The liturgy for the Days of Awe are the longest and most complex of the year, leaving a large number of attendees without a complete understanding of the occasion's significance. Entering The High Holy Days provides historical background and interpretation of the ideas, practices, and liturgy and lends them contemporary relevance to today's Jews. Reuven Hammer received his ordination and doctorate in theology from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He is the former president of the Rabbinical Assembly and head of the Rabbinical Court of the Masorti Movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is viewed as the holiest day of the year for Israelites. It is a day of Sabbath rest, and it is the only day a fast is required from sunset on one day, to sundown the next day; no food or drink; we are also to set aside other things that connect us to this world and that give comfort to our bodies. Traditionally, Israelites would not bath; they would not oil their bodies, no wearing of shoes, and no marital relations. It is a time of genuinely afflicting your soul. We are called to repent, change our hearts, and return to YAHUAH; it is a time of sincere self-assessment. We are to reach out and make amends to people that we need to make amends with; forgive people who seek forgiveness and let old grudges go. The purpose of all this affliction is to get our minds off of ourselves and focus on our spiritual state; the entire day is focused on praying and asking the Most High for forgiveness. Historically, on the day of Atonement, the high priest was kept awake during the dark of the night, and he dressed in a white linen garment for the sacrifices of the bull, the ram, and the goat. He would make a sacrifice for himself and Israel. In this book, we will explain the purpose of these sacrifices; what was done with the blood as well as the two goats. We will examine how he was to enter into the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Holy of Holies. We not only discuss what the book of Leviticus has to say about this day, but we will examine the book of Jubilees for those who want to go a bit deeper into the details. This book will explore the order of Melchizedek and explain who is the King and high priest; also, we will see why animal sacrifices are no longer needed today. If you want to see where all these dots are connected, read this book. We encourage you to keep the Day of Atonement and find out for yourself why it is viewed as the Holiest day of the year.

Reagan, President of Lamb & Lion Ministries. “For anyone who has discovered that the Torah is God’s message to mankind, Michael Norten’s fine work will unlock important insights. His careful research will provide the reader with practical and life-enhancing facts about the feasts. He shows how four of the seven feasts are paralleled with past events as seen in the New Testament and how three are to be fulfilled in the future. Well written. —Dr. Stanley D. Toussaint, Senior Professor Emeritus of Biblical Exposition, Dallas Theological Seminary

As Rosh Hashanah ends and you look ahead to Yom Kippur, what do you think about? The familiar melody of Kol Nidre? The long hours of fasting? The days of self-examination? You know that the Day of Atonement is the holiest on the Jewish calendar, but sometimes it just feels long, tiresome and devoid of personal meaning. The readings in this book are for anyone seeking a deeper level of personal reflection and spiritual intimacy—and a clearer understanding of just what makes Yom Kippur so holy. Drawn from a variety of sources—ancient, medieval, modern, Jewish and non-Jewish—this selection of readings, prayers and insights explores the opportunities for inspiration and reflection inherent in the themes addressed on the Day of Atonement: sin, forgiveness, repentance, spiritual growth, and being at one with self, family, community and God. These readings enable you to enter into the spirit of Yom Kippur in a personal and powerful way while they uplift and inform. They will add to the benefits of your High Holy Day experience year after year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five decades prior to his death in 1993, Rabbi Joseph Dov Soloveitchik was the unchallenged leader of modern Orthodox Judaism in the United States. His understanding of both traditional Judaism and secular philosophy shaped two generations of rabbinic students at Yeshiva University, and charted a new course for American Orthodox Jews. In On Repentance, noted scholar Pinchas Peli has gathered the major points of Rabbi Soloveitchik's teachings on teshuvah (repentance), based on the annual series of lectures on the theme of teshuvah, presented on the anniversary of his father's death. For many Jews, these lectures were the major academic and intellectual event of the year. Outside of his followers however, few were able to experience the genius of Rabbi Soloveitchik. He gave his lectures in Yiddish, and generally refused to publish. Now readers can experience the brilliant thinking of this great teacher and sage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “journey of spiritual transformation” (Publishers Weekly) award winning author Rabbi Alan Lew follows the practices and rituals of the Jewish High Holy Days and guides readers through heartbreak, contemplation, and re-birth. There are times in life when we are caught utterly unprepared: a death in the family, the end of a relationship, a health crisis. These are the times when the solid ground we thought we stood on disappears beneath our feet, leaving us reeling and heartbroken, as we stumble back to our faith. The Days of Awe encompass the weeks preceding Rosh Hashanah up to Yom Kippur, a period in which Jews take part in a series of rituals and prayers that reenact the journey of the soul through the world from birth to death. This is a period of contemplation and repentance, comparable to Lent and Ramadan. Yet, for Rabbi Alan Lew, the real purpose of this annual passage is for us to experience brokenheartedness and open our heart to God. In This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared, Lew has marked out a journey of seven distinct stages, one that draws on these rituals to awaken our soul and wholly transform us. Weaving together Torah readings, Buddhist parables, Jewish fables and stories from his own life, Lew lays bare the meanings of this ancient Jewish passage. He reveals the path from terror to acceptance, confusion to clarity, doubt to belief, and from complacency to awe. In the tradition of When Bad Things Happen to Good People, This Is Real And You Are Completely Unprepared enables believers of all faiths to reconnect to their faith with a passion and intimacy that will resonate throughout the year.
