Book excerpt: Originally published 1974. Thousands of elementary schools for the children of the poor were founded during the nineteenth century, yet there is scarcely a published history of a single one of them. This volume is precisely such a history and the authors trace its story against the background of local and national change in education and society. On the basis of a unique collection of records the authors have pieced together a picture of the social composition of the school, its curriculum and teaching methods, and its administration and finance. They relate the history of the school to that of London and the church, to that of educational authorities and educational policy.

In this historical handbook, author, journalist and London guide Terence Jenkins hopes that the tales of England’s capital city will inspire readers to explore this unique part of our country. It is a place rich in history and known for its extensive culture. Following the success of Another Man’s London, he gives us an idiosyncratic look in bite-sized chunks of London’s exciting history that are fascinating and easy to read. Amongst other characters you will meet Bulbous Betty and the Black Prince who had a surprising effect on the course of London’s history. Discover why 100 shrouds were requested and what really happened to that polar bear in Piccadilly… Find out who was exiled in SE19, and what was all the fuss about a fig leaf? The book was written to follow Jenkins' trilogy of London books, Another Man’s London, London Livesand London Tales, and also as a return to the city following his explorative book Further Afield. Not just an entertaining read but also an educational pocket guide, Return to London covers some of the unique facts about London’s history that have largely remained unknown.

Book excerpt: Projecting forward in time from the processes of design and construction that are so often the focus of architectural discourse, Consuming Architecture examines the variety of ways in which buildings are consumed after they have been produced, focusing in particular on processes of occupation, appropriation and interpretation. Drawing on contributions by architects, historians, anthropologists, literary critics, artists, film-makers, photographers and journalists, it shows how the consumption of architecture is a dynamic and creative act that involves the creation and negotiation of meanings and values by different stakeholders and that can be expressed in different voices. In so doing, it challenges ideas of what constitutes architecture, architectural discourse and architectural education, how we understand and think about it, and who can claim ownership of it. Consuming Architecture is aimed at students in architectural education and will also be of interest to students and researchers from disciplines that deal with architecture in terms of consumption and material culture.

Its population mainly unemployed, were either sick or poverty stricken, desperately in need of both spiritual and medical care. In 1892. A certain Catholic priest. Father. William Francis Brown arrived in Vauxhall. His purpose to start a Catholic Mission to the poor and needy of Vauxhall. Against all odds he built, a school, then his Church, in doing so he created his Parish. His next aim was to establish his Settlement, he purchased a Hall and four houses, during which time Father. Brown was introduced to a Nurse, who had been trained in Midwifery, and Child Welfare, with a character similar to his own and spirit of determination to succeed in administering medical help to the sick and needy. Her name was Miss Grace Gordon Smith. Between them they formed a partnership to provide the spiritual and medical treatment for the poor and needy of his Parish. In 1924, Father Brown was Consecrated a Bishop. Bishop of Pella. His alliance with Grace continued and between them they established an order of Nuns and created the Dames of St. Joan, to forge the way for a service, years ahead of the future National Health Service. In 1935 saw the opening of his Settlement, which included a Youth Club for the boys and girls of his school and those outside his Parish. During the Second World War although bombed twice. The Settlement carried on administering medical care, and the Youth Club never closed. In 1944 Bishop Brown purchased a house in Ashstead Surrey, as a Hostel for the Youth of London to spend a week-end or week, away from the bombings of London. Affectionately known to all members of the Youth Club as: ‘The Bish’ and as ‘Old Pella’ to all the people of South London. His good work was recognised by the Municipal Authorities of Lambeth who named a block of flats in the Lambeth walk. ‘Pella House’. This story is the history of one man’s dream that came to fruition in the establishment of St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Settlement-Youth and Pella Club, from its founding in 1892 to the present day.
