References to previous and subsequent designations are also provided.Structured on historical-geographical principles, the work is divided into two chronological sections: Antiquity and Mediaeval and Modern Times (A.D. 400 to date). An alphabetical index of state names provides an additional point of entry.Offering quick access to basic information about the complex development of universal political geography, the Historical Dictionary of States helps to explain the process of state formation and recalls past political orders and vanished empires.

The editor and the contributors, noted specialists, clarify what lies behind the theories and the widespread use and misuse of geopolitical doctrines. The 219 entries are fairly lengthy essays about the major schools, doctrines, strategies, people, controversies, and policies of geopolitics in the main countries practicing geopolitics. These experts provide a complete picture of how geographic thinking has influenced statecraft and world politics. The entries are cross-referenced and accompanied by over 660 bibliographical citations. Academic and professional geographers and political scientists will find this volume invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of the United States from a late-18th century coalition of rebel British colonies to a 21st century global superpower was shaped by several forces. As the nation expanded its boundaries after the Treaty of Paris confirmed independence from Great Britain in 1783, it acquired a rich variety of resources – coal, fertile soils, forests, iron ore, oil, precious metals, space, and varied climates as well as extensive tracts of territory. Technological innovations, such as the cotton gin and steam power, enabled entrepreneurs to exploit those resources and create wealth. Federal and state legislators provided environments in which the economy could flourish, and military strategists kept the country safe from external attack. Diplomats negotiated commercial agreements with foreign governments and cultivated multinational alliances that strengthened freedoms. Through its focus on the people and places that shaped the country’s economic and political development and its detailed accounts of the processes that enabled the U.S. to expand across the continent Historical Dictionary of the United States contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 400 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the United States.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Geography: Ancient and Modern: Comprising a Succinct Description of All the Countries of the Globe, Their Physical and Political Geography, the Several Races of Their Inhabitants, and Their Ancient as Well as Modern Denominations; Together With a Brief Notice of All When the Author of this Dictionary consented to undertake the task, he frankly confesses that lie had formed no correct estimate of the amount of labour which it would involve. The rapid advances in geographical discovery made during the past few years, have rendered all our popular Gazetteers and Dictionaries embracing geography so extremely defective, that, instead of being able to follow them as authorities, the Author has found himself compelled to have recourse to the toil of original compilation; and he feels it due to the Publishers as well as to himself, to stale, that every article in the present volume has been written expressly for the work. Those only who have been engaged in similar compilations, can appreciate the cost of time and labour which the requisite research has demanded. The plan of the Work is believed to be in some respects original. The Dictionary will be seen to differ from a Gazetteer, both as to what it contains and what it excludes. Combining ancient" with modern geography, and including the names of nations and racesf, as well as geographical terms I, it comprises a large portion of information not to be found in any Gazetteer, and never before brought under alphabetic arrangement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek name Mesopotamia means 'land between the rivers.' The Romans used this term for an area that they controlled only briefly (between 115 and 117 A.D.): the land between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, from the south Anatolian mountains ranges to the Persian Gulf. It comprises the civilizations of Sumer and Akkad (third millennium B.C.) as well as the later Babylonian and Assyrian empires of the second and first millennium. Although the 'history' of Mesopotamia in the strict sense of the term only begins with the inscriptions of Sumerian rulers around the 27th century B.C., the foundations for Mesopotamian civilization, especially the beginnings of irrigation and the emergence of large permanent settlements, were laid much earlier, in the fifth and fourth millennium. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Mesopotamia defines concepts, customs, and notions peculiar to the civilization of ancient Mesopotamia, from adult adoption to ziggurats. This is accomplished through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, appendixes, and hundreds of cross-reference dictionary entries on religion, economy, society, geography, and important kings and rulers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yemen has experienced wrenching changes that have transformed the country in yet unknown ways. The country exploded in a popular revolution against the long-time rule of Ali Abdallah Saleh. While the country appeared to slip toward civil war, Yemeni political elite rallied with international backers to put together a transitional government with a plan to revise the country’s constitution. The transitional government began with a cautious sense of optimism and the prospect of substantial change for the better, but ended in collapse because of a failure to govern. The politics of the street overran an ineffective transitional government that could not address the urgent concerns of Yemeni citizens for security and jobs. Instead, populist leaders exploited people’s dissatisfactions and threw the country into civil war. The Houthi organization covertly allied with its former enemy, Ali Abdallah Saleh, to overthrow the transitional government and declare war on the rest of the country. Saleh seems unable to conceive of life outside of the Presidential Palace and his Houthi allies appear to believe they are destined to rule. Unfortunately, those opposed to Saleh and the Houthi also seem unable to provide effective rule in spite of massive backing from the Gulf States. The incompetence, infighting, and incoherence of the Hadi government bode equally ill for the future of the country. The one hope may be that a new generation of Yemeni leaders emerges to displace the dismal failures of this one. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Yemen contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Yemen.
