Download or read book The New Despotism written by Bülent Diken and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ours is a post-political society that cannot imagine radical change; a ‘one dimensional’ society in which politics is reduced to economic concerns. Paradoxically, however, everybody today is subjected to the imperative of regular radical change. Populations have grown accustomed to the idea that one constantly needs to adapt to radical transformations, modify one’s life strategy in tune with the demands of the market on the one hand and the politics of security on the other. Indeed, the idea that there are unquestionable authorities, the idea of ‘despotism’, no longer refers to exceptional circumstances in which politics is suspended but rather seems to have become normalized as part of daily life. This book aims to articulate the genealogy of the despotism-economy-voluntary servitude nexus focusing on their different constellations in the prism of social theory and political philosophy. As it traces the genealogy of this nexus its concern is the field of formation, intervention and intelligibility that arises when and as the three concepts encounter one another.
Book Synopsis From the "terror of the World" to the "sick Man of Europe" by : Aslı Çırakman
Download or read book From the "terror of the World" to the "sick Man of Europe" written by Aslı Çırakman and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2002 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the «Terror of the World» to the «Sick Man of Europe» sheds new light on the hotly debated issue of Orientalism by looking at the European images of the Ottoman Empire and society over three centuries. Through a careful examination of the European intellectual discourse, this book claims that there was no coherent and constant Europewide vision of the Turks until the eighteenth century and clearly demonstrates that the Age of Reason has not rendered reasonable images of the Turks. Indeed, once inspiring awe, the European opinion of Ottomans was held in contempt during this period.
Book Synopsis Pluralist Democracy in International Relations by : Leonie Holthaus
Download or read book Pluralist Democracy in International Relations written by Leonie Holthaus and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the importance of democracy for understanding modern international relations and recovers the pluralist tradition of L.T. Hobhouse, G.D.H. Cole, and David Mitrany. It shows that pluralism’s typical interest in civil society, trade unionism, and transnationalism evolved as part of a wide-ranging democratic critique that representative democracies are hardly self-sustaining and are ill-equipped to represent all entitled social and political interests in international relations. Pluralist democratic peace theory advocates transnational loyalties to check nationalist sentiments and demands the functional representation of social and economic interests in international organizations. On the basis of the pluralist tradition, the book shows that theories about domestic democracy and international organizations co-evolved before scientific liberal democratic peace theory introduced new inside/outside distinctions.
Book Synopsis The Domestic Sources of International Institutions by : Kendall Stiles
Download or read book The Domestic Sources of International Institutions written by Kendall Stiles and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a new way of thinking about diplomacy, warfare, trade, and collective goods that begins with the notion that key international actors project their domestic institutions onto the regional or global arena. Exploring the emergence, consolidation, and decay of international norms, the author puts forward a general argument designed to identify patterns across time and space, combining key insights from constructivist, liberal, classical realist, English School, and feminist thinking. By moving from institution to institution, each chapter presents a coherent story ranging from antiquity to the contemporary world allowing us to see not only the patterns, but also to begin to develop conjectures about other causal stories implicit in the narrative. The book will be used by scholars and students of international relations, international organization and law, security studies, political economy, historical sociology, regionalism, and a wide range of specific topics such as arms control, trade, migration, identity, and collective goods.

Book Synopsis Classes, Power and Conflict by : Anthony Giddens
Download or read book Classes, Power and Conflict written by Anthony Giddens and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1982-05-13 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years a remarkable range of new work has been produced dealing with class inequalities, the division of labor, and the state. In these writings scholars previously working in isolation from one another in sociology, economics, political science, and history have found common ground. Much of this work has been influenced by Marxist theory, but at the same time it has involved critiques of established Marxist views, and incorporated ideas drawn from other sources. These developments have until now not been reflected in existing course texts which are often diffusely concerned with “social stratification” and lack reference to contemporary theory. Classes, Power, and Conflict breaks new ground in providing a comprehensive introduction to current debates and contemporary research. In also connects these to the classical sources, concentrating particularly on Marx, Lenin and Weber. The book therefore offers a comprehensive coverage of materials for students who have little or no prior acquaintance with the field. Each section of the book contains a substantial introduction, explaining and expanding on the themes of the selections contained within that section. Classes, Power, and Conflict can be expected to become the standard text for courses in sociology and political science.

Book Synopsis Despotism in Iran by : Hassan Ghazi Moradi
Download or read book Despotism in Iran written by Hassan Ghazi Moradi and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despotism in Iran Translated by M. Reza Abrishamchian Written by Hassan Ghazi To realize just why it is necessary to understand despotism in Iran you only have to remember that despotism has a 2500 year history. To believe that it can be quickly abolished is nothing but a naïve dream. In Despotism in Iran the “how” of despotic rule is dissected, rather than the “why.” The “why” is related to the history of Iran and is not a concern in our time. In modern times there is no historical necessity for this type of government to rely on. Many of the assertions in Despotism in Iran apply to other nations and countries with similar backgrounds who have suffered or currently suffer under despotic regimes.
