Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Meaning of Prophecy The greater portion of the prophecies by far refer to the coming -day cycle, which is the era that contains the seven trumpets. John is the only prophet who men tions the seven seals and the seven trumpets; but the Old Testament prophets also wrote about those eras that John describes. The seven seals and the seven trumpets extend from the beginning of the Christian era to the beginning of the Millennial era. Prophecy is most profuse upon the sixth seal and sixth trumpet. Some prophets describe the progress of the Church, others describe the progress of Gentile dominion in the powers of the world, and others describe the progress of Antichrist, the minor prophets generally dwelling upon some particular eras. The major prophets describe the Church, the world powers, and the Antichrist by turns. The Bible method has been observed in this work by giving a description of the two spiritual powers in separate chapters. These are the best general suggestions that can be given, except the one most important of all, and that is the aid of the Holy Spirit. The person who reads prophecy as he reads history fails to apprehend it as a revelation from God. But it is even more than that: it is a revela tion of God; for that is the purpose of inspired revelation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets in Their Historical Relations The past few years have seen a revival of interest in the study of the Scriptures. The unique place occupied by the Bible as a means of grace throughout the entire history of the Christian Church has again come to be recognized, and great numbers of old and young have taken up its earnest, devout, and systematic study. This study is by no means confined to the New Testa ment, for Christians are learning more and more that, while they find their loftiest inspiration in the study of the life, the character, and the teaching of the Master and of his disciples, the Old Testament has not been displaced by the New. The early Christians were right in placing the Old Testament by the side of the New, because the former is of inestimable value, and the earnest student soon finds that every part of the book is full of teaching that is of practical value even in the twentieth century A. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophetic Faith In the second part one chapter leads us beyond the figures of the prophets: in the struggle for the revelation we can see traces of the influence of their teaching in its primitive form in the didactic story about the primeval world. And one chapter in the third part too leads us beyond prophecy: this describes how the question, that is the question of the suffering com munity about the meaning of its suffering, absorbs within itself the teaching of the prophets, and how it finds its most personal ex pression in the didactic song and the psalm. With regard to the use of Scriptural passages in the first and the second part we must make certain methodological observa tions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Prophecies of the Apocalypse The author having in the course of a ministry of more than twenty years made prophecy a subject of frequent reading and study, at length found time to write the following discourses. He ventures to present them to the public in the hope that they will be found to throw some additional light on the hidden sense of the apocalypse, and be in some degree instrumental in promoting attention and respect to the teachings and admonitions of that wonderful book. St. John has declared them blessed who read and hear the words of his prophecy and keep the sayings written therein. The author asks of those to whom these pages may come, that they will not prejudge them as fanciful and obscure, but give them a candid investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on the Interpretation of Prophecy No apology is necessary for engaging in the investigation of the subjects, which are briefly treated of in the following sheets. These matters are of deep interest to every inquiring Christian; and the character of the Scriptures, in the view of the world, is in no small degree concerned with them. Unbelievers reproach us with giving credit to a book which is full of enigmas, and allege that every one interprets it according to his own fancy, and so as to support his own particular opinions. Nor is this all. They even charge ambiguity upon the Scriptures themselves; and they are apparently moved to do this, by the ever varying, discrepant, and sometimes even opposite conclusions of expositors. No book, they say, which is plainly and honestly written, could possibly afford room for such diversity of opinion. Particularly have such charges been made against the prophecies. These have been compared to the ambiguous vaticinations of the heathen oracles, and pronounced to be deserving of merely the same credit which is given to them by enlightened minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prophets and Prophecy: A Compilation From Notes of the Lectures Before the Senior Class What is meant by the term "prophet" in the O. T.? True definition: An authoritative and infallible expounder of the will of God. The books of the prophets form an important part of the O. T. writings. This importance is shown in four particulars: 1. In their authority. - They contain a divine revelation of God's will, and dealings with Israel through over four hundred years, which will is still binding, in its essence, on us to-day. 2. In their historical value. - They show to us the religion and theology of the theocracy in its doctrinal aspect, in its most advanced stages. 3. In their Messianic value. - They contain the fullest and clearest disclosures B. C. concerning the coming Redeemer, his work among men, and his ignominious death upon the cross. They give the criteria for his recognition, holding him up before the world as an object of faith and hope. 4. In their apologetic value. - They contain the most astonishing exhibitions of supernatural foresight in numerous predictions, and furnish us with a powerful argument for the truth and divinity of our religion. In these four points the prophecies are most important. For the study and appreciation of the character of the prophets, we must first see what is meant by the term prophet. 1. Deuteronomy 18: 18. 19. The true idea of an O. T. prophet may be learned first and most explicitly from the formal definition given in Deut. 18: 18, 19: "I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him." This passage is applied by Peter in Acts 3: 22, 23, to Christ, and is supposed by some to refer to Christ alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Prophecy of Hosea The author was prevented by several providences from preaching the foregoing sermon for some months to gether, insomuch as himself wondered what purpose God had in it; till at last God visited him by sickness, whereof he fell asleep in the Lord: his disease was thought to be infection, but without any sore, yea, and (as the gentlewoman his wife has related) without any spots or tokens of the plague; there was only a black settling of blood on one side of his back, which she supposed might have arisen from a fall from a horse, which he had met with not long before. This is mentioned by occasion of some contrary reports concerning his death. About the time of his immediate dissolution, he lifted up his eyes, and was heard to Speak these words, I come, I come, I come and so gave up the ghost. It had been much to he wished that the author had been more concise and brief in some amplifications, which, though all exceedingly useful, yet have deprived us of his preaching and completing both the former sermon, and the rest of the prophecy. But God was pleased (for our sin no doubt) to deprive us of that mediator-like instrument between the divided godly parties of this nation, and of the further mind of the Holy Ghost which he had revealed to this his servant, touching the scope and use of this prophecy in these days. God took him away in the strength of his parts and graces, that he might not lose in the reputation of his ministry or piety, as some have before their death. Also, though we cannot affirm, as one of Josiah, that he was taken away lest the evil of the time should have wrought upon his temper; yet we may say, as another doth, he was taken away from the evil to come, Isa. Lvii. 1. Moreover, it is not an unuseful note, that the Preface to the Tigurine Bible hath, whereof the inference is, That whilst in some weighty point we labour for great exactness and preparation, we are either disabled by our diligence, or prevented by our tardiness and delay; whereas moderate preparation seasonably applied might be more useful to the church, than such 'exactnes's so deferred. Which is not spoken to re ect any thing on our reverend author, but to admonish others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology of Prophecy: A Study of the Prophetic Mind, as Manifested By, the Ancient Hebrew Prophets SO far as I know a Psychology of Prophecy has not yet been written. The present attempt at presenting Prophecy from a psychological standpoint can be little more than an outline of how such a study might be pur sued, an analysis only, as it were, of the problem and an indication in what direction the answer may be looked for. Every serious student of Prophecy will accept the fact, I believe, that the Prophets announce the Word of God. The question arises, however: How is this Word of God communicated? In what way does the Prophet become conscious of his Prophecy? Is it primarily an objective or a subjective process? If objective, how does it take place? If subjective, how does the mind proceed?
