Book excerpt: "In her debut story collection, Heartbreaker, Maryse Meijer, flashlight in hand, goes deep into the darkest rooms of the psyche. With gorgeously restrained and exacting prose that packs a cumulatively devastating punch, she unapologetically unmasks the violence we are willing to perform upon one another in the name of love and loneliness and the unremitting desire to survive. In doing so, she lights societal convention and reader expectation on fire, exploring the darker emotional truths surrounding love and sex, femininity and masculinity, family and girlhood"--

Book Synopsis The World is a Heartbreaker by : Sherwin Tjia
Download or read book The World is a Heartbreaker written by Sherwin Tjia and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Is a Heartbreaker inaugurates a new subgenre: imposter poetry. This collection is a set of 1600 pseudohaikus, bite-sized chunks of poetic goodness shotgunned at the distracted masses. What's a pseudohaiku? It's the poetry of pure indulgence, a three-liner without the constraint, the pretension or the 5-7-5 syllable form. The subject matter? Relationships, cats, insecurities - themes recur and build into a kind of non-linear narrative. These micropoems are easily digestible yet remarkably acute, a catalogue of scattered thoughts and pointed observations that go down like potato chips - betcha can't read just one. Sometimes sexy, sometimes scandalous, sometimes sentimental, but always three lines long, these pseudohaikus are the future of poetry in a world awash with sound bites, news clips, catchphrases. There are no pleasures like the guilty ones. About Tjia's earlier books: 'Gentle Fictions is a tender, playful and inspiring poetry collection ... Tjia's poems are often silly, cute and irreverent, but artfully so.' - Matrix '[Pedigree Girls] is hilarious. It's also filled with raw, biting social criticism. [It's] the weirdest comix you'll read all year ... discover the seductiveness of nihilism by way of an author with a sharp sense of humour.' - NOW

Praise for Knight’s Edge Collection 5* - This is a terrific set of rock romances! - Viper Spaulding, Reviewer. These standalone romances pack a huge emotional punch and tell the story of the formation of the Knight’s Edge rock band. The author brilliantly overlaps the timelines a bit on the books, so some of the scenes are in more than one book, giving us the same events from more than one viewpoint. Each of the band members has a completely different background, bringing their unique talents to the band and making each romance a separate yet tightly connected adventure. 5* - You don’t want to miss this! – Rhonda Hicks, Vine Voice Reviewer. You don’t want to miss this!! Let Liz Gavin introduce you to Tristan, Noah, Aidan, and Duke. Four men coming from seemingly different worlds and circumstances and finding their way into one another’s lives and forming the band "Knight’s Edge". Each story is a heartfelt, panty-melting experience that will entertain and keep you in suspense from beginning to end. 5* - Such a great collection – Kindle Customer Review These stories focused more on the band mates rather than the typical rockstar party house style. (…) The women were strong, independent, willing to give love despite all the hardships they faced. The men were faithful, loving and willing to put the work into getting their woman or getting them back. All around great stories! 5* - An absolutely amazing, must-read collection – Karen Galloway, Reviewer. Each book has a great, entertaining, well-written storyline with engaging characters that pulled me into their stories. I loved all the guys in Knight’s Edge and I couldn’t put this set down. I was hooked from the very first chapter. This a really enjoyable, sizzling, romantic, must-read box set.
Download or read book The Heartbreaker written by Susan Howatch and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deftly combining the sacred and the profane—the unmistakable hallmark of her fiction over the past decade—Susan Howatch gives us a spellbinding, suspenseful and psychologically intense new novel. The financial heart of London—the City—is an adrenaline-charged square mile deep in recession in the 1990s, a place where sex is just another commodity to be bought and sold in the marketplace. And the City is where the life of Gavin Blake, who sells sex to high flyers, is finally about to unravel. In the center of the City is St. Benet’s, a church that ministers to the casualties of this affluent but amoral society. Carta Graham, the St. Benet’s fundraiser, is at once attracted to Gavin when they meet through a mutual friend, but slowly she realizes that she has entered a relationship far more complex than she could ever have imagined. Gavin is desperate to escape from his world of prostitution, pornography and violence, but as his involvement with Carta and St. Benet’s deepens, the dangers that encircle him escalate until his life itself is on the line. Carta is determined to help him—but will their mysterious journey together be lifesaving or soul-destroying? All she can do is fight her hardest to help Gavin survive. Consistently surprising and powerfully moving, The Heartbreaker is Susan Howatch’s most gripping novel yet.

This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 7700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Excellent Collection brings together Mark Twain's longer, major books and a fine selection of shorter pieces and Science-Fiction Books. This Books created and collected in Mark Twain's Most important Works illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of the XX century - a man who elevated political writing to an art. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name "Mark Twain", was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise.[5] His humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into French.[6] His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—such as the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but in time overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He eventually paid all his creditors in full, even though his bankruptcy relieved him of having to do so. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet made its closest approach to the Earth.
