The heat of formation vs composition curve shows a maximum exothermic value between 40 and 45 at-% Pd, resembling the curve previously obtained for the Ag-Pd system and tending to verify Pauling's theory on the nature of atomic bonding. The data were combined with available free energy data to determine entropies of formation. The heats of solution obtained for Cu and Pd in dilute solution in liquid Sn at 775 K were + 2900 and - 25240 cal/g-atom, respectively. The alloys were analyzed chemically and lattice constants were determined from x-ray diffraction data. (Author).

Book excerpt: Tin solution calorimetry has been used to measure the heats of formation of selected face-centered cubic palladium-rich solid solutions of the palladium-silver-tin system. The results show that alloys of constant electron concentration are characterised by heats of formation which vary almost exactly linearly between the values for the terminal binary alloys. The results are discussed in relation to the possible contributions associated with electronic energy and ion-ion interaction effects. Lattice parameters of the alloys have been measured and a linear variation of these is also observed. The technique based on the precipitation of an alloy phase from liquid tin has been used for the study of the aluminides Pt2Al3(Ni2Al3-type), RhAl (CsCl-type) and NiAl (CsCl-type), while normal solution calorimetry has been used to investigate the compound PdGa (FeSi-type). Values obtained for the heats of formation were found. These and previously determined heats of formation of related compounds are compared and trends and influences in the heats of formation of transition metal aluminides and palladium - Group IIIB compounds are discussed.

Book excerpt: Springer Handbook of Condensed Matter and Materials Data provides a concise compilation of data and functional relationships from the fields of solid-state physics and materials in this 1200 page volume. The data, encapsulated in 914 tables and 1025 illustrations, have been selected and extracted primarily from the extensive high-quality data collection Landolt-Börnstein and also from other systematic data sources and recent publications of physical and technical property data. Many chapters are authored by Landolt-Börnstein editors, including the prominent Springer Handbook editors, W. Martienssen and H. Warlimont themselves. The Handbook is designed to be useful as a desktop reference for fast and easy retrieval of essential and reliable data in the lab or office. References to more extensive data sources are also provided in the book and by interlinking to the relevant sources on the enclosed CD-ROM. Physicists, chemists and engineers engaged in fields of solid-state sciences and materials technologies in research, development and application will appreciate the ready access to the key information coherently organized within this wide-ranging Handbook. From the reviews: "...this is the most complete compilation I have ever seen... When I received the book, I immediately searched for data I never found elsewhere..., and I found them rapidly... No doubt that this book will soon be in every library and on the desk of most solid state scientists and engineers. It will never be at rest." -Physicalia Magazine

Book excerpt: Reversible galvanic cells employing zirconia-calcia solid electrolytes were used to investigate the thermodynamic properties of the face-centered cubic solid solutions of the ternary system palladium-copper-silver. Measurements were made between 870 and 1250 K over a wide range of compositions and the data used to calculate activities of copper and integral free energies of formation of the entire range of ternary alloys at 1000K. Tin solution calorimetry was used to measure the heats of formation of solid palladium-indium alloys. Values for the palladium-rich f.c.c. solid solution and for the intermediate phases Pd3In, Pd2In, Pd5In3, PdIn, Pd2In3 and PdIn3 were obtained. The system is extremely exothermic in character. This is considered to be due to electron transfer to the subvalency transition metal electron levels which contributes a large heteropolar component to the bonding in the intermediate phases. The phase PdIn has been investigated in detail; the occurrence of defect structures is indicated. New measurements of the heats of solution of palladium and indium in liquid tin were obtained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finish Manufacturing Processes are those final stage processing techniques which are deployed to bring a product to readiness for marketing and putting in service. Over recent decades a number of finish manufacturing processes have been newly developed by researchers and technologists. Many of these developments have been reported and illustrated in existing literature in a piecemeal manner or in relation only to specific applications. For the first time, Comprehensive Materials Finishing, Three Volume Set integrates a wide body of this knowledge and understanding into a single, comprehensive work. Containing a mixture of review articles, case studies and research findings resulting from R & D activities in industrial and academic domains, this reference work focuses on how some finish manufacturing processes are advantageous for a broad range of technologies. These include applicability, energy and technological costs as well as practicability of implementation. The work covers a wide range of materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric materials. There are three main distinct types of finishing processes: Surface Treatment by which the properties of the material are modified without generally changing the physical dimensions of the surface; Finish Machining Processes by which a small layer of material is removed from the surface by various machining processes to render improved surface characteristics; and Surface Coating Processes by which the surface properties are improved by adding fine layer(s) of materials with superior surface characteristics. Each of these primary finishing processes is presented in its own volume for ease of use, making Comprehensive Materials Finishing an essential reference source for researchers and professionals at all career stages in academia and industry. Provides an interdisciplinary focus, allowing readers to become familiar with the broad range of uses for materials finishing Brings together all known research in materials finishing in a single reference for the first time Includes case studies that illustrate theory and show how it is applied in practice
