A history of the Nineteenth Maine is a history of the army of the Potomac. A record of your deeds is the record of the patriotic services of the highest type of the Union Volunteers. It was to such as you that was due the final obliteration of the false impression that the northern farmer or mechanic, school teacher or lawyer could not be made the equal of any soldier in the world. You proved your capacity and your personal bravery on every opportunity, at every encounter with your enemies, and you were appreciated and honored by your associates. When, at Gettysburg, July 3rd, 1863, my Brigade was almost overwhelmed, you and the remainder of the Second Division, came to the midst of that fearful struggle and carnage, and made good the resolve, that none of that 15,000 self-confident misguided Corps of Rebels should come within our lines, save as prisoners and without arms. Without earthworks, with silenced batteries, you withstood the final attack as we knew you would, and you joined in the final triumph.
