With its honest and frank accounts of his life, this book provides a unique insight into the mind of a man who was in some ways both remarkable and flawed. As a study of sociology and a true tale of a life twisted from the norm, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in human behavior and the inner workings of the criminal mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prison Life The Legislature of Maryland by joint resolution adjourned to meet in the City of Frederick, September 17th, 1861. The author of this brief narrative of Prison Life in Government prisons was the Reading Clerk of the Maryland Senate. The office which he held clearly indicated his duties. The writer, in common with other citizens of Maryland who were attracted to the temporary capital of the State by the momentous questions to be discussed by the Maryland Legislature, availed himself of what he then believed and still believes to be the unquestioned prerogative of every freeman - the right to express his convictions of public duty. Having this perception of political right, the writer of this did not hesitate freely to exchange opinion with citizens of Frederick and gentlemen from other sections of the State, doubtless drawn there by the magnitude of the questions to be discussed in the Legislature, and upon whose deliberations the destiny of their State was in a measure to be decided. Believing at that time, as he still believes, that the old Union was hopelessly destroyed, the writer, a citizen born, reared and educated in Maryland, necessarily felt some interest in the future political affiliation which his State might form. When, during the summer of 1861, it became manifest from the repeated acts of tyranny on the part of the General Government, that Maryland had ceased to exist as a State, but was considered only a mere province of the Federal Government. The last free Legislature elected by the freemen of the former State of Maryland, through the Committee on Federal Relations, made a Report on the condition of the State, which will be read and admired as long as the English language exists. After they had eloquently and truthfully portrayed, and indignantly protested against the wrongs and outrages heaped upon a brave, spirited, but helpless State, they adjourned to meet on the 17th of September, 1861. In this indispensable work, a brilliant thinker suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul.

Book excerpt: The inspiring, instructive, and ultimately triumphant memoir of a man who used hard work and a Master Plan to turn a life sentence into a second chance. Growing up in a tough Washington, D.C., neighborhood, Chris Wilson was so afraid for his life he wouldn't leave the house without a gun. One night, defending himself, he killed a man. At eighteen, he was sentenced to life in prison with no hope of parole. But what should have been the end of his story became the beginning. Deciding to make something of his life, Chris embarked on a journey of self-improvement--reading, working out, learning languages, even starting a business. He wrote his Master Plan: a list of all he expected to accomplish or acquire. He worked his plan every day for years, and in his mid-thirties he did the impossible: he convinced a judge to reduce his sentence and became a free man. Today Chris is a successful social entrepreneur who employs returning citizens; a mentor; and a public speaker. He is the embodiment of second chances, and this is his unforgettable story.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nine Years Among the Convicts: Or Prison Reminiscences During my Chaplaincy I endeavored to acquaint myself with the history of each individual under my charge, and to mark the various incidents that might be supposed to have aided in the formation of his character. And this I found it easy to do, as the convicts were not allowed to converse with any other person, except in the few words necessary to carry on their work, or an occasional conversation with the Warden or Deputy. There are few persons in whom "secretiveness" is so largely developed as not to wish to divulge to some one. Shut up alone in silence, pondering over their life hour after hour, they long to speak; their secrets become painful and hard to keep, and the pleasant countenance and kind manners of a Chaplain will call them out. Of hundreds I have associated with as pastor, few, very few, seemed to hesitate to speak freely of their past history, and I think most of them truthfully. Of course I shall not betray the confidence thus reposed in me, by spreading upon the pages of this book the history of these men, to their injury, or to the shame or grief of their relatives. It has been my object in writing these pages, 1st. To write only what I believe true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an authoritative, comprehensive account of Victoria’s justice system, starting with a tour of the historic justice precinct which is located on the corner of La Trobe Street and Russell Street, Melbourne. The author takes us back to the earliest days of Victoria’s settlement and introduces the politicians, police, magistrates, and even the criminals who played their parts in Melbourne and Victoria’s development. We are shown how the prison hulks developed into stockades on land, and uncover the philosophy behind the construction of the prisons – many no longer occupied – and the building of courts which were built for conducting trials, both civil and criminal. The book is, in many ways, an insight into an aspect of Victoria’s social history about which little has been written elsewhere. It is a valuable addition to the justice bibliography and even exposes a mystery or two. It took seven years to research and fact check, and includes many photos. All of the author’s proceeds of this book after costs will be donated to Victoria Police Legacy, which looks after families of deceased police officers who have died in the course of their duties.
