Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on the Trees and Shrubs, Vol. 1: Growing Naturally in the Forests of Massachusetts In the progress of the work, I found it necessary to curtail very considerably what I had prepared, especially in regard to the families and genera, as it was evident, if I should go on to describe all the families with the same minuteness of detail even as is given to the pines and oaks, I should write several volumes instead of one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry and Arboriculture in Massachusetts Ladies and Gentlemen, - It has been concisely stated in the report of a forest commission of a neighboring State that a wise economy in the use of the natural resources of a country should recognize the fact that certain regions of the earth's surface are adapted by nature to remain covered with forests, and that any attempt to devote such regions to other purposes can only be followed by failure and disaster. Through the work on the forests of the United States, published in connection with the census of 1880, t it is now possible to form a correct estimate of the immense economic value of our forests. In this volume full accounts are given of the four hundred trees which make up our forest flora, and nearly every one is shown to possess some special value or adaptation to special surroundings. A knowledge, too, of the physical importance of the forests, as shown by a careful study of the effect produced by their removal, both in this country and in Europe, is becoming widely disseminated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Trees: A Popular Account of the Trees in the Streets and Gardens of Salem, and of the Native Trees of Essex County, Massachusetts, With the Location of Trees, and Historical, and Botanical Notes It is tempting to ramble among the old records and traditions, but the subject in hand will not be reached. It is said that Dr. Manasseh Cutler of Hamilton first called attention to the sweet magnolia (magnolia glauca) in Gloucester, near where the present popular summer resort perpetuates the name and fame of the most northerly station of this plant. Its fragrant blossoms attracted him to the spot, and ever since it has been eagerly sought for its flowers and for transplanting into gardens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on the Trees and Shrubs Growing Naturally in the Forests of Massachusetts, 1846 In the Conspectus, or Distribution into Families and Genera, I have attempted to offer a substitute, so far as the plants treat ed of in this Report are concerned, for the arrangement by the artificial system. This attempt I submit with many misgivings. If it shall be considered a failure, it may at least serve to aid others 111 more successfully accomplishing the object. My sketches of the natural families, and, in a considerable degree, of the genera, are necessarily drawn mostly from books; and, as they are taken from the standard works of the science, Endlicher, Lindley, Torrey, and others, are usually given with out particular acknowledgment of the source. Botanists will here, however, find some points touched upon which have not usually received much attention from scientific writers. The descriptions of the species of all the trees, and nearly all the shrubs, are my own, except where I have expressly given credit to others. To collect my materials, I have scoured the forests in almost every part of the State, from the western hills of Berkshire to Martha's Vineyard, and from the banks of the Merrimack to the shores of Buzzard's and Narragansett Bays. The leisure of several summers was first spent in ascertaining what the ligneous plants of Massachusetts are, and how they are distributed. If I have not discovered new species, I have found new localities for several oaks, willows, poplars, pines, and birches, and some others of less importance, and have thus enlarged the Flora of the State. That some species have escaped me is altogether probable, as, even in the summer of 1845, I found the Red Birch growing abundantly on a branch of the Merrimack, some hundreds of miles further north than it had previously been noticed by any botanist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Older Forest Plantations in Massachusetts Seed plots were attempted by some, and others even tried out broadcast sowing. At the end of this period there were in Massachusetts alone forest plantations of white pine to the extent of 10,000 acres. Typical of the forest planters of this time was Mr. Augustus Pratt, a former member of the State Board of Agriculture, who, when nineteen years old, planted pine seed on an old pasture belonging to his father. The wood lot which thus developed has been recently cut, and was between forty and fifty years old. After 1880 interest began to decline, chiefly because of the immense supply of lumber brought from the region of the Great Lakes at a low rate of transportation and the inadequate methods of combating forest fires; these conditions tended to gradually dampen the enthusiasm of the forest planter. Present Need of Reforestation. We are now entering once more upon a campaign for the reclamation of waste land. This is due not alone to the decrease in our supply of lumber, but also to the following facts: - There is a growing sentiment among our people for forests and scenic beauty. There are nearly 1,000,000 acres of waste land in Massachusetts; our hardwood forests are threatened by gypsy, brown-tail and other moth pests, and our beautiful chestnut tracts by the ever-increasing chestnut bark disease. Improved methods of forest-fire fighting and the co-operation of railroads, local fire departments and individuals have made possible the protection of forests, once they have been acquired. Coniferous trees offer the best means of realizing our present needs. They act as the most effective check upon the devastations of the moth, being unedible to the brown-tail, while the gypsy will pass them by if he can find anything else upon which to subsist. Beneath a pine forest there is always a thick bed of needles which keeps the ground moist and free from sprouts and deciduous seedlings. Although one of us is responsible for the text and for the selection of the material photographed and the other for the photographs, we have freely consulted and the bulletin is therefore to be considered a joint publication. The order of arrangement of the Species in the text and the scientific names follow themsage of the seventh edition of Gray's Manual and the latter are in accord with the rules laid down in the Vienna Congress. The figures and descriptions given are of trees for the most part growing wild in New England. A few rarer Species which occur in New England only very locally or in isolated instances have been omitted from illustration. In their places, however, some of the more frequently cultivated trees, have been included because of their value for forestry planting in New England or because of their familiarity in city ornamental plant ings. The varieties of cultivated forms are so numerous that it is obviously possible to take account of only the most common types. Their inclusion, it is believed, will add to the value of the publi cation especially for its use in cities. The keys can be absolutely relied upon only for the Species just mentioned from New England. New England, including as it does the meeting ground between the northern and southern floras, is extremely rich in the species of trees represented. The bulletin, therefore, especially in its descriptive text and illustrations Should prove of service outside of the geographically restricted region described.
