Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medicine in Its Salient Features IN the Closing days of 1917 I was asked to give a course of lectures on the history of medicine. This book is the outcome of my attempt to comply with the request made at that time. The course of lec tures, given in the first place in the early weeks of 1918, followed the lines of the present table of con tents. My auditors were third-year students in one of the American Schools of Medicine, and the plan of presentation was more or less consciously dictated, at the start, by the recollection of what had Chal lenged my curiosity and aroused my attention about the time I had attained a like standing as a student of medicine. Questions and Class discussions evoked by the lectures in 1918 and the three subsequent years suggested, however, certain modifications of the initial treatment of the subject and indicated in what directions additions and elucidations were most desirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Medicine: From Its Origin to the Nineteenth Century, With an Appendix, Containing a Philosophical and Historical Review of Medicine to the Present Time We see already, by this simple announcement, what Medical Science strives to attain, and how much it merits the attention not only of those who make it a special study, but also of the Philosopher, the Statesman, and whoever appreciates the advantages of good health as well as the influence of the physique on the morale of man. To the historian, Medicine presents itself in three principal phases, viz: as a Profession, as an Art, and as a Science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Medicine Some good foundations have been laid, it is true, in the century previous, and men were at work in the true scientific spirit. Great masters had stimulated their successors to study in the essential preliminary subjects, the constitution and functions of the body. The mighty Boer-haave of Holland (1668-1738) had revolutionized clinical observation; Morgagni of Italy (1682-1771) had "introduced anatomical thinking into medicine" (Virchow), and had done something, the same service for pathology which Haller of Germany (1708-77) did a generation later for physiology; while John Hunter (1728-93) had not only introduced capital improvements into operative surgery, but had set the pace in research into anatomical and physiological problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medicine, Vol. 1: Comprising a Narrative of Its Progress From the Earliest Ages to the Present Time, and of the Delusions Incidental to Its Advance From Empiricism to the Dignity of a Science The purpose of the following pages is to consider the past history, the present state, and the future prospects of the Medical Profession. To record the names and preserve the memory of those whose great achievements have conferred benefit and lustre on their fellow-men, has in all ages been re garded as a duty, and felt as a gratification to wise and reflecting men but whilst endeavouring to relate the principal events which have contributed to make the medical profession what it now is a high and noble calling - it will also be necessary to speak of the prevailing delusions which have been, and still are, practised by the unprincipled, to tempt the unwise and unwary, making largeness of promise a profitable trade, and sinking the profession in name, though not in deed, to a base and degrading craft. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Medicine: From the Earliest Ages to the Commencement of the Nineteenth Century The history of the progressive steps in the development of medicine, embraced in these pages, is an embodiment of the course of lectures delivered by my father at the University of Virginia many years since. The arduous duties devolved upon him in that institution covered a much more comprehensive field than would be possible or practicable at the present day. The labor now usually allotted to almost an entire faculty of professors was there assigned to him alone; for, according to the terms of his appointment, he was expected "to teach to the best of his ability, and with due diligence, Anatomy, Surgery, The History of the Progress and Theories of Medicine, Physiology, Materia Medica, and Pharmacy." Such an aggregation of branches of instruction must have severely taxed the energies, while it doubtless stimulated the ambition, of the then young professor. It seemed to be the desire of Thomas Jefferson, at that time Rector of the University, and of those associated with that illustrious personage in its government, that the student should learn something of the earlier progress of the science and the art, while he was at the same time pursuing a course of instruction in the usual technical details of a collegiate medical education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Features of Modern Medicine AN appointment to the lectureship founded by an appro ciative and generous patron of science, the late Morris K. J esup, Esq., has given me an Opportunity to present some of the striking features of modern medicine which illustrate its genuinely scientific character, its great change from the medi cine of the past, and its hopeful outlook for the future. Obviously no attempt could here be made to survey its whole field; but I have endeavored, through a consideration of selected topics, to depict its spirit. Human beings may be divided into those who do, and those who do not, believe in the efficiency of medicine. The relative number of non believers has always been small, and is doubtless much less now than in the days of the Greeks and of Moliere, but their sentiments have ever been loudly proclaimed. It is hoped that these pages may be read by both classes. They may perchance help to fortify the believers, and, if not actually to convert the dissenters, at least to make their doubts appear less rational. The labors of a learned profession can easily be belittled by those who are less learned. I shall be gratified if what I have here written shall be instrumental in inducing laymen to study the human body and appreciate what men of medicine are now doing to maintain health and to prevent, diagnose, treat, and cure disease. When laymen do this, the influence of medical cults and healing sects is sure to decline. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
