Leading figure in public life for many years, and was by training eminently equipped for the great office. James Madison as a framer of the Constitution had done more than any other man in making that instrument what it is; he had been a leader in Congress under Washington, and had now just completed his eight years as chief in the Cabinet of Jefferson. Cer tainly he knew the inner workings of the government as few could know them. Moreover, next to his retiring chief, Madison was the ablest man in the country, save one, Albert Gallatin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 3: From the Discovery of the Continent The hereditary right of the other members of the house of lords was such a privilege as must, in itself, always be hateful to a free people, and always be in danger; but as yet there was no struggle to be rid of it. The reverence for its antiquity was enhanced by pleasing historical associations. But for the aid of the barons, Magma Charta would not have been attained; and, but for the nobility and gentry, the revolution of 1688 would not have succeeded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States of America, Vol. 3 of 5: A Pictorial History of the American Nation From the Earliest Discoveries and Settlements to the Present Time Dr. Harris has in a few sentences brought together the more important points in Revolutionary History which it is desirable for every student to bear in mind. And Dr. Harris has shown admirably well how desirable it is that a young American should be acquainted, even in some detail, with the great passages of the history of his country. The history of what we wisely call "The Revolution" differs from any other passage of written history, not simply in the greatness of the future depending upon that struggle, but in the character of the struggle itself. The points which became important at one time or another were as far apart as Quebec on the North and Florida on the South, while the range of military operations westward went as far as the distance from the ocean to the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes of the Northwest. In this immense region for seven years of actual warfare, and for ten years preceding that warfare, there were operations going forward, all more or less important, which come particularly into the larger history of the time. It is, therefore, very seldom that any passage of history, however important, is to be studied from so many different points of view. In conducting this study, the young American reader has some points of great advantage, and there are some lines of distinct disadvantage, when one compares his study with that of any other period of fifteen or twenty years. It seems desirable to consider this peculiarity of the study before one goes into a careful narrative of events between 1762 and 1783. The first of the difficulties which attend the study of this twenty years is well stated by President John Adams in one of his journals, written before he dreamed of the great future which was before him. He says substantially, that when we examine some written diary of the past it almost always appears that men write careful diaries when they have nothing else to do, but that when they are eagerly occupied in every hour of every day, they have no time to keep up their diaries. This has proved pathetically true in the history of the Thirteen States and of the War with England as the great events of the Revolution went forward. Literally, there were almost no professional soldiers engaged on the American side of the great struggle. General Washington, in one of his early despatches, says that in the whole of his army at the place where he wrote there were not two men who had ever seen more than two regiments of troops on parade or in line of battle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 3: Under the Constitution In imitation of Washington, Monroe, soon after his in auguration, made an extended tour northward. Its results were remarkable in re establishing that fraternal Spirit which he had pledged himself to restore, and in binding together once more States friendly and States disaffected to the cause of the Union during the late war. The state of Monroe's health, which needed relaxation, favored such a journey; so, too, the desire to gain personal information; nor had the invitation of Otis and his Boston associates been But the immediate occasion of the tour was to inspect and draw public attention to the new system of coast fortifications, which, with the sanction of the late Congress, was progressing under the capable direction of General Ber nard, a French officer, who brought letters from Lafayette, and remained until the work was in substance completed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pictorial History of the United States of America, Vol. 3 of 4: From the Discovery by the Northmen in the Tenth Century to the Present Time In the battle of Brandywine, the Americans lost about three hundred killed and six hundred wounded, of whom four hundred were taken prisoners. Howe stated his loss at five hundred killed and wounded; but it was probably greater. In the battle, several foreign officers of distinction served in the American army; amongst these was La Fayette, who now first served in the American cause. He received a wound in the leg, but continued in the field, encouraging the troops to the end of the action. Several other French officers were in the battle on the same side, and also Count Pulaski, a Polish nobleman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Country, Vol. 3 of 6: A Household History of the United States for All Readers, From the Discovery of America to the Present Time Ludlow found Boston quiet but firm. Gage had arrived from New York by sea, attended only by his staff, though he had taken the precaution to order additional regiments to Massachusetts. He had remained a few days at the Castle, in conference with Hutchinson; and he had landed at the Long Wharf on the i7th of May, without any military display. There he was courteously received as their governor by a large crowd of citizens, and was escorted to the state-house by a militia company under John Hancock, where a loyal address was presented to him, and where he read his commission. After that he was entertained at a public dinner in Faneuil Hall. He believed that an era of reconciliation through submission was at hand. That night an effigy of Hutchinson was burned in front of Hancock's house, and the new governor was somewhat disturbed by grave doubts.
