The success of the mining industries and the prosperity of the country have depended upon the efforts and skills of low-paid black workers. They have determined the scope of mining and the technological quality of its operations. It was essentially their sacrifices which made it possible for the mining houses to earn massive profits. The impressive and glamorous infra-structure of South African society which is reflected in the spacious homes of the whites, equipped with swimming pools and saunas, and guarded and serviced by blacks, is derived from those profits. Yet, apart from occasional references to them as 'tribal natives' or 'migrant workers', nameless and without identities except as numbers, black mineworkers have been largely excluded from from the history of South Africa. They have not even been credited with a history of their own.

The title “Mantua Humanistic Studies” reminds us to a historical town in northern Italy, Mantua, that had been for a long time the capital of one of the most powerful and culturally influencing dynasties of the Renaissance: the Gonzaga family. Mantua has an extraordinary richness in terms of history, arts, and tradition of studies, and is now one of the main Unesco Heritage sites. Among the artists who have left their masterworks in the city, we can find Pisanello, Andrea Mantegna, Leon Battista Alberti, Giulio Romano, Rubens, Titian, and many others. Even if in the time of the Gonzagas the city had a strong history of humanistic studies, mainly established by the great teacher Vittorino Da Feltre, during the following centuries Mantua gradually lost great part of its cultural influence, especially after the end of the leading dynasty at the beginning of the 18th Century. Maybe the only real exception was the renowned “Accademia Nazionale Virgiliana”. Nevertheless, in very recent years some Italian Academic Institutions and Universities have rediscovered the cultural importance of the town, and they moved here with some of their Bachelor and Master degrees: the Politecnico of Milano, the University of Verona and, in 2018, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. More and more students are moving into our old city every year, and the future could really be bright in the terms of culture, teaching, and research. “Mantua Humanistic Studies” would like to be a small – but maybe not useless – contribution to what could be a “second Renaissance” for the capital of the Gonzagas, offered by a small but active Scientific Publishing House which was born and still operates in this small but incredible town.

Along with ongoing mining, major investments in astronomy (notably the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope), in renewable and non-renewable sources of energy (solar, wind, potential shale-gas mining), in biodiversity conservation and commercial game farming are reshaping land use and authority in this vast and long-marginalised area. While promising significant benefits to society at large, these developments are built on older histories of dispossession and extractivism – histories that many Karoo residents fear are being reproduced in new forms today. Collectively these dynamics place this unique region at the centre of national and global concerns around climate change, the politics of knowledge production, the conservation of threatened biodiversity, and the meaning and possibility of sustainable development. These issues are explored through a series of case studies of selected developments, complemented by chapters providing more historical context and general overviews. While challenging perceptions of this region as a peripheral wasteland, this collection raises conceptual and policy questions that resonate far beyond the Karoo itself. It also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in research aimed not only at understanding but also at responding appropriately to the mounting challenges of our time.
