Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Medical School, Vol. 1: A History, Narrative and Documentary Our author has had untrammelled access to authorities and documents, and he tells in elaborate detail the history of the Harvard School. After giving us an account of the medical conditions in New England during colonial times, he recounts what service Harvard men furnished to the medical depart ment of the Revolutionary Army, and then plunges into the story of the School's founding and feeble growth through the latter part of the 18th century, when the teaching was in Cambridge and hospitals did not exist. Numerous biograph ical sketches of ancient Harvard Medical worthies follow, and the period ends with the year 1810. Then the School was transferred to Boston and waxed strong. Hospitals were built, teachers multiplied, new learn ing was imported, famous names appeared on our rolls, and. Just as an educational expansion was becoming imminent, the era ended in the crash of the great Civil War. So much is told in Volume II. With Volume III we learn of a revolution in medical edu cation. President Eliot takes the reins. The old order changes. The old School had been a truly private enterprise under the shelter of the University. The new school becomes an integral part of the University. We read the inspiring story of the new learning and of University development throughout the land, - a story which must appeal to every thoughtful man. So we follow the history of the Harvard School down to the present, and learn of the great new founds tion which tomorrow we shall enjoy. The history of a professional school cannot furnish many dramatic incidents. It flows on gently from year to year, punctuated here and there with names, discoveries, upbuild ings; with struggles, vicissitudes, contests. To be complete, a history of this kind must be largely statistical and docu mentary; such are the volumes before us; but through them. There runs a stream of narrative which Harvard men will fol low with interest and satisfaction. Especially valuable are the sketches of Eminent Alumni. When you read the stories of Nathan Smith, Howe, the War rens, Dalton, Flint, the Bigelows, Holmes, Parker and many others, you appreciate the wide influence of the Harvard School; and if you are blessed with imagination you thrill with pride. Book excerpt: "The Hippocratic Collection (Corpus Hippocraticum) consists of between sixty and seventy medical writings in the Ionic Greek dialect dating for the most part from a hundred year period around 400 BC. The works included in volume 1 are Ancient Medicine, Airs Waters Places, Epidemics I, Epidemics III, Oath, Precepts, and Nutriment. These works greatly in their form and content. Ancient Medicine and Airs Waters Places are essays formulated in elegant expository prose, in which their authors treat central questions of medical method. Epidemics I and III are primary witnesses to Hippocratic observation and experience. The Hippocratic Oath is, or pretends to be, a historical document, although its lack of historical context often leaves its interpreter at a loss. Unquestionably, however, its identification of many of the perennial ethical problems attached to medical practice, and its high moral ideal justify the reverence it has received for two millennia. Precepts is interesting for its author's thoughts on medical ethics, etiquette, and professionalism, in spite of the fact that the text often lacks logical coherence, and its language on several occasions defies comprehension. Nutriment, which is also often difficult to understand-although in this case the mystery may be partly the result of an intentional imitation of the language of the early Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus-contains many speculative explanations how the three basic forms of nutriment (food, drink, and breath) interact with the body"--

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... THE MEDICAL SCHOOL, BOSTON. GENERAL STATEMENT. Three professorships of Medicine were established at the University in the years 1782 and 1783. The first degrees in medicine were conferred in 1788. Before 1811 the degree conferred upon graduates of the School was that of Bachelor of Medicine; beginning with 1811 the degree has been Doctor of Medicine. In 1810 the lectures given in medicine were transferred from Cambridge to Boston, where the first medical college was built in 1815. The course of study required in this School for the degree of M.D. is of four years' duration. This requirement was established at the beginning of the year 1892-93. The academic year begins on the Thursday following the last Wednesday in September, and ends on the last Wednesday in June. In order that the time of study shall count as a full year, students of all classes must present themselves on the first day of the School year and register their names with the secretary. There is a Christmas recess from December twenty-third to January second inclusive, and a recess of one week's duration in April. Beginning with the year 1890-1900 a new arrangement of the subjects taught in the first two years was adopted. During the first half of the first year the students devote their time solely to anatomy and histology, and during the second half of the first year to physiology and biological chemistry. They devote the first half of the second year to pathology and bacteriology, and the remainder of the second year to a variety of subjects which more particularly prepare the student for the clinical work of the third and fourth years. Experience has shown that this logical arrangement of the subjects of the first two years enables a student to concentrate his energies...
