Download or read book Rescuing the Planet written by Tony Hiss and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent, resounding call to protect 50 percent of the earth's land by 2050—thereby saving millions of its species—and a candid assessment of the health of our planet and our role in conserving it, from the award-winning author of The Experience of Place and veteran New Yorker staff writer. "An upbeat and engaging account of the remarkable progress being made to preserve vast wild spaces for animals to roam." —The Wall Street Journal Beginning in the vast North American Boreal Forest that stretches through Canada, and roving across the continent, from the Northern Sierra to Alabama's Paint Rock Forest, from the Appalachian Trail to a ranch in Mexico, Tony Hiss sets out on a journey to take stock of the "superorganism" that is the earth: its land, its elements, its plants and animals, its greatest threats--and what we can do to keep it, and ourselves, alive. Hiss not only invites us to understand the scope and gravity of the problems we face, but also makes the case for why protecting half the land is the way to fix those problems. He highlights the important work of the many groups already involved in this fight, such as the Indigenous Leadership Initiative, the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, and the global animal tracking project ICARUS. And he introduces us to the engineers, geologists, biologists, botanists, oceanographers, ecologists, and other "Half Earthers" like Hiss himself who are allied in their dedication to the unifying, essential cause of saving our own planet from ourselves. Tender, impassioned, curious, and above all else inspiring, Rescuing the Planet is a work that promises to make all of us better citizens of the earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinson’s Disease;chronic illness;intimate autonomy;psychology;Jungian psychology From the initial port of a relating pattern with Parkinson’s Disease consisting of the usual fight, flight, freeze or the book’s new ‘fall’ structural methodology, the author takes off on a voyage harboring cryptic intimations about being “with” an illness, about a less ego accentuated interacting. This remarkable transmutation happens gradually. A re-molding takes place during the course of an eight year journey. The nucleus of this book is a descriptive narrative of this journey, of a voyage to the paradoxical space of an intimate autonomy. Even though THE HISS OF HOPE is about living with a chronic disease, the book does not dwell on a life of suffering and desperation, but rather, it also depicts the adventure leading to places, to encounters and to depths of experience that would not have been possible without first having been ambushed by Parkinson’s. Today’s Zeitgeist seems to be pregnant with dark and fearful hints of impending disasters. This book suggests an intimate autonomy as a culturally integrable relating pattern to cope with life in the first half of the 21st century. And with death. With a grateful nod to Parkinson’s Disease and its initial rupture of her life, the author concludes her book with a generous smile. The sparkle of the ‘before’ space links to the calm radiance of the ‘after’. And the sibilant hiss, reveals itself as a dynamic third between hope and no-hope: a concurrent unity of an intimate togetherness and an autonomous separateness. A beginning asserts itself at the end. Parkinson’s reacts with a wise and iconic grin.
Book Synopsis Alger Hiss's Looking-Glass Wars by : G. Edward White
Download or read book Alger Hiss's Looking-Glass Wars written by G. Edward White and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, a great number of Americans saw Alger Hiss as an innocent victim of McCarthyism--a distinguished diplomat railroaded by an ambitious Richard Nixon. And even as the case against Hiss grew over time, his dignified demeanor helped create an aura of innocence that outshone the facts in many minds. Now G. Edward White deftly draws together the countless details of Hiss's life--from his upper middle-class childhood in Baltimore and his brilliant success at Harvard to his later career as a self-made martyr to McCarthyism--to paint a fascinating portrait of a man whose life was devoted to perpetuating a lie. White catalogs the evidence that proved Hiss's guilt, from Whittaker Chambers's famous testimony, to copies of State Department documents typed on Hiss's typewriter, to Allen Weinstein's groundbreaking investigation in the 1970s. The author then explores the central conundrums of Hiss's life: Why did this talented lawyer become a Communist and a Soviet spy? Why did he devote so much of his life to an extensive public campaign to deny his espionage? And how, without producing any new evidence, did he convince many people that he was innocent? White offers a compelling analysis of Hiss's behavior in the face of growing evidence of his guilt, revealing how this behavior fit into an ongoing pattern of denial and duplicity in his life. The story of Alger Hiss is in part a reflection of Cold War America--a time of ideological passions, partisan battles, and secret lives. It is also a story that transcends a particular historical era--a story about individuals who choose to engage in espionage for foreign powers and the secret worlds they choose to conceal. In White's skilled hands, the life of Alger Hiss comes to illuminate both of those themes.

Book Synopsis Alger Hiss, Whittaker Chambers and the Case That Ignited McCarthyism by : Lewis Hartshorn
Download or read book Alger Hiss, Whittaker Chambers and the Case That Ignited McCarthyism written by Lewis Hartshorn and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-07-20 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a consensus-challenging history of the Alger Hiss-Whittaker Chambers controversy of 1948 to 1950, a criminal case in which Hiss was convicted of perjury after two long trials. Chambers claimed that Hiss had passed classified State Department documents to him in 1937 and 1938 for transmittal to the Soviet Union. Hiss denied the charges but was found guilty at his second trial (the jury could not reach a decision in the first). Hiss was not charged with espionage because of the statute of limitations. The main focus of this narrative concentrates on the early months of the affair, from August 1948 when Chambers appeared before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and denounced Hiss and several others as underground Communists, to the following December when Hiss was indicted for perjury. The truth emerges as the story unfolds, based in part on grand jury records unsealed by court order in 1999, leading to the conclusion that the stories Whittaker Chambers told the authorities and later published about himself and Alger Hiss in the Communist underground are completely fraudulent.
