Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Southern Methodism on the Pacific Coast I accepted the duty with no high estimate of my ability to meet the demands of the Conference. I had read much of Church Notory, some of it contemporary history, and from personal ob servation I knew it to he an exceedingly diflicult task to be a correct, faithful historian. I knew there were currents of fact not! Thought into which a historian is liable to drift, sometimes unduly magnifying the actions of men, sometimes giving too great prominence to certain events, sometimes overlooking the true heroes and neglecting the record of events best calculated to reveal the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Southern Methodism on the Pacific Coast At the Conference held in Santa Rosa, October, 1877, my brethren of the Pacific Conference, by formal resolution, requested me to prepare the material for a History of Southern Methodism on the Pacific. I was, even then, the only effective member of the Conference who was present at the organization of the body, and who had been intimately and actively connected with it in all of its history. I accepted the duty with no high estimate of my ability to meet the demands of the Conference. I had read much of Church history, some of it contemporary history, and from personal observation I knew it to be an exceedingly difficult task to be a correct, faithful historian. I knew there were currents of fact and thought into which a historian is liable to drift, sometimes unduly magnifying the actions of men, sometimes giving too great prominence to certain events, sometimes overlooking the true heroes and neglecting the record of events best calculated to reveal the truth. Notwithstanding this, at the call of my brethren I undertook the work, and to me it has been "a labor of love." I have lived over again the scenes of other years, and have held communion with the beloved companions whose voices have long since been hushed in death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2007 Saddlebag Selection Award from the Historical Society of The United Methodist Church as “the best book published during the year on the history, biography, polity or theology of United Methodism or its predecessors.” Understanding history rests largely on a grasp of two things: sequence and context. Know which events came earlier and which later, and you’ve gone a long way toward understanding influence and causation. Know what was going on in the wider world at the same time a historical event occurred, and you’ll better grasp the meaning and significance of that event for the people who experienced it. Yet even with the best history textbooks students have difficulty in gaining an immediate sense of sequence and context. Hence the purpose of this book: To lay out the most important events in the history of the Wesleyan/Methodist movement, to show them in their proper order, and to include the most important occurrences taking place on the national and international stages at the same time. Matthews presents his material in an easy to comprehend and visually appealing layout, enumerating the major trends and developments in Methodist history from 1700 to 2004. Rex D. Matthews is Assistant Professor in the Practice of Historical Theology at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. He currently serves as co-chair of the Wesleyan Studies Group of the American Academy of Religion, as General Editor of the Kingswood Books series, and as Managing Editor of the new electronic academic journal Methodist Review. An excerpt from the Circuit Rider review: "This is a book for college and seminary professors, for high school teachers of religion, for Sunday School teachers of children, youth and adults. It is a book for preachers and church musicians. It should be in every church library. This is a book for people who think history is boring as well as for those who delight in rich historical detail and story. It is a book to be savored and returned to again and again. And this is a book for all who love the church and yearn to be part of perfecting its mission and its life." (Click here to read the entire review.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1906 by Rev. Horace Talbert, some fifty years after slavery ended, AME church history comes to life through profiles of 122 men-faithful devotees, or spiritual "sons" of Bishop Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Founded in 1816, the AME church was the first organized African American denomination in the United States. These sterling portraits of the "sons of Allen," mostly AME pastors, but also leading black men from other areas of industry, awaken the dreamer within... In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the AME church, the descendants of the author have reissued this remarkable book, which includes a "Sketch" by Rev. Talbert about his beloved alma mater Wilberforce University. This edition also has new material from Talbert's family members: a preface from Mrs. Suesetta Talbert McCree, a granddaughter of Rev. Talbert, believed to be the last surviving member of her generation; and a foreword by Rev. Malcolm Hassan Stephens, an Itinerant Elder of the AME Church and a great-great grandson of Rev. Talbert. The Sons of Allen is excellent primary source material for those interested in AME Church history, African American history, American history and genealogy. All readers will be inspired by the lives these men set forth to live, encouraged by the AME motto: "God our Father, Christ our redeemer, the Holy Spirit our comforter, Humankind our family."

Book excerpt: This is a study of the transplantation of a creed devised by and for African Americans--the African Methodist Episcopal Church--that was appropriated and transformed in a variety of South African contexts. Focusing on a transatlantic institution like the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the book studies the complex human and intellectual traffic that has bound African American and South African experience. It explores the development and growth of the African Methodist Episcopal Church both in South Africa and America, and the interaction between the two churches. This is a highly innovative work of comparative and religious history. Its linking of the United States and African black religious experiences is unique and makes it appealing to readers interested in religious history and black experience in both the United States and South Africa.

Book excerpt: Interpreting the Great Awakening of the 18th century was in large part the work of Jonathan Edwards, whose writings on the subject defined the revival tradition in America. This text demonstrates how Edwards defended the evangelical experience against overheated zealous and rationalistic critics.
