Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the House and Race of Douglas and Angus The next point we propound to speak of, is their nobility. There is great contest among men who should be most noble; but where will true nobility be found so entire? 'in what sub jett's race is it so full and perfect, according to all the accep tations and significations thereof? They define it to be a lift ia g or raising up above the vulgar: and what name, I pray. Hath been so elevated, and bath so transcended all other, as this of the Douglases.' They add this condition, that it be for true worth; and bath there been any so worthy? Those that will distinguish it into several kinds, make five sorts of it; 1. Nobility of virtue; 2. Of degrees; 8. Of ofiices and employment; 4. Of birth and descent; 5. And lastly, of fame and renown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, Scotland's history is frequently associated with the clarion call of political nationalism. However, in the nineteenth century the influence of history on Scottish national identity was far more ambiguous. How, then, did ideas about the past shape Scottish identity in a period when union with England was all but unquestioned? The activities of the antiquary Cosmo Innes (1798-1874) help us to address this question. Innes was a prolific editor of medieval and early modern documents relating to Scotland's parliament, legal system, burghs, universities, aristocratic families and pre-Reformation church. Yet unlike scholars today, he saw that editorial role in interventionist terms. His source editions were artificial constructs that powerfully articulated his worldview and agendas: emphasising Enlightenment-inspired narratives of social progress and institutional development. At the same time they used manuscript facsimiles and images of medieval architecture to foreground a romantic concern for the texture of past lives. Innes operated within an elite associational culture which gave him access to the leading intellectuals and politicians of the day. His representations of Scottish history therefore had significant influence and were put to work as commentaries on some of the major debates which exorcised Scotland's intelligentsia across the middle decades of the century. This analysis of Innes's work with sources, set within the intellectual context of the time and against the antiquarian activities of his contemporaries, provides a window onto the ways in which the 'national past' was perceived in Scotland during the nineteenth century. This allows us to explore how historical thinkers negotiated the apparent dichotomies between Enlightenment and Romanticism, whilst at the same time enabling a re-examination of prevailing assumptions about Scotland's supposed failure to maintain a viable national consciousness in the later 1800s.
Download or read book James IV written by Norman Macdougall and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James IV is the best-known of all the late medieval Scottish rulers. Widely praised by his contemporaries, he combined the qualities of successful medieval monarch with a wide interest in the arts and sciences, while remaining acutely conscious of the need to enhance the prestige of his dynasty throughout Europe. This excellent study examines all aspects of James IV's sovereignty, explains his popularity and his highly successful kingship and assesses reasons for the disastrous end to the reign when the king and a large population of the Scottish nobility were eliminated in a single afternoon in 1513 at Flodden. This book represents Scottish historical research at its very best. It is meticulously researched and sensitively written.

Book Synopsis The Black Douglases by : Michael Brown
Download or read book The Black Douglases written by Michael Brown and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the century and a half of their power the Black Douglases earned fame as Scotland's champions in the front line of war against England. On their shields they bore the bloody heart of Robert Bruce, the symbol of their claim to be the physical protectors of the hero-king's legacy. But others saw the power of these lords and earls of Douglas in a different light. To their critics the Douglases were a force for disorder in the kingdom, lawless, arrogant and violent, whose power rested on coercion and whose defiance of kings and guardians ultimately provoked James II into slaying the Douglas earl with his own hand. Michael Brown analyses the rise and fall of this family as the dominant magnates of the south, from the deeds of the Good Sir James Douglas in the service of Bruce to the violent destruction of the Douglas earls in the 1450s. Alongside this study of the accumulation and loss of power by one of the great noble houses, The Black Douglases includes a series of thematic examinations of the nature of aristocratic power. In particular these emphasise the link between warfare and political power in southern Scotland during the fourteenth century. For the Black Douglases, war was not just a patriotic duty but the means to power and fame in Scotland and across Europe.
