Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What then is to be done? said Rasselas; the more we inquire, the less we can resolve.' Rasselas and his companions escape the pleasures of the 'happy valley' in order to make their 'choice of life'. By witnessing the misfortunes and miseries of others they may come to understand the nature of happiness, and value it more highly. Their travels and enquiries raise important practical and philosophical questions concerning many aspects of the human condition, including the business of a poet, the stability of reason, the immortality of the soul, and how to find contentment. Johnson's adaptation of the popular oriental tale displays his usual wit and perceptiveness; sceptical and probing, his tale nevertheless suggests that wisdom and self-knowledge need not be entirely beyond reach. This new edition relates the novel to Johnson's life and thought and to politics, society, and the global context of the Seven Years War. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia The lady was Queen Anne, to whom, in compliance with a superstition just dying a natural death, he had been taken by his mother to be touched for the king's evil. The touch was ineflfectual. Perhaps, as Boswell suggested, he ought to have been presented to the genuine heirs of the Stuarts in Rome. Disease and superstition had thus stood by his cradle, and they never quitted him during life. The demon of hypochondria was always lying in wait for him, and could be exorcised for a time only by hard work or social excitement. Of this we shall hear enough; but it may be as well to sum up at once some of the physical characteristics which marked him through life and greatly influenced his-career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia: A Tale Johmon seems to have felt that dramatic writing was not his forte, and he never attempted it afterwards; his next Work was The Rambler, which was commenced in March, 1750, and was continued at the rate of two papers a week until March, 1752. The sale of the work was' at first very inconsiderable, not exceeding five hundmd; and it is a very remarkable circumstance, that the only paper which could be said to be popular, and had a prosperous sale, was one which Johnson did not write. This was No. 97, which was written by Richardson. It has been objected to the Rambler, that the diction is too pompous, and that there is a triteness of sentiment, and a same ness of style and matter; it is, however, a singular instance of fertility of invention, and will always be admired for its advocacy of the principles of religion and morality; the papers on literary criticism are certainly superior to those which represent actual life and manners, for Johnson had studied books more than men. The Rambler, has now, however, taken a permanent place among the first Works of this class, and there are few compositions in which practical Ethics, are treated with more acuteness of observation, dignity of expression, or richness of illustration, than in many of these essays. In 1752, Johnson lost his wife, an aflliction which he felt and spoke of to the end of his life, and although not accustomed or partial to elegant female society, he took into his house as an inmate, Mrs. Ann Williams, the daughter of a physician, who had spent his time and his fortune, in attempting to discover the longitude. The destitute situation of this lady, who was blind, and in poverty, excited the benevolence of John son, who took care that she should not want. Book excerpt: The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia originally titled The Prince of Abissinia: A Tale, though often abbreviated to Rasselas, is an apologue about happiness by Samuel Johnson. The book's original working title was "The Choice of Life". He wrote the piece in only one week to help pay the costs of his mother's funeral, intending to complete it on 22 January 1759 (the eve of his mother's death). The book was first published in April 1759 in England. Johnson is believed to have received a total of 75 for the copyright. The first American edition followed in 1768. The title page of this edition carried a quotation, inserted by the publisher Robert Bell, from La Rochefoucauld: "The labour or Exercise of the Body, freeth Man from the Pains of the Mind; and this constitutes the Happiness of the Poor". Johnson was influenced by the vogue for exotic locations. He had translated A Voyage to Abyssinia by Jernimo Lobo in 1735 and used it as the basis for a "philosophical romance". Ten years prior to writing Rasselas he published The Vanity of Human Wishes in which he describes the inevitable defeat of worldly ambition. Early readers considered Rasselas to be a work of philosophical and practical importance and critics often remark on the difficulty of classifying it as a novel. Johnson was a staunch opponent of slavery, revered by abolitionists, and Rasselas became a name adopted by emancipated slaves. Author Bio: Samuel Johnson(18 September 1709 - 13 December 1784) often referred to as Dr. Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and is described by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". He is also the subject of perhaps the most famous biography in English literature, namely The Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell. Born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, Johnson attended Pembroke College, Oxford for just over a year, before his lack of funds forced him to leave. After working as a teacher, he moved to London, where he began to write for The Gentleman's Magazine. His early works include the biography Life of Mr Richard Savage, the poems London and The Vanity of Human Wishes, and the play Irene. After nine years of work, Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755. It had a far-reaching effect on Modern English and has been described as "one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship". This work brought Johnson popularity and success. Until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary 150 years later, Johnson's was viewed as the pre-eminent British dictionary. His later works included essays, an influential annotated edition of The Plays of William Shakespeare, and the widely read tale The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia. In 1763, he befriended James Boswell, with whom he later travelled to Scotland; Johnson described their travels in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Towards the end of his life, he produced the massive and influential Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, a collection of biographies and evaluations of 17th- and 18th-century poets.
