From shore whaling, fishing, and boatbuilding to sailing, salt making, and other maritime pursuits, almost everyone dealt with the ocean. A 160-acre Indian reservation existed until a smallpox epidemic in the 1770s. Later, a substantial Friends community (Quakers) grew in South Yarmouth. Yarmouth slowly leaned toward tourism after the Civil War, with railroads providing the transportation. Automobiles created even more tourism. People no longer stayed for the summer but could now spend just a night or two. Restaurants, dance halls, and cabins changed the landscape. There was little growth during the Depression; however, it was explosive in the years following World War II. Townspeople grudgingly adapted to these changes. The one constant has been the Bass River and its influence on the town.

Book Synopsis Legendary Locals of Yarmouth by : John A. Basile
Download or read book Legendary Locals of Yarmouth written by John A. Basile and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With roots as deep as the earliest years of the American colonies, Yarmouth has a long and colorful history that is still being written. When Stephen Hopkins built his home with permission from the court of Plymouth Colony, Yarmouth was already home to native peoples. Bounded on its north and south sides by the Atlantic Ocean, it is no surprise that ship captains, salt makers, and merchants are part of the towns early history. Later, artists, writers, and educators also became part of the scene. The artist Edward Gorey chose Yarmouth for his home, as did astronaut Daniel Burbank. Jazzman Lou Colombo and town administrator Robert Lawton have also made their marks on the community. Yarmouths distinct neighborhoods are a source of pride, and historic preservation is a prime concern to many. The towns annual October gathering is called the Seaside Festival, to let one and all know that the people of Yarmouth are very much aware of their connection to the Atlantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rugged beauty of the Cape's landscape has been captured in writing since the days of Henry David Thoreau. Yet few mention the area's architecture, aside from references to the "Cape Cod houses," the basic cottages that the earliest settlers built. From Provincetown at the northern tip to the village of Woods Hole at the opposite end, the residential architecture of Cape Cod encompasses an extensive range of styles. Scattered among the charming Capes are stately Federals and Greek Revivals built for sea captains, detailed Carpenter Gothic cottages constructed by Methodist camp-goers and sprawling Victorian and Shingle-style summer mansions built during the Gilded Age. Journey with Cape Cod native Jaci Conry as she reveals the architectural influences of different eras on this timeless peninsula.

Great swimming and sunning begins in Kittery, just across the border from New Hampshire, and continues north up the coast through York, Ogunquit, Well, Kennebunk, Biddeford and Old Orchard. But the South Coast is more than just beaches. There are scores of picturesque harbors, quaint shops, cozy inns and bed and breakfasts. Portland, MaineOCOs largest city, reigns over the region. Its famous Old Port section, characterized by gas-lit cobblestone streets, now bustles with trendy shops and charming restaurants and bars. To the northwest is one of MaineOCOs premier freshwater playgrounds, aSebago Lake. The towns that surround it boast long, proud histories predating the Revolutionary War and are themselves the gateway to New HampshireOCOs lofty White Mountains. At the northeastern end of this region liesaFreeport, home to L.L. Beanaand dozens of other outlet and factory stores. Still, the South Coast has plenty to offer those who seek to cast off the cloak of civilization. From nature centers, bird sanctuaries and state parks in Scarborough to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Kennebunk to Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal, escape from the hustle and bustle is only minutes away. Here is the most detailed guide to the region, with color illustrations throughout. Earl Brechlin is a registered Maine Guide and a resident of Bar Harbor."

Book Synopsis Indian New England Before the Mayflower by : Howard S. Russell
Download or read book Indian New England Before the Mayflower written by Howard S. Russell and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In offering here a highly readable yet comprehensive description of New England's Indians as they lived when European settlers first met them, the author provides a well-rounded picture of the natives as neither savages nor heroes, but fellow human beings existing at a particular time and in a particular environment. He dispels once and for all the common notion of native New England as peopled by a handful of savages wandering in a trackless wilderness. In sketching the picture the author has had help from such early explorers as Verrazano, Champlain, John Smith, and a score of literate sailors; Pilgrims and Puritans; settlers, travelers, military men, and missionaries. A surprising number of these took time and trouble to write about the new land and the characteristics and way of life of its native people. A second major background source has been the patient investigations of modern archaeologists and scientists, whose several enthusiastic organizations sponsor physical excavations and publications that continually add to our perception of prehistoric men and women, their habits, and their environment. This account of the earlier New Englanders, of their land and how they lived in it and treated it; their customs, food, life, means of livelihood, and philosophy of life will be of interest to all general audiences concerned with the history of Native Americans and of New England.
