Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Roman Empire in German Literature The subject of this monograph was suggested to me some two years ago by Professor Calvin Thomas while I was a graduate student at Columbia University. Originally the study was to be entitled Literary Satire at the Expense of the Holy Roman Empire, but in the course of the work it was found advisable to adopt the present broader, more euphonious title. This change, important as it may seem at first blush, is after all of minor significance, for the very nature of the subject tends to encourage an unfavorable, satirical attitude. Not only does this attitude gradually become predominant as time goes on, but it is also the most interesting angle from which the Holy Roman Empire could be considered. In the field of literary criticism two distinct types of subject-matter may be distinguished, viz., the intensive and the extensive, the former dealing in minute detail with some single phase of a given writer or group of writers, the latter treating synoptically a given phenomenon extending over a longer period of time. That works of the latter class, to which the present monograph belongs, cannot within reasonable scope achieve any great degree of completeness in the presentation of pertinent matter is quite apparent. I have therefore endeavored to offer only such material as seemed of intrinsic value. It is a privilege to acknowledge my great obligations to Professor Thomas for suggesting the subject, and for the aid and inspiration which he gave me not only while I was engaged in the present work, but during the entire five years that I have known him. The lines of social development are becoming specialized, and in particular the Count's gifts to religious foundations, mainly to the recluse Carthusians, have only an occasional interest for his history. I have therefore made no attempt at a complete commentary on these unpolitical documents of his. In like manner, since the narrative sources become here and there quite lengthy, a full transcript of the texts concerning Savoy has not been given for his reign. They are easy to find and no longer absolutely buried in other matter. Still even with these deductions I trust that everything essential to enable the reader to test the history has been provided. The history of a country like Savoy, which owed its im portance to its being on a border and traversed by two European highroads, is naturally in frequent connection with the general history of the Holy Roman Empire. Consequently, I have been obliged from time to time to insert fragments of the imperial annals; but I have done so only when they coincided with those of Savoy, as seemed most advisable in a study with such a definite object as this. In fact, the history of surrounding lands has been introduced but in so far as it explains the events and conditions of Savoy. On going down from Oxford in 1913, I was able - through the kindness of the President and Fellows of S. John's College and the Trustees of the Aubrey Moore Studentship - to plan out for myself a long period of research work in certain foreign Universities. It was my intention to spend the first year of the time in Paris; the second year in Freiburg, Wurzburg, and Munich; and, possibly, a third year in Kieff, Moscow, and Petrograd. This essay is - in its present state - part of the result of the year spent in Paris. I chose Paris because I thought that - in spite of the English tradition to the contrary - French scholarship was wider, deeper, and more balanced than German. A closer acquaintance with the work of French scholars more than justified this choice. I found - in the sphere of late Roman history - little or nothing of the political bias that has distorted nearly every word written by Germans about the first six centuries of the Christian era.
