Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland and Scotland, Vol. 12 No effort has been spared to secure truthfulness and accuracy of statement; the utmost care has been taken throughout to consult and compare original authorities; and nothing has been accepted on second-hand evidence. It may not be unnecessary to say that, except in the few places where I quote, the narrative all through this book is original, and not made up by adapting or copying the texts of other modern Irish histories. For good or for bad I preferred my own way of telling the story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, Ireland and Scotland The lines upon which the government has developed to its present constitutional form are chiefly lines of resistance to Oppressive enactments in these two matters. The dynastic and military history of England, although picturesque and interesting, is really only a narrative of the external causes which have impeded the nation's growth toward its ideal of the greatest possible good to the greatest possible num ber. The historic development of Ireland and Scotland, and the events which have brought these two countries into organic union with England are, of necessity, very briefly related. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scotch-Irish or the Scot in North Britain, North Ireland, and North America, Vol. 1 Hese volumes are designed to serve as an introduction to a series of Historical Collections which the writer expects hereafter to publish, relating to the early scotch-irish settlements in America. They are not in tended as a history of the scotch-irish people, for such a work would require more time and labor than have been expended upon the present undertaking. The subject is one, like that of the history of America itself, which must wait for some future gifted historian; but unlike the subject of American history in general, it is also one concerning which no comprehensive treat ment has ever been attempted. Such being the case, in order to enable the reader to understand the relation of the scotch-irish to American history, it has seemed necessary to make a brief general survey of the origin and old-world history of the race to which the scotch-irish belong. In doing this, it has not been his purpose to attempt even an outline sketch of the history of Scotland, but merely to condense and connect the record of its most important events, and indicate some of the principal writers upon different aspects of its history. The fact is, that the lack of acquaintance of many native-born Americans with the details of Scottish history is such that they require an elemen tary grounding even in the annals of its most noteworthy events. Such a primer the writer has undertaken to prepare. In doing so, he has found it advisable to compile, epitomize, and consolidate a number of the most compact of the sketches of Scottish history which have appeared in Great Britain, using for this purpose the writings of William F. Skene and of E. William Robertson, the Annals of Lord Hailes, the brief history of Mack intosh and, for the topographical and ethnographical description of Scot land of the present day, the works of the French geographer and traveller, J. J. E. Reclus, of which an edition in English has been published by Messrs. D. Appleton Company. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There were settlements of clerics in fortified villages; the clerics were a kind of monks, with more regard for abbots than for their many bishops, and with peculiar tonsures, and a peculiar way of reckon ing the date of Easter. Each missionary was popularly called a Saint, and the Kil, or cell, of many a Celtic missionary survives in hundreds of place-names. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cabinet History of England, Scotland, and Ireland, Vol. 1: England The following volume is a part of an experiment to ascertain how far the most necessary portions of historical knowledge may, even in an abridged nar rative, be rendered acceptable to general readers. Neither my habitual relish for English history, nor the hazardous honor of acting with such fellow laborers, has blinded me to the difficulties of the attempt, which experience has shown to be more considerable than I apprehended they would prove. I need not compare the convenience of abridgment with the merits of circumstantial recital: both these sorts of historical composition have their use, and they must both always continue to be written. On behalf of such sketches, I may venture to take it, for granted that an outline may be useful as an introduction, and convenient as a remembrancer; that it is a particularly accessible manual for refer ence; and that it may contain all the information concerning the affairs of one people, which men of different pursuits, of little leisure, or of other coun tries, may think it necessary to have always within their reach. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 The Author was invited to undertake this general Sketch of Scottish History in connection with a similar abridgment of English History by Sir James Mackin tosh, and a History of Ireland by Thomas Moore, Esquire. There are few literary persons who would not have been willing to incur much labor and risk of reputation for the privilege of publishing in such society. On the present occasion, the task, though perhaps still a rash one, was rendered more easy by the Author having so lately been employed on the volumes called Tales of a Grandfather, transferred from the History of Scotland, for the benefit of a young relation. Yet the object and tenor of these two works are extremely different. In the Tales taken from Scottish history, the author, throwing into the shade, or rather omitting all that could embarrass the under standing or tire the attention of his juvenile reader, was desirous only to lay before him what was best adapted to interest his imagination, and confining himself to facts, to postpone to a later period an investigation of the principles out of which those facts arose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotch and Irish Seeds in American Soil: The Early History of the Scotch and Irish Churches, and Their Relations to the Presbyterian Church of America If, then, we would understand how valuable was the contribution that Scotland and Ireland made to the Presbyterianism of this country, we must consider the previous religious condition of each, and the influences, favorable or otherwise, under which the religious life of the people was developed. In this way we can see how these future colonists were educated and disciplined in the Old World for the great work God in his providence had for them _to do in the New. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Contrasted With Scotland: Being the Substance of an Address Delivered Before the Belfast History Society Let us hope, then, that the regeneration of Ireland will no longer be retarded by efforts, hopeless as they must ever be, to induce the co-operation of this party in the good work. Let him who wishes to live in the hearts of the Irish people, as their benefactor and friend, look to the results of its tyranny - to the denunciations of every measure of wise and liberal policy - to the assumption of exclusive loyalty, and the most unmeasured abuse of all that loyalty teaches us to reapect, in the same breath. Let him observe the avidity with which, on every occasion, the oppression of the people is sought for; let him look to these, and all the other consequences of the usurpa tion of a faction over the executive, and determine his choice. The friend to Ireland must be the foe to party; if he cling to the one, he must at once and for ever cast off the other. The blow which, in a great degree, destroyed the open and avowed ascendancy of the Orange party was the more aflicting in this, that it was in some measure suicidal. This, to them, irreparable calamity was the restoration of civil and religious liberty to the Catholics of Ireland, by the very men, too, whose pride exulted in the consistency of a long and vigorous opposition to the measure which the voice of a united people compelled them reluctantly to concede. The plan of this and the subsequent volumes of the series includes a certain amount of geo graphical and historical matter, which may not be as accept able to the young reader as exciting incidents of personal adventure; but it is hoped there will be enough of the latter to season the former, and render the useful and valuable palatable to the reader.
