Download or read book A Midwife's Tale written by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-12-22 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • Drawing on the diaries of one woman in eighteenth-century Maine, "A truly talented historian unravels the fascinating life of a community that is so foreign, and yet so similar to our own" (The New York Times Book Review). Between 1785 and 1812 a midwife and healer named Martha Ballard kept a diary that recorded her arduous work (in 27 years she attended 816 births) as well as her domestic life in Hallowell, Maine. On the basis of that diary, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich gives us an intimate and densely imagined portrait, not only of the industrious and reticent Martha Ballard but of her society. At once lively and impeccably scholarly, A Midwife's Tale is a triumph of history on a human scale.

Book Synopsis The Mountain Meadows Massacre by : Juanita Brooks
Download or read book The Mountain Meadows Massacre written by Juanita Brooks and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Fall of 1857, some 120 California-bound emigrants were killed in lonely Mountain Meadows in southern Utah; only eighteen young children were spared. The men on the ground after the bloody deed took an oath that they would never mention the event again, either in public or in private. The leaders of the Mormon church also counseled silence. The first report, soon after the massacre, described it as an Indian onslaught at which a few white men were present, only one of whom, John D. Lee, was actually named. With admirable scholarship, Mrs. Brooks has traced the background of conflict, analyzed the emotional climate at the time, pointed up the social and military organization in Utah, and revealed the forces which culminated in the great tragedy at Mountain Meadows. The result is a near-classic treatment which neither smears nor clears the participants as individuals. It portrays an atmosphere of war hysteria, whipped up by recitals of past persecutions and the vision of an approaching "army" coming to drive the Mormons from their homes.

The arrival of the railroad and the interurban brought commuters willing to travel from Grove City into Columbus. The 1960s saw the construction of Interstates 71 and 270, which spurred the community's growth. Though its population has surpassed 37,000 residents, Grove City has retained its small-town appeal while offering residents and visitors a revitalized town center, a major arts festival, and the "world's largest" alumni softball tournament.
Book Synopsis Mendelssohn in Performance by : Siegwart Reichwald
Download or read book Mendelssohn in Performance written by Siegwart Reichwald and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring many aspects of Felix Mendelssohn's multi-faceted career as musician and how it intersects with his work as composer, contributors discuss practical issues of music making such as performance space, instruments, tempo markings, dynamics, phrasings, articulations, fingerings, and instrument techniques. They present the conceptual and ideological underpinnings of Mendelssohn's approach to performance, interpretation, and composing through the contextualization of specific performance events and through the theoretic actualization of performances of specific works. Contributors rely on manuscripts, marked or edited scores, and performance parts to convey a deeper understanding of musical expression in 19th-century Germany. This study of Mendelssohn's work as conductor, pianist, organist, violist, accompanist, music director, and editor of old and new music offers valuable perspectives on 19th-century performance practice issues.
Download or read book Orchard Grove written by Vincent Zandri and published by Polis Books. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something improved for me when Lana Cattivo moved in next door. I guess you’d have to call it something else, desire, since lust wasn’t entirely accurate. But then, neither was love. Not by a long shot. From Thriller and Shamus Award winner Vincent Zandri comes a thriller that shows danger doesn't need to find you - because it's already right next door. Sometimes fences make for nice neighbors. Other times they hide the evil within. Orchard Grove is a town like any other, with quiet neighborhoods and apple groves . . . though Ethan, the depressed screenplay writer, and his secretive wife, Susan, would tell you differently. So would the seductive serial killer living next door. The apple trees are fertilized with evil, and the backyard fences aren’t enough to stop the manipulative mind games and dangerous lies. The lines between good and evil are blurred, and then erased, as Ethan does what it takes to survive. Orchard Grove is a thriller from a writer lauded as one of the very best working today, that will keep you turning pages long into the night.
