These statements refer to art under the Romans at the time of the republic. Those relating to it between the point at which I here stop and the fall of Roman freedom will be found in the second part, because they are more intermixed with Greek history. They have this value at least that, if any one should wish to pursue them more at length, they will save him a portion of the labor which is occasioned by reading the ancient authors with so much care and with reference to the succession of events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture, Vol. 2 of 2 IT may be that an acquaintance with the personality of an artist, does not promote in the end a true judgment of his work. But we cannot deny that it has often furnished the pages of the historian with charm and vivacity. The History of Greek Sculpture presents no such opportunity. It has no Lives to beguile the student along an arduous path. Only here and there an incident, handed down on mostly a dubious authority, breaks the narrative of work done and the examination of what remains of it to our day. The sculptors of ancient Greece seem to have lost themselves in their art, and this might have been a less misfortune for us, if it also had not since their time disappeared in a great measure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Art, Vol. 1 of 2 The increased interest shown in works of sculpture and painting during the last twenty years may be perceived by various favourable symptoms. This interest is not merely shown by delight in beauty of form, but it is combined with that deeper attraction towards historical knowledge which pervades our time. After Kugler, in his 'Handbook to Art History, ' had for the first time traversed the whole grand field of art, and represented it in distinct outline, and Schnaase, in his 'History of the Plastic Arts, ' had profoundly investigated and cleverly displayed the connection of artistic creations with the innermost life of nations and epochs, the desire for acquaintance with this historical progress of the arts was awakened in cultivated circles, and at the same time the conviction gained ground that the enjoyment of a work of art was materially increased by the understanding of its historical existence. In the meanwhile, inquiry extended over all branches and epochs of the history of art, and such an amount of facts were brought out of darkness and oblivion, that even those who took active interest in the matter were dazzled by the infinity of the material. The scientific works on art history necessarily increased in extent, as from year to year there appeared a growing accumulation of material. A comparison of the third edition of Kugler's 'Handbook, ' with the first is at once an evidence of this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 of 2 The work here offered to the public, conceived and commenced in the year 1876, was designed to supply what seemed a crying need of English literature - viz., an account of Ancient Egypt, combining its antiquities with its history, addressed partly to the eye, and pre senting to the reader, within a reasonable compass, the chief points of Egyptian life - manners, customs, art, science, literature, religion - together with a tolerably full statement of the general course of historical events, whereof Egypt was the scene, from the foundation of the monarchy to the loss of independence. Existing English histories of Ancient Egypt were either slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Considering the ancient Iberia, the present Spanish peninsula, as the farthest land west that was known' to the ancients, and Serica, as that the farthest east, we should find Greece almost directly in the centre of the most cultivated countries of the three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa. TO him, more than to any other authority, would he have acknowledged his indebtedness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Art Outlines, Vol. 1: Ancient Art A word of explanation is perhaps needed in publishing these Outlines Of the History of Art. My purpose is twofold, to facilitate the work Of my own classes by putting into their hands in printed form the analysis of their daily lessons, and a desire to meet the needs of others who, either alone or under guidance, may wish to pursue a systematic study of the subject. That there is need of such an outlined course has been made evident from requests, which come to me not infrequently, for suggestions and advice as to what to read and how to study the history Of art. As the General Analysis shows, the course is planned to cover two years, but to include' In the first year - for the benefit of those unable to take the second year - the two greatest and most important periods of art the world has as yet known, I. E., Greek Sculpture and Italian Painting. The second year's course is purposely left flexible that it may be adapted to the needs of each class. The Outlines of Parts I and II are substantially the analyses of the work given from day to day to my own classes for the last ten years, with such additions and modifications as more recent researches and excavations have from time to time made necessary. NO monument is included, I believe, that is not illustrated in class either by stereopticon, photograph or other reproduction where such exists, or by literary references and descriptions where such are our only sources of information. The bibliographies are intended as guides to books most readily accessible and may easily be supplemented from fuller bibliographies given in many of those named. The books placed in the hands of the class for the two terms' work here outlined are Tarbell's Greek Art and Gardner's Greek Sculpture upon which the analysis of the Introduction to Greek Sculpture (part II, C. I.) is largely based. In part II references are given to these handbooks wherever the different plan of this analysis has seemed to make it desirable. Whatever claim to originality can be made for the Outlines is in the choice and arrangement of material and in the emphasis placed upon certain periods as compared with others, the aim being to keep throughout a proper perspective and to trace the development of art in the periods of promise in such a way as to gain a deeper appreciation of the really beautiful and noble works in the age Of achievement.
