story writer who was positively received by his contemporaries for his fictional oeuvre, but is hardly known in the current literary world. Despite his obvious talents, Pickthall was unfortunately ignored when the English literary canon was formed in the mid-twentieth century. Today, he is only remembered for his conversion to Islam, his Turkish sympathies, and his translation of the Holy Quran to English in 1930. Ebtisam A. Sadiq, Naela H. Danish, and Afra S. Al-Shiban rely on extensive research of nineteenth-century British literature with the hope of reintroducing Pickthall to the literary world. In comprehensive analysis that includes the forgotten authors Eastern novels, Western tales, and collections of short stories, the researchers utilize contemporary theories of criticismparticularly postcolonialism, modern realist traditions, and feminismto scrutinize and highlight the nature of his contribution to English literature. Included are examinations of Pickthalls affiliation or withdrawal from literary traditions like Victorianism and Modernism and what exactly determines his canonical status. Marmaduke Pickthall Reinstated shares research and examinations of a forgotten authors literary works with the intent that they finally find a long overdue place in mainstream English literature.

Book excerpt: Exposure to chronic stress has cumulative adverse effects on physical and mental health, considered to be the consequence of chronic exposure to high levels of stress hormones. Consequently, there is extensive research in progress to investigate and better understand how the brain organises neuroendocrine stress responses and how interventions may be able to moderate these responses to improve mental and physical health. Neuroendocrinology of Stress highlights current knowledge of the organisation and physiology of these stress response systems, how the impact of dysregulation of these systems is being investigated, and considers the ways in which contributions to both psychiatric and physical diseases resulting from chronic stress effects can be critically addressed in basic research Written by a team of internationally renowned researchers, each chapter presents a succinct summary of the very latest developments in the field Both print and enhanced e-book versions are available Illustrated in full colour throughout This is the second volume in a new Series "Masterclass in Neuroendocrinology", a co- publication between Wiley and the INF (International Neuroendocrine Federation) that aims to illustrate highest standards and encourage the use of the latest technologies in basic and clinical research and hopes to provide inspiration for further exploration into the exciting field of neuroendocrinology.
