Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of Quiet: An Autobiography A few words of explanation are, I think, needed, when a book which has been anonymous for several years appears with an author's name on the title-page. My reason for putting my name to the book is in this case the simple one, that it seems foolish to go on trying to keep a secret which is no secret at all, and to persist in holding the mouth of the bag close, long after the cat has leapt out of it. There may, perhaps, be critics who will believe that I had a bad motive for originally withholding my name, just as the King in Aice in Wonderland triumphantly announces that the absence of the Knaves name at the end of the anonymous copy of verses proves his guilt. And there will perhaps be other critics, or more probably the same, who will think that the publication of my name now is a dodge or a device to achieve some end or other. Indeed, an amiable journalist said as much to me the other day, and hinted that to issue anonymous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved author of A Wrinkle in Time takes an introspective look at her life and muses on creativity in this memoir, the first of her Crosswicks Journals. Every so often I need OUT. . . . My special place is a small brook in a green glade, a circle of quiet from which there is no visible sign of human beings. . . . I sit there, dangling my legs and looking through the foliage at the sky reflected in the water, and things slowly come back into perspective. Set against the lush backdrop of Crosswicks, her family’s farmhouse in rural Connecticut, this deeply personal memoir details Madeleine L’Engle’s journey to find balance between her career as a Newbery Medal–winning author and her responsibilities as a wife, mother, teacher, and Christian. As she considers the roles that creativity, family, citizenship, and faith play in her life, L’Engle reveals the complexities behind the author whose works—honored with the National Book Award, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and countless other prizes—have long been cherished by children and adults alike. Written in simple, profound, and often humorous prose, A Circle of Quiet is an insightful woman’s elegant search for the meaning and purpose of her life. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Madeleine L’Engle including rare images from the author’s estate.

Book excerpt: Benson (1862-1925) was an English essayist, poet, author and academic, and the 28th Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. He is noted for writing the words to Land of Hope and Glory for the coronation of Edward VII. Born into a literary family, his brothers included E F Benson, known best for his Mapp and Lucia novels, and Robert Hugh Benson, a priest of the Church of England before converting to Roman Catholicism who also wrote many popular novels. Benson and one of his sisters suffered from a bipolar disorder inherited from their father, but despite his illness he was a distinguished academic and prolific author. He edited the correspondence of Queen Victoria and his literary criticisms of the poems of Rossetti and John Ruskin's writings rank among his best works. He also left one of the longest diaries ever written: some 4 million words. This short novel, written in the form of the narrator's autobiographical reflections, was published in 1907.

Book excerpt: A personal and cultural exploration of silence and its value in our lives—“[an] artful book, mixing autobiography, travel writing, meditation, and essay” (Independent, UK). In her late forties, after a noisy upbringing as one of six children and adulthood as a vocal feminist and mother, Sara Maitland found herself living alone in the country and, to her surprise, falling in love with silence. In this fascinating, intelligent, and beautifully written book, Maitland describes how she began to explore this new love, spending periods of silence in the Sinai desert, the Scottish hills, and a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye. Maitland also delves deep into the rich cultural history of silence, exploring its significance in fairy tale and myth, its importance to the Western and Eastern religious traditions, and its use in psychoanalysis and artistic expression. Her story culminates in her building a hermitage on an isolated moor in Galloway. “Her book is probably unique in its subject, and timely, because good, healing silence is becoming hard to find, and we may not know we need it” (Guardian, UK).

Book excerpt: The monumental bestseller Quiet has been recast in a new edition that empowers introverted kids and teens Susan Cain sparked a worldwide conversation when she published Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. With her inspiring book, she permanently changed the way we see introverts and the way introverts see themselves. The original book focused on the workplace, and Susan realized that a version for and about kids was also badly needed. This book is all about kids' world—school, extracurriculars, family life, and friendship. You’ll read about actual kids who have tackled the challenges of not being extroverted and who have made a mark in their own quiet way. You’ll hear Susan Cain’s own story, and you’ll be able to make use of the tips at the end of each chapter. There’s even a guide at the end of the book for parents and teachers. This insightful, accessible, and empowering book, illustrated with amusing comic-style art, will be eye-opening to extroverts and introverts alike.

Book excerpt: Nakata's ghosts won't stay dead... A chambermaid's seemingly innocent request is granted, an act of kindness that has dire consequences for a guest... An unearthly light in an abandoned bungalow resolves the mystery of a missing child... An invitation to a clifftop graveyard leads to a harrowing chase by things that remain unseen... In an abandoned hotel, work is underway to upgrade the building but something is stalking the residents... There is a hidden agenda to paranormal researcher Richard Nakata's investigations into these houses. A commission that witnesses cattle lowing in the cow-sheds of Stack's Farm long after they've been slaughtered, and a reckoning in the showhouse of 24 Glasshouse as he and his colleagues pay the price for creating their own ghost... Simon Kurt Unsworth reinvents the classic English ghost story with a portmanteau collection that takes the haunted house genre and makes it scream... quietly. The houses are quiet, it's the residents who are screaming.

Book excerpt: Goodreads Best Children's Book of 2022 Kid's Indie Next List Pick Emile is not shy—he is quiet. Emile may seem timid and shy on the outside, but on the inside he is bustling with imagination. While grownups and even other kids may see Emile as the shy kid who doesn’t raise his hand in class, we know that Emile is actually a high-seas adventurer, a daring explorer, and a friend to wild beasts. This story honors and encourages the beauty of knowing ourselves for exactly who we are. Emile’s world shows us that the mind of a quiet child can be as rich, expansive, and bold as that of any other (more extroverted) child.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the house built by Ann Peters’s father on a hill in eastern Wisconsin, House Hold offers many views: cornfields and glacial lakes, fast food parking lots and rural highways, Manhattan apartments and Brooklyn brownstones. Peters revisits the modern split-level where she grew up in Wisconsin, remembering her architect father. Against the background of this formative space, she charts her roaming story through two decades of New York City apartments, before traveling to a cabin in the mountains of Colorado and finally purchasing an old farmhouse in upstate New York. More than a memoir of remembered landscapes, House Hold is also an expansive contemplation of America, a meditation on place and property, and an exploration of how literature shapes our thinking about the places we live. A gifted prose stylist, Peters seamlessly combines her love of buildings with her love of books. She wanders through the rooms of her past but also through what Henry James called “the house of fiction,” interweaving personal narrative with musings on James, Willa Cather, William Dean Howells, Paule Marshall, William Maxwell, and others. Peters reflects on the romance of pastoral retreat, the hazards of nostalgia, America’s history of expansion and land ownership, and the conflicted desires to put down roots and to hit the road. Throughout House Hold, she asks how places make us who we are.
