Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE HISTORY OF FREEMASONRY ITS LEGENDS AND TRADITIONS ITS CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY BY ALBERT GALLATIN MACKEY, M.D., 33 Volume 2 of 7. Other volumes also available. SO comprehensive a title as the one selected for the present work would be a vain assumption if the author's object was not really to embrace in a series of studies the whole cycle of Masonic history and science. Anything short of this would not entitle the work to be called THE HISTORY OF FREEMASONRY. Freemasonry as a society of long standing, has of course its history, and the age of the institution has necessarily led to the mixing in this history of authentic facts and of mere traditions or legends. We are thus led in the very beginning of our labors to divide our historical studies into two classes. The one embraces the Legendary History of Freemasonry, and the other its authentic annals. The Legendary History of Freemasonry will constitute the subject of the first of the five parts into which this work is divided. It embraces all that narrative of the rise and progress of the institution, which beginning with the connection with it of the antediluvian patriarchs, ends in ascribing its modern condition to the patronage of Prince Edwin and the assembly at York. This narrative, which in the I5th and up to the end of the I7th century, claimed and received the implicit faith of the Craft, which in the I8th century was repeated and emendated by the leading writers of the institution, and which even in the 19th century has had its advocates among the learned and its credence among the unlearned of the Craft, has only recently and by a new school been placed in its true position of an apocryphal story. And yet though apocryphal, this traditionary story of Freemasonry which has been called the Legend of the Craft, or by some the Legend of the Guild, is not to be rejected as an idle fable. On the contrary, the object of the present work has been to show that these Masonic legends contain the germs of an historical, mingled often with a symbolic, idea, and that divested of certain evanescences in the shape of anachronisms, or of unauthenticated statements, these Masonic legends often, nay almost always, present in their simple form a true philosophic spirit.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO THE ANGLO-SAXON GILDS GILD signified among the Saxons a fraternity or sodality or brotherhood united together for the accomplishment by the co-operative exertions of the members of some predetermined purpose. The word is derived from the AngloSaxon verb gildan, "to pay," and refers to the fact that every member of the Gild was required to give something to its support. Hence Cowel defines Gilds to be "fraternities originally contributing sums towards a common stock." Assuming that the characteristic of a Gild organization is that it is a society of men united together for mutual assistance in the gaining of an object, or for the cultivation of friendship, or for the observance of religious duties, we may say that the Gild has under some of these aspects existed in all civilized countries from the earliest ages. The priesthood of Egypt was a fraternity containing in its organization much that resembles the more modern Gild, the priests possessing peculiar privileges and forming a body separated from the rest of the nation, by the right of making their own laws and electing their own members, who were received into what may be appropriately called the sacerdotal Gild, by certain ceremonies of initiation. The trades and handicrafts were divided into their various professions. Thus the artificers and the boatmen of the Nile were each a separate class,1 and as the practice of a trade was made hereditary, being handed down from father to son, and was restricted to certain families, we may well suppose that each of these classes made up a Gild. We may remark, in passing, that while the handicraftsmen and traders were generally held by the higher orders among the Egyptians in low repute, 1Thomas Kenreck, "Ancient Egypt, under...

His son, commonly called the Chev alier St. George, does not appear to have actively prosecuted his claims to the throne beyond the attempted invasion of England in 1715. He afterward retired to Rome, where the remainder of his life was passed in the quiet observation of religious duties. Nor is there any satisfactory evidence that he was in any way connected. For the first time ever, in our long history, we have been unable to meet. We have taken part in a dangerous and compulsory experiment, For the first time in our long history we have had to submit Our Craft to life support by placing it in an artificially induced coma and keeping its life breath of meetings flowing by using the artificial ventilator of the video get-together. With the advent of vaccines, we are faced with the risky business of arousing this slumbering giant. Because of the losses by death, resignation, and decline of interest, there is a real danger that the habit of monthly Masonry in our lodges will crumble and fail. We need to do something, but what? This book explores the options for a return to a new reality.

Mackey appears as author of this " Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and its Kindred Sciences," which, being a library in inself, superseded most of the Masonic works which have been tolerated by the craft — chiefly because none better could be obtained. Here is a work which fulfils the hope which sustained the author through ten years' literary labor, that, under one cover he "would furnish every Mason who might consult its pages the means of acquiring a knowledge of all matters connected with the science, the philosophy, and the history of his order." Up to the present time the modern literature of Freemasonry has been diffuse, lumbering, unreliable, and, out of all reasonable proportions. There is, in Mackey's "Encyclopaedia of Masonry," well digested, well arranged, and confined within reasonable limits, all that a Mason can desire to find in a book exclusively devoted to the history, the arts, science, and literature of Masonry. This is volume two out of four and covering the letters D to L.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Freemasonry, Vol. 2: Its Antiquities, Symbols, Constitutions, Customs, Etc; Embracing an Investigation of the Records of the Organisations of the Fraternity in England, Scotland, Ireland, British Colonies, France, Germany, and the United States The common belief in Wren's membership of the Society of Freemasons rests upon two sources of authority. Historically, the general impression derives what weight it may possess from the importance that is attached to an obscure passage in Aubrey's Natural History of Wiltshire, and traditionally (or masonically) the acceptance of the legend, and its devolution from an article of faith into a matter of conviction, is dependent upon our yielding full credence to statements in Dr Anderson's Constitutions of a.d. 1738, which are quite irreconcilable with those in his earlier publication of 1723. The Natural History of Wiltshire, originally commenced in 1656, and of which the last chapter was written on April 21, 1686, was the author's first literary essay. He subsequently made some additions, but none Of a later date than 1691. In 1675 it was submitted to the Royal Society; sub sequently Dr Plot 2 - curator of the Ashmolean Museum, and author of the Natural History of Stafi'ordshire - was requested by Aubrey to prepare it for the press. This, however, he declined to do, but strongly urged the writer to finish and publish it himself. The work remained in ms. Until 1847, when it was first printed, under the editorial supervision of John Britten.3 The original ms. Was never removed from Oxford, but a fair copy was made by the author and presented to the Royal Society. Of the Oxford ms., Britten says, Being compiled at various times, during a long series of years, it has a confused appearance from the numerous corrections and additions made in it by Aubrey. The same authority continues - SO far as Aubrey's own labours are concerned, the Royal Society's copy is the most perfect; but the notes of Ray, Evelyn, and Tanner were written upon the Oxford ms.
