Book excerpt: With the technology of the Hurricane being at the end of the biplane combat aircraft era, there was an urgent requirement for a modern fighter with a capability ahead of the anticipated German fighter development for the Luftwaffe. The Hawker design team lead by Sydney Camm created the all-metal stressed skin structure Typhoon powered by the revolutionary Napier Sabre engine. Whereas the Hurricane had been developed in peacetime, the Typhoon was designed in wartime, when the urgency of the programme caused the development of both the airframe and engine to be accelerated, resulting in teething troubles not being fully solved when the aircraft entered service with the RAF. The much improved Tempest used the same engine and basic fuselage with thinner lamina flow wings, giving improved performance at altitude, and allowing the destruction of the V1s at low altitude. Both aircraft made a significant impact on the victory by the Allies in WW2, although their low level ground attack missions were extremely hazardous, and resulted in high pilot losses.

Created by Sidney Camm of HG Hawker Engineering Company, created in 1933 around the new engine RR PV 12 and responsive to the specific F.5/34, which called for a hunt with 8 light machine guns, really an impressive increase compared to the two normally course at the time. Consider that the first specification for an Italian fighter monoplane spoke of a plane armed with a single machine gun (but 12.7), increased to two only later. After this specification were issued the F.36/34 and the new Hurricane flew November 6, 1935, soon surpassing the 483 km/h (300 mph), with the PV 12 that according to the latest specification was to get to 1,025 hp to 4,500 m, a far cry from the Kestrel that potentiate, for example, the first Bf-109. The Hurricane monoplane, in a shiny metallic gray livery, was actually a mixture of new technologies - in aerodynamic terms - like the wing monoplane, retractable by the providential wide track, closed cockpit, radio, but the reality behind the fuselage 'cockpit was in welded steel tubes covered with wooden structures which were given the painted canvas, remained so in the future. The Hurricane was a formidable fighter for 1937, when he entered the service had no equal in the world. But you could not ignore that its structure only partially metallic, and its thick wing were not entirely acceptable for the evolution necessary for the following years: even with upgraded engines, it would not be possible to significantly exceed the speed Hurricane base.

The new aircraft encountered teething problems and was also delayed by production priorities for other Hawker types during the Battle of Britain. During its early operational life the Typhoon had to overcome problems that threatened to end its service, but these were eventually remedied so that, by the last quarter of 1943, the Typhoon had become a reliable aircraft. Improvements included the introduction of the new single piece 'blown' hood, a four-bladed propeller and an enlarged tailplane, but there was no change in designation. When production ceased in November 1945, 3317 Typhoons had been built.At first pure fighters were produced, but, by the spring of 1943, only the fighter-bomber version was coming off the production line and by the end of the year all the Typhoon squadrons were undertaking some form of ground attack role. On the eve of D-Day the Typhoon had become the backbone of the 2TAF fighter-bomber force with no less than eighteen squadrons active. This book narrates the operational usage of three squadrons, Nos. 137, 193 and 263 which were connected with the Fellowship of the Bellow. Book excerpt: This book examines the RAF's ground attack capabilities, the threats it faced, and the weapons, technologies and aircraft developed to counter those threats from the end of World War II to the present day, moving from the era of the Hawker Typhoon to that of the Eurofighter Typhoon. Throughout the Cold War a major RAF role was to conduct low-level attacks in support of NATO ground forces. Weapons and aircraft developed to carry out this task included the Hawker Typhoon and Hunter. Harriers and Phantoms were later used. With the increase in Warsaw Pact armored forces and their air defense capability, new weapons and aircraft were required resulting in two roles becoming RAF specialities: counter-air and anti-armor operations. The former saw Buccaneers and Jaguars armed with nuclear weapons and Tornadoes with JP.233 to be used against airfields while the latter saw Harriers, Jaguars and Phantoms with BL.755 cluster bombs and latterly Typhoons with Brimstone, against armor. Another role assigned to the RAF in support of its own, and the Army's, operations was tactical reconnaissance. This equipment evolved from the wet-film cameras of the 1940s and the IR linescan systems of the 1970s to the real-time battle management systems on the Sentinel R.1 in the new century. Thankfully the RAF never went to war in Europe but saw plenty of action around the world, where the aircraft and weapons developed to counter the Soviets were used against enemies old and new.

Nato come Fury Monoplane, si proponeva di continuare in versione monoplana il progetto del Fury, uno dei migliori e più raffinati tra i caccia della vecchia generazione. Creato da Sidney Camm della HG Hawker Engineering Company, ideato fin dal 1933 attorno al nuovo motore RR PV 12 e rispondente alla specifica F.5/34, che chiamava per un caccia dotato di 8 mitragliatrici leggere, davvero un aumento impressionante rispetto alle due normalmente portate all'epoca. Si pensi che la prima specifica per un caccia italiano monoplano parlava di un aereo armato di un'unica mitragliatrice (ma da 12,7), aumentata a due solo in seguito. Dopo di questa specifica vennero emesse la F.36/34 e il nuovo Hurricane volò il 6 novembre 1935, superando presto i 483 km/h (300 miglia orarie), con il PV 12 che secondo l'ultima specifica doveva arrivare a 1.025 hp a 4.500 m, una bella differenza rispetto al Kestrel che potenziava, per esempio, il primo Bf-109. L'Hurricane monoplano, in un fiammante livrea grigio metallica, era in realtà un misto di tecnologie nuove - in termini aerodinamici - come l'ala monoplana, carrello retrattile dalla provvidenziale carreggiata larga, abitacolo chiuso, radio, ma la fusoliera in realtà dietro l'abitacolo era in tubi d'acciaio saldati ricoperti di strutture di legno a cui si accordava la tela verniciata, rimasta tale anche in futuro. L'Hurricane era un formidabile caccia per il 1937, quando entrò in servizio non aveva pari al mondo. Ma non si poteva ignorare che la sua struttura solo parzialmente metallica, e la sua spessa ala non fossero del tutto accettabili per l'evoluzione necessaria per gli anni successivi: anche con motori potenziati, non sarebbe stato possibile superare di molto la velocità dell'Hurricane base.
