Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In attempting to write a history of the Baptists no one is more aware of the embarrassments surrounding the subject than the author. These embarrassments arise from many sources. We are far removed from many of the circumstances under survey; the representations of the Baptists were often made by enemies who did not scruple, when such a course suited their purpose, to blacken character; and hence the testimony from such sources must be received with discrimination and much allowance made for many statements; in some instances vigilant and sustained attempts were made to destroy every document relating to these people; the material that remains is scattered through many libraries and archives, in many lands and not always readily accessible; often, on account of persecutions, the Baptists were far more interested in hiding than they were in giving an account of themselves or their whereabouts; they were scattered through many countries, in city and cave, as they could find a place of concealment; and frequently they were called by different names by their enemies, which is confusing. Yet it is a right royal history they have. It is well worth the telling and the preserving.

Book Synopsis Following the Levellers, Volume Two by : Gary S. De Krey
Download or read book Following the Levellers, Volume Two written by Gary S. De Krey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Levellers sought to restructure the state in 1647-9 around popular consent and liberty for conscience, especially in their Agreement of the People. Following the Levellers, Volume Two examines the later political efforts of Leveller spokesmen like John Lilburne, John Wildman, and Richard Overton, and their followers. Far from ending in the 1649 troop revolts, the Leveller impact continued in the Interregnum climacterics of 1653 and 1659-60, times of acute political and religious unsettlement. Indeed, Leveller ideas resurfaced in Restoration political and religious crises in 1678-83 and again in 1687-8 and flourished in populations that once followed the Levellers. Analysis of London, army, and county Levellers reveals connections to subsequent outbursts of unrest. Sectarian communities in London’s peripheral neighbourhoods and nearby counties sustained the Leveller ethos, and ordinary people like those who followed the Levellers remained active in petitioning and protest about political and religious liberties through the Glorious Revolution.

Book Synopsis A History of New England, 2 Volumes by : Isaac Backus
Download or read book A History of New England, 2 Volumes written by Isaac Backus and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historian who has been an actor in the events which he narrates, has peculiar advantages and disadvantages. He can write with more minuteness of detail, and with a fresher and more life-like coloring. He can write with more confidence, and, drawing from his own experience and observation, is in this respect more trustworthy. On the other hand, he is more liable to be warped by prejudice, to see only the excellences and none of the defects of those with whom he has been identified, and only the defects and none of the excellences of those to whom he has been opposed, to be a partizan rather than a judge, and to make his narration little more than the reflection of his personal opinions or his personal sympathy and affection, hostility and spite. The Church History of Isaac Backus has all the above-named excellences. To a large extent he was an eye-witness of that which he describes; and where not an eye-witness, he placed himself in closest possible connection with it by personal acquaintance with the actors, and by immediate and most diligent and thorough examination of records and other evidence. While it may be too much to say that he absolutely avoided the defects above named, yet his sound judgment, his natural candor and honesty and his elevated Christian principle, have made him as nearly free from them as perhaps any author who has written in similar circumstances. --from the Editor's Preface
Book Synopsis Worship and Theology in England, Volume III by : Horton Davies
Download or read book Worship and Theology in England, Volume III written by Horton Davies and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship even more than theology may be the key to a true understanding of the Church's history, for through it people express their interpretation of theology and religion. In this third volume (chronologically) of a planned several-volume series, Professor Davies traces liturgy’s relationship to music, literature, and architecture; studies the effects of philosophical, social, and theological movements (18th century Rationalism, the Oxford Movement, the Evangelical Revival); and describes the techniques of such popular preachers and teachers as Whitefield and Wesley. There are chapters on Anglican, Congregational, Baptist, Presbyterian, Quaker, and Unitarian worship, forming a rich portrait of the varieties of Christian worship in England.
