Book excerpt: A vivid, unforgettable story of an unlikely sisterhood—an emotionally powerful and haunting tale of friendship that illuminates the plight of women in a traditional culture—from the author of the bestselling The Pearl That Broke Its Shell and When the Moon Is Low. For two decades, Zeba was a loving wife, a patient mother, and a peaceful villager. But her quiet life is shattered when her husband, Kamal, is found brutally murdered with a hatchet in the courtyard of their home. Nearly catatonic with shock, Zeba is unable to account for her whereabouts at the time of his death. Her children swear their mother could not have committed such a heinous act. Kamal’s family is sure she did, and demands justice. Barely escaping a vengeful mob, Zeba is arrested and jailed. As Zeba awaits trial, she meets a group of women whose own misfortunes have also led them to these bleak cells: thirty-year-old Nafisa, imprisoned to protect her from an honor killing; twenty-five-year-old Latifa, who ran away from home with her teenage sister but now stays in the prison because it is safe shelter; and nineteen-year-old Mezhgan, pregnant and unmarried, waiting for her lover’s family to ask for her hand in marriage. Is Zeba a cold-blooded killer, these young women wonder, or has she been imprisoned, as they have been, for breaking some social rule? For these women, the prison is both a haven and a punishment. Removed from the harsh and unforgiving world outside, they form a lively and indelible sisterhood. Into this closed world comes Yusuf, Zeba’s Afghan-born, American-raised lawyer, whose commitment to human rights and desire to help his motherland have brought him back. With the fate of this seemingly ordinary housewife in his hands, Yusuf discovers that, like Afghanistan itself, his client may not be at all what he imagines. A moving look at the lives of modern Afghan women, A House Without Windows is astonishing, frightening, and triumphant.

Book excerpt: An across the centuries extra-dimensional, extra-sensory dance of self discovery. The narrator is abandoned by, in turn, the 16th century teenage sailor Fernando, pre-teen Native Central American María, fugitive from the law fortyish León and the beautiful and saintly mid-twenties black, Gloria. After which is left behind the almost centenarian Granny Lise and the accessory-in-disaster Olaf. Each individual met, begins at different level of maturity, and progresses from there. Time is no longer linear. With ever-expanding limits, the characters time travel at will. After the soul leaves the body behind during what some call purgatory. Common emotions remain. Hungers remembered, do not. Encounters are innocent. Procreation impossible, no erotic drive exists. The history and geography is accurate, fictional characters supposedly with photographic memories and total recall. Disaster and catastrophe, as slapstick also, are integral to the fiction not added as gratuitous violence. All the characters are totally fictional the history and geographic detail, including the names of some real people historically important is completely factual. Those who have been to the locations described, will recognize them.

Book excerpt: In 1923, eight-year-old Barbara Newhall Follett began writing The House Without Windows as a birthday present for her mother on the small portable typewriter she had been using since she was four years old. Though later that year her manuscript burned in a house fire, she rewrote the entire story and her father, Wilson Follett, an editor at Knopf, supervised its publication in 1927. In this extended fantasy, a young girl, Eepersip, runs away from home to live in idyllic Nature (successively, a meadow, the sea, and, finally, the mountains).

The letters cover the period of Lawrence's Etruscan tour in the spring of 1927 as preparation for the writing of Sketches of Etruscan Places; the performance of his play, David, in London in May, and - above all - the writing, typing, private publication, promotion and immediate consequences of Lady Chatterley's Lover. He makes new acquaintances with writers and publishers in Europe (Max Mohr, Hans Carossa, Harry and Caresse Crosby); renews friendships which will stand him in good stead in times of poor health (the Huxleys, Aldington, the Brewsters); and rediscovers the bonds of family and old Eastwood friends. The volume provides annotation identifying persons and allusions, and includes a biographical introduction, illustrations, a full chronology and index.

Book excerpt: From the author of the widely praised Raising America--a compelling exploration of child genius told through the gripping stories of fifteen exceptionally gifted boys and girls, from a math wonder a century ago to young jazz and classical piano virtuosos today. A thought-provoking book for a time when parents anxiously aspire to raise "super children" and experts worry the nation is wasting the brilliant young minds it needs. Ann Hulbert examines the lives of children whose rare accomplishments have raised hopes about untapped human potential and questions about how best to nurture it. She probes the changing role of parents and teachers, as well as of psychologists and a curious press. Above all, she delves into the feelings of the prodigies themselves, who push back against adults more as the decades proceed. Among the children are the math genius Norbert Wiener, founder of cybernetics, a Harvard graduate student at age fifteen; two girls, a poet and a novelist, whose published work stirred debate in the 1920s; the movie superstar Shirley Temple and the African American pianist and composer Philippa Schuyler; the chess champion Bobby Fischer; computer pioneers and autistic "prodigious savants"; and musical prodigies, present and past. Off the Charts also tells the surprising inside stories of Lewis Terman's prewar study of high-IQ children and of the postwar talent search begun at Johns Hopkins, and discovers what Tiger Mom Amy Chua really has to tell us. But in these moving stories, it is the children who deliver the most important messages.

Book excerpt: The House Without Windows is an imaginative child's name for the world of untouched nature - because that world is itself nothing but one clear window upon beauty, which is a child's reality. The romantic story, printed exactly as written by a nine-year-old girl, is a clear and delicate record of discontent with ordinary pedestrian reality - with mere human parents and what they can provide. In meadows and woodland, by the sea, on the icy crags of mountains, the child - heroine, a runaway seeker, learns to understand the whispered language of nature. The story has something to say to children and perhaps even more to all who are interested in children. The volume contains an adequate explanatory note by the author's father.

Book excerpt: Although Heidegger's writings are not extensively concerned with the analysis of political concepts or with advocating particular arrangements of political institutions, his basic way of understanding the human relation to the world accords a constitutive significance to its social, cultural and historical dimensions. There is thus a political aspect to his thinking about every philosophical matter to which he turns his attention. This collection of essays is designed to identify, contextualize and critically evaluate the main phases of his intellectual development from that perspective.
