Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heidelberg Catechism, in German, Latin and English: With an Historical Introduction This volume has been prepared by a Committee of the Synod of the German Reformed Church in the United States, appointed at the annual meeting held at Harrisburg, Pa., in 1859; and is designed to commemorate the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the formation and adoption of the Heidelberg Catechism. The resolution under which the Committee was appointed, orders the prepara tion of a critical standard edition of the Heidelberg Catechism in the original Ger man, and Latin, together with a revised English translation, and an historical intro duction, to be published in superior style as a centennial edition, in Agree ably to these instructions, we publish a comprehensive historical and theological Introduction, and a critical edition of the Catechism in four texts: Old German, Latin, Modern German, and English, printed in parallel columns. The Introduction furnishes a succinct but full account of the origin and forma tion of the Catechism, its reception in the different branches of the Protestant Church, and its fortunes in Europe and America; and compares its genius and the ology with that of other Reformed and Lutheran confessions, both of earlier and later date. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays on the Heidelberg Catechism by John Nevin, a principal representative of the Mercersburg Theology that was birthed in nineteenth-century Pennsylvania. It also contains a critical response by John Proudfit, a more traditionally scholastic Calvinist. In these essays Nevin argued that the Heidelberg Catechism is an essential irenic confessional document that encapsulates the Reformed tradition and also builds bridges to Lutheranism and Roman Catholicism. According to Nevin the use of the Catechism is vital for shaping the identity of Christians and overcoming the dangers of individualism and subjectivism. Nevin’s enthusiasm for the Catechism was a function of his understanding of the Christian life as progressive growth in Christlikeness, the church as the nurturing body of Christ, and the sacraments as conduits of Christ’s vivifying personhood. These convictions stood in sharp contrast to the non-catechetical sensibilities of most nineteenth-century American Protestants who emphasized the sufficiency of Scripture alone, the church as a gathered community of like-minded individuals, dramatic conversion experiences, and the direct presence of Christ to the individual soul.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Literature of the Heidelberg Catechism, and of Its Introduction Into the Netherlands: Translated From the German Here we become acquainted with the springs, the power, and the effects of truth and error, of wisdom and folly, of virtue and vice, of customs, prejudices, and passions. Here we gather the clearest ideas upon religious and civil government, ideas which are so important to our inward and outward peace, and which, through recent occurrences, and occasional shallow and imprudent administration, to which they have given rise, have obtained such a degree of vagueness, confusion, and absurdity, that there is danger of their becoming very unsafe guides of conduct for some time to come.
