Book excerpt: A historical look at the illustrious Marine Corps Marksmanship teams Major Barde's extensively researched and footnoted book is considered the definitive text on the history of the US Marine Corps shooting programs. This detailed examination of the era from 1901 thru 1962 covers all of the most famous matches, both U.S. and internationally-based. You'll learn about the most famous marksmen of each era and how they contributed to the Marines' legacy as the winningest service branch in U.S. competitive shooting. A must-have edition for any Marine Corps shooting competitor or those with an interest in American shooting competition history. • U.S. and International matches • Olympics participation • Vintage shooting positions • Team-based competition • Automatic weapon markmanship • The Krag, Springfield, and Garand in competition • Equipment tricks and maintainance • Amusing stories and anecdotes Numerous appendices give information on the most coveted awards and trophies, such as the Lauchheimer, Elliot Trophy, Lloyd Trophy, San Diego Trophy, The Holcomb, Edson and many more. Generously illustrated with historical photos from every era. This edition features a new Foreword by former Marine Shooting team competitor/coach MSgt Jim Owens. It is in this historical record you will find many clues to the US Marines eternal emphasis on rifle marksmanship as a key tenet of their organization. Commandant Gen. David M. Shoup said it best in his Preface to this book: "The triumphs and the defeats at Camp Perry, Wakefield, and Sea Girt played a fundamental part in the training and molding of combat Marines. The firing lines of these famous ranges produced shooters and techniques that augured well the successful battles of France, Nicaragua, Haiti, the Pacific Isles and Korea."

Book excerpt: Featuring hundreds of black-and-white illustrations of marksmanship medals, prizes, and badges, plus a special full-color section, this encyclopedia of U.S. Army shooting awards and training program rewards is a must-have for military historians and collectors. In Marksmanship in the U.S. Army, William K. Emerson details weapons training from the 1850s to the present, gathering this information for the first time in a single volume. Emerson highlights the philosophies behind army marksmanship and documents the awards, prizes, and badges bestowed upon the War Department’s most elite shooters, artillerymen, and swordsmen. Proficiency training discussed in this book includes the use of sabers, cannons, sea mines, bayonets, tank weapons, aerial gunnery, bombs, and other weapons. Emerson integrates discussion of the criteria, people, and rationale behind each award into this historical account. Emerson’s emphasis on national rifle and pistol matches, the history of selected army and NRA trophies, and significant players in the army’s weapons training development enhances the comprehensive appeal of the latest contribution to military history by this experienced author.

A shooter who participates in a Division Match, while recognized as a proficient shooter, has also been selected to become a representative and participant in the Marine Corps Competition in Arms Program (CIAP). Throughout its history, this program and the events conducted within the program all stress the same principles: the development of proficient and combat-ready Marines through the practice and application of marksmanship fundamentals and shooting techniques. Success in requalification, combat, and competition rely on the shooter's ability to apply what he has learned in these environments. The competitive shooter's goal over the coming weeks will ultimately be to win the match, but the skills and knowledge that he receives will serve him and his fellow Marines long after the competition ends and the medals are awarded. The CIAP's mission to develop and perpetuate effective shooters is the foundation on which each shooter in the Marine Corps may achieve success. 2. OVERVIEW. This lesson will cover an introduction to the CIAP to include history, traditions, objectives, scope, structure, quotas, and awards. 3. INTRODUCE LEARNING OBJECTIVES. The Division Match instruction is structured to prepare the shooter to fire the Division Match Course and is not a component of a formal school program. Therefore, there are no learning objectives. 4. METHOD. This lesson will be taught in a classroom setting using lecture. 5. EVALUATION. The Division Match instruction is structured to prepare the shooter to fire the Division Match Course and is not a component of a formal school program. Book excerpt: All Marines share a common warfighting belief: "Every Marine a rifleman." This simple credo reinforces the belief that all Marines are forged from a common experience, share a common set of values, and are trained as members of an expeditionary force in readiness. As such, there are no "rear area" Marines, and no one is very far from the fighting during expeditionary operations. The Marine rifleman of the next conflict will be as in past conflicts: among the first to confront the enemy and the last to hang his weapon in the rack after the conflict is won. Rifle Marksmanship, a Marine Corps Reference Publication, provides techniques and procedures for Marine Corps rifle marksmanship. Every Marine is first and foremost a rifleman. Rifle Marksmanship reflects this ethos and the Marine Corps' warfighting philosophy. This publication discusses the individual skills required for effective rifle marksmanship and standardizes the techniques and procedures used throughout the Marine Corps. It constitutes the doctrinal basis for all entry-level and sustainment-level rifle marksmanship training.
