A monumental series, it provides biographical and constituency studies covering the period. This widely praised, groundbreaking introductory survey, previously only available as part of the six-volume work, is now published as a separate volume. The first ever account of the early seventeenth-century House of Commons as an institution, it shows how there was a crisis of legislation in the 1620s and how the committee of the whole House transformed the way the House operated. Covering a period of intense historiographical interest and debate, it draws on the most comprehensive treatment of politics, elections and parliament in the period ever assembled, the result of research in over 170 archives.

Book Synopsis The House of Commons, 1604-1610 by : Wallace Notestein
Download or read book The House of Commons, 1604-1610 written by Wallace Notestein and published by New Haven : Yale University Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon a wealth of primary sources and a life of research in the field, this history provides a fascinating discussion of the development of the House of Commons during the early years of Stuart rule. Mr. Notestein was completing work on the manuscript at his death in 1969. The basic issues characterizing the confrontations between James I and the Commons are examined, including the matters of royal prerogatives that were increasingly questioned by the Commons in the period 1604-1610. To these are added the awkward problems attendant upon the prospective Union of England and Scotland under a monarch of Scottish origins. Mr. Notestein makes it clear that the Commons, following the age of Elizabeth, was consciously searching out a new sense of itself and its powers; neither James nor the House of Lords was able to appreciate fully the trends accompanying the Commons' quest for a broadened role in national affairs. Mr. Notestein's work is a superb narrative constantly enriched by in-depth research and enlivened by an impressive mixture of analytical commentary and personalized speculation.

Download or read book Theater of State written by Chris Kyle and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the expansion and creation of new public spheres in and around Parliament in the early Stuart period. It focuses on two closely interconnected narratives: the changing nature of communication and discourse within parliamentary chambers and the interaction of Parliament with the wider world of political dialogue and the dissemination of information. Concentrating on the rapidly changing practices of Parliament in print culture, rhetorical strategy, and lobbying during the 1620s, this book demonstrates that Parliament not only moved toward the center stage of politics but also became the center of the post-Reformation public sphere. Theater of State begins by examining the noise of politics inside Parliament, arguing that the House of Commons increasingly became a place of noisy, hotly contested speech. It then turns to the material conditions of note-taking in Parliament and how and the public became aware of parliamentary debates. The book concludes by examining practices of lobbying, intersections of the public with Parliament within Westminster Palace, and Parliament's expanding print culture. The author argues overall that the Crown dispensed with Parliament because it was too powerful and too popular.
